  1. I'm not sure if it's her 'first day of school outfit', but it's perhaps very telling that Maeve in her first official day enrolled back at school wears the exact jacket, t-shirt, necklaces (though they are usually the same), maybe skirt (cannot really tell given the coloring), and boots (though they are her normal boots) combo that she was wearing when Otis bumped into her in S01E01 and was later 'checking her out' in class. It could simply be a coincidence, but it's possible-to-likely that Maeve remembers what she was wearing when Otis and she first meet. And it tracks with hers seemingly otherwise bizarrely 'taking the fall' for Otis's running into her in the hallway. And with her in S01E01 somehow not sitting next to Aimee. And really the rest of the series. While it's possible both Otis and Maeve weren't interested in each other at all before S01E01, it's probably more likely that each were at least somewhat interested in the other before S01E01.
  2. Sex Education: S01E01 bullet points and analysis Note: I’m generally going to put all the Maeve/Jackson stuff in the Otis/Maeve section. * Otis Milburn doesn’t have a lock on his bedroom door, and it seems his bedroom is regularly mistaken for the location of the bathroom. This probably contributes to his sexual ‘disfunction’. * It’s odd the Milburn house seems to have only one bathroom. * Not including Remi Milburn (Otis’s father), Otis is upper middle class. Including Remi, Otis is at least lower upper class. Both Otis’s parents are renowned sex therapists and best-selling authors on sex. Either Otis was taught a lot of his sex therapy knowledge and/or it simply ‘rubbed off’ on Otis. While seemingly not as intelligent as Maeve Wiley, Otis has a high IQ. * Otis is the clear alpha in the Otis-Eric Effoing friendship. * Otis and Eric are relatively very open (for men) about talking about their ‘sex lives’ to each other. * It’s implied Otis could be popular if he wanted to be, but he’s relatively very reserved and doesn’t seem interested in popularity if he has to ‘work at it’. * It seems the entire school knows of Maeve Wiley. * It’s possible Maeve Wiley and Aimee Gibbs’s friendship is still a secret or somewhat secret at this point. * What is the minimum wage in the area in the series? Can Maeve write papers quicker and make more money from doing that than if she got a part-time job somewhere? * Maeve clearly would prefer to have a ‘normal’ family. * Maeve is possibly going to sit next to Aimee at lunch. Has Maeve ever done that before? Did the Untouchables before S01E01 know that Aimee and she are friends? * Otis can hear his mother having sex. That probably contributes to his sexual dysfunction. OTIS/MAEVE: * Otis knows his mother (Jean Milburn) has casual sex with relatively random partners. Otis doesn’t consider casual sex a ‘big deal’. Otis doesn’t seem to get significantly jealous of Maeve/Jackson until Maeve/Jackson are boyfriend/girlfriend and Maeve doesn’t ‘hang out’ with Otis as much. * Otis’s sexual ‘dysfunction’ is probably the primary reason Otis doesn’t ‘make a move’ on Maeve and seems relatively considerably not jealous of Maeve/Jackson. * Does Eric before S01E01 know or consider or think Otis is physically attracted to Maeve Wiley? * Maeve seems the ONLY girl Otis is actually considerably physically attracted to. He doesn’t seem to think much of any of the Untouchables in terms of looks. He later because of ‘why not’ and ? Otis’s initial attraction to Maeve is likely entirely based on her looks. He doesn’t know until later that she sells essays and such to people. He doesn’t seem to know she’s possibly smart until their interactions in S01E02. * It’s possible Otis and Maeve had never had a class together before S01E01. It’s clear that they haven’t interacted before S01E01. SCHOOL HALLWAY SCENE: * Did Otis ‘run into’ Maeve on purpose? It seems she was going straight—not rounding a corner--; so, it seems he would likely know she’s walking straight toward him. He looks down at his schedule and runs right into her. Maeve walks straight into Otis. * Why does Maeve ‘take the fall’ for Otis? Otis