  1. I was thinking about this today -- that the movie's best virtues were more subtle in nature. Wonder Woman and Black Panther had more oomph, but they also had Themiscyra and Wakanda. Vers was stuck in the world we inhabit, dealing with the constant, mundane, annoying expectations and entitlements we encounter all the time. It will be interesting to see how it holds up on rewatch.
  2. I believe she mentioned that Democrats will need well over 50% of the vote to capture at least 50% of the House. So since your vote doesn't count as much, it's actually more important for you to vote.
  3. Reading the articles about Crazy Rich Asians, the whole "Asians are unattractive" thing caught me by surprise. Sure, everyone's got their own eye, but you've never seen a handsome Asian man? 'Cause I sure have.
  4. Watching Avengers: Infinity War, during the scene between Thor and Rocket, the thought crossed my mind that Chris Hemsworth would make an interesting James Bond.
  5. I can see a difference between firing someone over something gross they said yesterday and firing someone over something gross they said 10 years ago. Is Gunn a better person now than he was then? I don't know. He's a better-behaved person, at least.
  6. I see what you did there... (Michael Douglas once co-starred in The Streets of San Francisco.)
  7. This article has some good context: https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2018/7/19/17590302/trevor-noah-france-french-ambassador-araud-world-cup
  8. So, any chance we'll see Ewoks again in the next movie?
  9. I managed to see this a while back, and my impression was that Judy and Peter did remember the game. They certainly seemed more interested in Alan and Sarah than kids meeting their father's boss would be.
  10. You got the receipts for that claim?

  12. Because they provided the technology that Scott used during CA:CW. Aiding people who violate the Sokovia Accords is a violation of the Sokovia Accords. There's a chance they could have prevailed in court (Scott stole the suit) but as mentioned above, they didn't trust the system. And Scott didn't act like he was dragged to Germany against his will; I don't know why "dragooned" is the default setting over "volunteered." I'm in the camp of liking the smaller scale movies just fine; not everyone has to save the world. And it helps with Marvel's long-running third act issue. Most of the time, the third act is a big action spectacle, but the action doesn't have much suspense. Will the Avengers defeat the alien invasion? Of course they will. I think CA:TWS had a third act that finally had real suspense. Not whether Team Cap would save humanity from Project Insight (of course they will) but whether Cap would have to kill his newly-rediscovered best friend to do it. Here, the third act had more options than just victory or (unthinkable) failure. Granted, I was pretty sure that Janet would make it back and she'd be able to fix Ava, but that was a conclusion I came to during the third act, not right before it started. The other thing about scaling down the villain threat is that they're already dealing with something big and scary: the Quantum Realm. They could have made that the villain, and I would have been just fine with it. I had a good time, and I look forward to seeing it again.
  13. After watching CA:CW on TNT, I'm reminded that Ross is in the line of succession for the presidency. I would really rather not see that come into play.
  14. I believe the Italian and her people were protecting him while he took care of Moreau.
  15. Perhaps being too poor to buy farm hands is not all that poor. It didn't look like they were wondering where their next meal was coming from. (And Luke whined. It's not about whether he had "real" problems, it's about how he dealt with them.)
  16. This was a really interesting analysis of the use of Wonder Woman's signature costume throughout the film: https://tomandlorenzo.com/2018/07/wonder-woman-movie-reviews-costumes-analysis/

  18. I can understand the appeal of "Space Force!" It reminds them of the time when Americans were walking on the moon, that magical past when everything was simple and we were the bestest country in the whole wide world -- at least for people like them, mostly, sort of.
  19. So I'm old, but watching Asia, I kept thinking, "As God is my witness, I thought turkeys could fly."
  20. Yes, those are the only two possible options: emotionless calculation or murderous rage. Of course not. There's also pain, disbelief, anger, loss, longing -- the point is, these are all strong emotions. Most people are not very analytical while in the grip of strong emotions. I'm guessing you've never lost anyone you loved, since you seem to need this explained.
  21. Six original Avengers, six Infinity Stones. Coincidence?
  22. Sounds like MTV's version of People's Most Beautiful/Handsome. As I recall, their first Lifetime Achievement Award went to Jackie Chan, who, it turned out, was just starting the Hollywood stage of his career.
  23. Because when I've just learned that my beloved has been killed, I am going to assess the tactical situation.