was looking down and ‘not paying attention’ when he ran into Maeve. It’s mostly his fault they ‘ran into’ each other. Maeve has self-esteem issues and social class issues. She may simply not ‘want to deal with’ Otis and wants Otis to ‘go away’. But the rest of the episode has her relatively protective of Otis. Does Maeve know of Otis Milburn? * Both Otis Milburn and Jackson Marchetti essentially take the first opportunity available to them to flirt with Maeve. Maeve at this time is physically attracted to Jackson and doesn’t seem physically attracted to Otis (at least not enough to have sex with Otis). ENGLISH CLASS SCENE: * Maeve glances down at Otis when she walks in class to her seat. * Otis ‘checks Maeve out’ before she sits down, and Maeve sees this. Maeve thus would reason Otis is physically attracted to her. * How does Maeve know exactly when Otis looked back at her again? The times Maeve knows when Otis is looking at her are possibly to likely because of pheromones. Maeve probably is picking up on Otis’s pheromones. NIGHTTIME CAR SCENE: * Maeve has sex with Jackson in his car the night after the day he expresses interest in her. But she doesn’t want to actually date Jackson and doesn’t seem to have feelings for Jackson. Given one needs to be 17 years old before one can drive a car in the UK, Jackson Marchetti and Ruby Mathews are already 17 years old in S01E01. We soon learn Maeve is 17 years old. Otis is still 16 years old . So, Maeve is over 1 year older than Otis. * I assume Jackson doesn’t know Maeve lives in a caravan in a ‘trailer park’. SCIENCE CLASS SCENE: * Maeve expresses annoyance at Otis that he has to sit next her to in science class. She’s not sitting next to Aimee. * It’s ambiguous, but there’s hint that Maeve likes Otis. When he’s not looking at her, she’s smiling. She smiles when Otis easily opens the condom packet. It’s possible Maeve has some level of physical attraction to Otis. * Does Maeve consider Otis is simply embarrassed to ‘put on the condom’ in front her or does she consider he may be sexually inexperienced and perhaps has never put on a condom before? Given S01E05, it seems the former is more likely. * Otis has zero trouble easily talking to Maeve. And he’s easily assertive with her. He tells her she’s incorrect. He takes her pen from her. * Maeve initially finds the Otis Milburn’s mother ‘wank)ng’ a vegetable funny—when Otis doesn’t know what the class is laughing at on their phones. But she immediately feels bad for Otis when the video is ‘shown to the class’. Maeve seems possibly the only student in the class who feels bad or Otis. The rest of the students in class simply find it funny. Part of the reason Maeve feels bad for Otis is simply because of her ‘social outcast’ status. But S01E01 is perhaps the first time Otis and Maeve have ever spoken to each other. Maeve had sex with Jackson—the current most popular guy in school—and he seems to want to be her boyfriend. Maeve’s feeling so bad for Otis makes it possible she already has some feelings or interest in him or at least somewhat likes him. In any case, she cares at least somewhat about him and his feelings. ASBESTOS BATHROOM SCENE: * Maeve likely develops some feelings for Otis when he gives the therapy session to Adam. Otis to Adam: “It shouldn’t matter what anyone in the school thinks [of you]. {Shows reaction of Maeve maybe developing some feelings for Otis.} You are who you are. Don’t let anyone take that away from you.” Otis actually mostly doesn’t care what the school thinks of him. He has Eric. And Otis is a relatively privileged kid. Both Maeve and Eric have mocking nicknames that the school calls them. Otis while not popular doesn’t actually seem unpopular. Otis to Adam: “Be proud of your penis and your heritage. ‘Cause neither are going anywhere. {Reaction shot of Maeve. Maeve is not proud of her heritage. Maeve considers herself ‘white trash’.} “You should work with what you got.” {Reaction shot of Maeve. Maeve smiles and considers this.} Otis doesn’t work out at all. And Otis is the son of two world-renowned sex therapists and his family—including his father—is worth perhaps 8-figures. Otis is very comfortable with his socioeconomic position and he simply doesn’t want to be embarrassed by his mother. But he respects her job. And he respects his father and currently actually seems to like his father more than he likes his mother. Maeve has major self-esteem issues because of her socioeconomic status. She knows she’s smart and she does very well in school. She reads a lot. But it takes the encouragement from Otis and Ms. Emily Sands (Maeve’s English teacher) for Maeve to ‘strive’ and think better of her possible future. Without Otis and Ms. Sands as mentors and inspiration, Maeve may not have tried to ‘better herself’ as she does. * Maeve gets Adam Groff to apologize to Otis for sending the Jean Milburn ‘wank)ng the vegetable’ video around and Otis seems surprised she does this. * Would Maeve have ‘hung out’ with Otis if Otis hadn’t fixed Adam’s ‘sexual problem’? OUTSIDE SCHOOL SCENE: * Maeve seems to get at least a little jealous when Jackson is seemingly flirting with Ruby. It doesn’t seem Jackson ever had sex with Ruby. And Jackson never cheated on Maeve. - S01E05 is And then there’s S02E06 (Otis’s party) and S02E07 (the aftermath of that party). * How does Otis know Maeve was looking at him? Did he just happen to glance in her direction? Is he picking up her pheromones? In any case, Maeve is already at least somewhat interested in Otis. But would Otis/Maeve ever be likely had Otis not successfully ‘cured’ Adam? Would Maeve have ever tried to befriend Otis? A large part of Maeve’s physical attraction to Jackson is Jackson’s being Head Boy of Moordale, his being a star athlete, and his possibly ‘going places’ in the future. Otis is 16 years old and he’s already a good sex therapist. Unless Jackson wins a gold medal at the Summer Olympics, is Jackson likely to be more successful than Otis? And already in S01E01: Maeve seems to like Otis more than she likes Jackson and she cares about Otis more than she cares about Jackson. OTIS’S BEDROOM SCENE: * Did Maeve leave the female anatomy worksheet with Otis? She writes: “Maeve and Otis” and circles the 2 names together. Otis ‘wank)s’ to the thought of Otis/Maeve. It’s the first time we see him ‘wa)k’. Otis’s attraction to Maeve seems almost entirely physical at this point. So, Otis has a bunch of interactions with Maeve, Maeve seems to care at least somewhat about him, Maeve gets Adam to apologize to Otis, Maeve tells Otis she’ll ‘see him around’. Otis cannot ‘finish’ or simply doesn’t want to. In the morning, he throws out his magazine and lotion. And tells his mother: “I can’t mas)urbate, but I don’t want to talk about it. I’m dealing with it on my own.” MORNING SCHOOL SCENE: * Otis doesn’t want Maeve’s seeing him with his helmet on—he doesn’t look as ‘cool’ with it on. * Otis is relatively confident and flirty with Maeve in the scene. * Is Maeve actually flirting with Otis when she takes off his helmet and such or is she pretending to flirt with him? I consider she’s mostly pretending. Maeve knows Otis is physically attracted to her; so, she uses that to get him to agree to her sex therapy business plan. Maeve may have some physical attraction to Otis in S01E01, but she wouldn’t have sex with him.
  3. RESPONSES TO THE THREAD: * Otis Milburn and Maeve Wiley haven’t even kissed each other, and they are by far the most interesting, multi-layered, and compelling ‘ship in Sex Education and among the best pairings ever in television and film. I don’t see how they are “boring” and “trite”. Name a comparable pairing in television and/or film.
  4. RESPONSES TO THE THREAD: * Maeve Wiley knows becoming a professional leads to financial success. And Ms. Sands is ‘mentoring’ and championing Maeve. And Otis Milburn was encouraging Maeve. * Maeve knows she’s very intelligent. She was making money from writing and selling ‘A*’ essays and papers. Maeve reads so much largely to ‘better’ herself. EDIT: Aimee GIbbs is openly Maeve's friend in Season 1 and everyone knows she's Maeve's friend. Aimee simply chose Maeve over The Untouchables, thus becoming an even better friend to Maeve.
  5. RESPONSES TO THE THREAD: * Otis Milburn knows Maeve Wiley is ‘into’ him and he likely knows Maeve broke up with Jackson Marchetti because she’s actually ‘into’ Otis. Otis doesn’t know in S01E08 and in S02E01 that Maeve is in love with Otis. Remember: After The Moment in S01E05, Maeve rushes away and goes back to Maeve/Jackson. At the Dance, after learning how Jackson ‘got’ her, she tells Otis that Otis and she “are done” and whisks away with Jackson, doesn’t communicate with Otis, then at Moordale tells Otis she doesn’t trust him anymore, etc. Otis apologizes to her by giving her the letter and the trophy. And then it doesn’t seem Otis and Maeve have much of any contact after Otis gave Maeve the letter and trophy. In S02E01, Otis says Maeve has ‘moved on’ and so has he. The tension between Otis and Maeve in SE02E01 is because Otis knows Maeve has feelings for him and that he has feelings for her; and that Maeve knows Otis has some level of feelings for her. All of post-S01E05 is because of The Moment that happens in S01E05. It’s arguable Maeve actually fell in love with Otis in S01E05 (or realizes she is) but Otis wasn’t actually in love with Maeve even in S01E08. Otis is relatively not jealous that Maeve was having casual sex with Jackson. Otis doesn’t tell Maeve that Jackson is trying to get Otis to get Maeve to be Jackson’s girlfriend. Otis blurts out to Jackson things about Maeve that could result in Maeve’s being Jackson’s girlfriend. Maeve in S01E04 knows Otis is physically attracted to her, but it doesn't seem she considers Otis is jealous of Maeve/Jackson. Otis in the Pool Scene seems to actually encourage Maeve's becoming Jackson's girlfriend. Otis finally admits to Eric Effoing on ‘having a crush’ on Maeve because of the Pool Scene in S01E04, but then Otis is relatively fine after Maeve/Jackson become a couple. And Otis sabotages The Moment in S01E05 preventing Maeve from kissing him. And then Otis tells Ola Nyman that Otis/Maeve couldn’t happen because Maeve is at least a few steps ‘up the food chain’. Does Otis actually believe that given The Moment and everything after? “In love” means loving the person and wanting to have sex with the person. Otis in Season 1 couldn’t even wa)k until the last scene of S01E08. He felt bad and ‘wrong’ that he had a ‘wet dream’ of Otis/Maeve. Otis couldn’t even ‘finish’ after the Pool Scene. Otis never ‘made a move’ on Maeve. Otis got with Ola instead. It doesn’t seem Otis ever visited Maeve at her pretzel place mall job. It's possible S01E05 is the first time Maeve considers Otis actually likes her and wants to date her. And that's because Otis expresses anger toward her that she doesn't seem to want to be around him outside of when she needs something from him and the clear subtext is he's jealous that she's 'with' Jackson.
  6. * It’s possible Maeve Wiley heard the voicemail Otis Milburn left her. It has been on her phone for possibly hours and she would have seen Otis left her a message. She could simply be seeing how Isaac would react to hers leaving her phone with him. I’m not sure why Maeve is smiling when looking up at the stars other than she won the Quiz Heads thing and her future is possibly now bright as a shining star. Maeve would clearly like that Otis is in love with her, but she could still be uncertain about Otis/Maeve. Isaac is correct that Otis lives in a different world than she does. And Otis got with Ola instead of Maeve even though he drunkenly admitted to the school and both Maeve and Ola that he didn’t actually want to be with Ola and that he wanted to be with Maeve. But then Otis drunkenly tells the school and Maeve that he considers she’s the most selfish person he’s ever met. Given S01E05 is when Maeve fell in love with Otis (or realizes she is), that stung. And Otis had sex with Ruby Mathews. Was Maeve actually intimidated by Jackson Marchetti’s social class (upper middle class at most)? Maeve’s best friend is Aimee Gibbs, who is clearly at least lower upper class. And does Maeve know anything about Otis’s father? Even as-is, Maeve knows Otis is at least upper middle class when simply including his mother and him. So, in reality, Maeve likely flakes on Jackson’s family dinner because Maeve doesn’t actually love Jackson. But Maeve decides to stay in her caravan park rather than go to the school play even though she earlier told Otis that she might go to the play after the Quiz Team finals. Maeve could simply not be ready or willing to deal with Otis/Maeve hours after still was "disappointed" in Otis. She can see Otis at school the next day; she can see whether Isaac would try to sabotage Otis/Maeve (meaning whether she’d still want Isaac as a friend); she can see if Otis tries to see her that night. Finally, Maeve might not even fully trust Otis’s declaration of love. What if Ruby were smart? The most Otis sacrificed for Maeve is continuing to help in S01E05 instead of go be with Eric Effoing and Otis ‘stole’ the writing trophy and gave it to Maeve. Maeve in S01E01 ‘took for fall’ for Otis. She doesn’t even consider sharing the blame then and doesn’t even consider sharing the blame in S01E08. Maeve is celibate very likely after S01E06 (after sniffing Otis’s ‘jumper’/sweater). She's been 'pining' for Otis from the end of S01E06 throughout S02E08. And Maeve is very jealous and very hurt by Otis/Ola. And then by Otis/Ruby. Otis didn’t actually seem relatively jealous of Maeve/Jackson and actually made them a couple in the first place. And then doesn’t get with Maeve after she dumps Jackson. Otis is jealous of Maeve and Isaac, but that gets drunk Otis to dance with other girls, dance beside Maeve but not with Maeve (meaning he doesn’t even try to touch her), and then to insult Maeve, and then to make out with other girls and have sex with Ruby. So, Maeve declares her love for Otis to Otis and Otis stays with Ola. Otis texts Maeve that he cannot see Maeve anymore. Ola dumps Otis. Otis throws a party and doesn’t invite Maeve. Maeve shows up and that ends up with Otis insulting Maeve and having sex with Ruby. Otis might need to do more than a voicemail to demonstrate to Maeve that he’s in love with her. In S01E8, he wrote a hand-written letter to her, wrapped ‘her’ trophy, and hand delivered it. Jackson Marchetti actually lived with Maeve. RESPONSES TO THE THREAD: * It’s still doubtful that Otis Milburn’s charging money for his advice is actually what got Jean Milburn so upset. Jean wasn’t at the school when Otis was doing The Clinic. The students needed Otis’s advice, were glad for it, and Otis helped a lot of people and Jean knows all of this. The students preferred Jean because she didn’t charge them money—many to most likely would have stayed with The Clinic if they’d known Jean was taking notes so that she could use those notes in a book—and she was more qualified than Otis. And if Remi Milburn was on campus, most students likely would have gone to Remi instead of Jean simply because Remi is much more renowned. * Jean’s advice wasn’t always perfect. Otis actually helped Olivia. Jean freaked out Olivia’s boyfriend. Otis was largely distracted when he’s giving the ‘asexual’ girl advice. And, frankly, it’s possible the asexual girl is NOT asexual. She may have simply not met the ‘right person’. Otis himself could have been categorized as asexual. Maeve Wiley was shocked and bewildered that Otis was a virgin. It took his relationships with Maeve and Ola for Otis to even ‘wa)k’. And Eric Effiong had to force Otis to pursue Otis/Maeve. And Eric encouraged Otis to have sex with Ola even though Otis was having doubts. Jean is very clinical and immediately categorizes clients. OTIS/MAEVE: * Otis/Maeve is so interesting because of (1) the dynamics between them including the looks of the actors, the school dynamics, society (including social classes [Maeve is ‘working poor’ at best and Otis is lower upper class at worst]), etc., (2) the chemistry and acting abilities of the actors, (3) the extraordinary writing of Otis/Maeve, (4) the reasons why they aren’t together, and (5) because it manages to be realistic—and not necessarily in that order. Otis/Maeve are never truly a platonic friendship. Otis is physically attracted to Maeve before they bump into each other in S01E01 and it’s arguable Maeve is already developing feelings for Otis during the sex therapy session he does with Adam Groff. Part of the dynamic is Otis’s initial attraction to Maeve is her looks and he doesn’t ‘fall for her’ until he learns about her mind. And his interest grows in her as she better utilizes that mind (the aptitude scheme, Quiz Heads, etc.). This works excellently in Season 2. On Maeve’s side, in S01E03, she says Otis is ‘not her type’. But when Jackson Marchetti displays things in common with Maeve and Maeve starts considering whether to have Jackson as a boyfriend, the Pool Scene between Otis/Maeve is telling. - Maeve actually likes Otis and actually has fun with him. She’s mostly simply f)king Jackson. - Maeve created a scenario in which the school would know Otis and she were swimming together. But then Otis tells her to leave and he stays in the pool. - In S01E05, she essentially chooses to be around Otis rather than stay at Jackson’s family dinner. - In S01E05, Otis/Maeve ramps up because Maeve considers there is real risk that she may lose Otis. In Amy Gibbs house, Otis decides to leave Maeve to go be with Eric. Maeve then greatly strengthens Otis/Maeve by confiding in Otis the origin of how she’s an ‘outcast’—the origin of her being “Co(kbiter”. Essentially, Maeve gets jealous of Otis-Eric and gets Otis to stay with her instead of go be with Eric. Maeve gets jealous when she sees Otis interacting with Ola. I’m not sure if Maeve before this realizes she is or simply was sexually attracted to Otis. Then obviously Otis messes up The Moment by blurting out he’s a virgin. And Maeve decides to fall back to Maeve/Jackson. But S01E05 is when Maeve realizes she’s in love with Otis. “In love” means loving someone and wanting to have sex with that someone. S01E05 has Otis demonstrating to Maeve that he loves her by staying with Maeve instead of being with Eric. But Otis’s sabotaging Maeve's kissing Otis signaled to Maeve that Otis maybe wasn’t in love with her. The rest of Otis/Maeve in Season 1 is because of The Moment. - Sidenote: I forgot that Maeve is 17 years old in S01E03 and she has another birthday in S02E03. I don’t recall Otis having a birthday in Season 2. Eric turns 17 years old in S01E05, and apparently Jackson Marchetti and Rudy Mathews were already 17 years old before S01E01. * Otis in S01E08 doesn’t actually consider Maeve ‘out of his league’ given The Moment and everything after shows him that Maeve is clearly interested in him. Otis chooses Ola because Ola is safe, not into anyone else, Otis/Ola has no drama, and Otis doesn’t know Maeve is in love with him. Otis considers Maeve is interested in him, probably wants to date him, and would have dumped Jackson for him, but Otis is in love with Maeve and decides he cannot be with Maeve unless she’s in love with him and so he decides to see if Otis/Ola can be something. * Otis doesn’t seem to know that Maeve in S01E08 ‘took the fall’ for him. I consider Otis wouldn’t have chosen Ola if he knew what Maeve did for him. * Otis/Maeve in Season 2 couldn’t have been much different—other than the ending—given what happened in S01E08. Maeve was too insecure, chickened out, and didn’t tell Otis she’s in love with him. Otis invests in Otis/Ola and tries to ‘get over’ Maeve even though he clearly never does and flirts with Maeve throughout Season 2. Otis in Season 2 wanted Maeve to tell him she’s in love with him. But he gets angry with her that she doesn’t do that until he’s about to have sex with Ola Nyman. And that results in the ending of Otis/Ola. The rest of the Season seemingly all happens within a few days (less than a week?) after Maeve essentially told Otis she loved him.
  7. * Does Maeve Wiley know Otis Milburn is a ‘gamer’? I don’t imagine Maeve’s being into books and Otis’s being into video games would somehow hamper their possible future relationship. * Why doesn’t Aimee Gibbs get a bike and ride that bike to school? * Otis isn’t in love with Ola Nyman because he’s in love with Maeve and he considers its very likely Maeve has feelings for him—especially given the ending of S02E03. * When does Maeve learn that Otis is about to have sex with Ola? THE OTIS/MAEVE SCENE * There’s nothing wrong with Maeve’s telling Otis that she wants to be with him and that she doesn’t want him to remain with Ola. Otis’s reaction is largely because Maeve stayed with Jackson throughout Season 1 even after S01E05 after Otis/Maeve had The Moment. And then didn’t see Otis after S01E08. Otis in S02E01 says Maeve’s ‘moved on’. Maeve initially in Season 1 ‘strung Otis along’ without any real intention of ‘getting physical’ with Otis. It isn’t until she sees Otis with Ola in S01E05 that she considers ‘getting physical’ with Otis. And that’s because she’s jealous of the Otis/Ola interaction, but that jealousy only happens because Maeve becomes at least somewhat ‘into’ Otis the moment she learns his sex advice in S01E01 worked. Here in S02E04, it’s possible she knows Otis is about to have sex with Ola; so, Maeve decides to tell Otis she’s in love with him. And it’s likely Otis knows this and that’s why he’s angry with Maeve. “Why are you telling this now?” It seems both Otis didn’t visit Maeve at the mall or anything and Maeve seems to have stayed away from Otis after S01E08. Otis pursued Maeve in Season 1 even after Maeve had sex with Jackson Marchetti. Otis’s kissing Ola and Maeve’s seeing that in S01E08 in Otis’s mind probably shouldn’t have prevented Maeve from expressing her feelings for Otis to Otis after S01E08. * Otis has known since the end of S01E05—at-latest—that Maeve is into him. She just in S02E04 tells him she’s in love with him. Otis stays with Ola as punishment to Maeve for Maeve’s staying with Jackson and not getting with Otis and the rest of the reason is to try to be a ‘good guy’ and ‘good boyfriend’ even though he clearly prefers Maeve to Ola. ________________________________________ * Ola knows Otis is into Maeve. I never support such jealousy. If Ola cannot handle the Otis/Maeve stuff, she shouldn’t be with Otis. What Maeve did in S02E04 is completely fine. She should have expressed her feelings to Otis in S01E08. Her ‘taking the fall’ for both her brother and Otis already demonstrated she loves Otis. Maeve simply got insecure regarding Otis/Maeve when she sees Otis kissing Ola. Ola’s in S02E04 telling Otis to no longer be friends with Maeve is not okay. Otis and Maeve never even dated. Otis hasn’t cheated on Ola with Maeve. Jackson couldn’t handle Otis/Maeve and Maeve was no longer as interested in Jackson. So, Maeve/Jackson broke up. If Ola cannot handle Otis/Maeve, she should break up with Otis or try to trust him that he won’t cheat on her with Maeve. RESPONSES TO THE THREAD: * I agree that Viv needs some social skills and some emotional intelligence. Someone like Jackson and someone like Otis can be more successful simply because they can be likable and get along with people and thus have power and influence.
  8. * Aimee Gibbs seemingly assumes Otis Milburn would dump Ola Nyman for Maeve Wiley if he merely knew Maeve liked him and wanted to date him. * It’s great Lily Iglehart has a great storyline for Season 2. She’s becoming a ‘film’ writer, director, and producer. Moordale seems to encourage the talent of its talented students. I wonder why we haven’t seen any business classes at the school? * I don’t have a problem with Otis’s behavior at the dinner table nor at monopoly. His mother is dating his girlfriend’s father and that father is very annoying: using all the hot water, making smoothies when Otis is trying to have an important conversation with his mother, etc. In addition, Otis doesn’t exactly want a new father figure and wouldn’t consider Jakob Nyman comparable to Remi Milburn. Despite all of Remi’s faults, Remi is a professional, well-respected, and rich. And Remi is Otis’s actual father and Remi isn’t dating (or example) Maeve’s mother. * I wonder if Otis hadn’t ‘ruined’ ‘the moment’ in Season 1 when Maeve and he were about to kiss if Maeve would have dumped Jackson Marchetti and been with Otis. Maybe in Season 2 Maeve considered that Otis would distance himself from Ola and get closer to Maeve after Otis/Maeve restarted the Clinic. And that when Otis instead got closer to Ola that that meant to Maeve that maybe Otis was no longer as ‘into’ Maeve? Otherwise, I’m not sure why Maeve would consider Otis maybe doesn’t like her ‘that way’ anymore. * It’s nice that Jackson is still in love with Maeve. * The Seasons are 8 episodes and less than 1 hour per episode and yet it manages to have several characters with compelling stories and storylines. I’m actually surprised Season 2 has such focus on the non-Main 4 characters (and really even Jane Milburn has more of a storyline this Season than last). Aimee’s such a ‘helper’ and ‘good friend’ she couldn’t express her actual reaction to Maeve regarding the bus assault. * Otis’s shows some darkness when he tells Jakob, “I already have a dad.” * That ending scene is Asa Butterfield’s best acting the entire series (meaning series not Season) so far. Otis knows Maeve’s into him. What he doesn’t know is if she actually wants to and/or is ready to date him i.e. have sexual relations with him. He certainly doesn’t know she’s in love with him. I’m not sure why Maeve ‘chicken’s out’, but it’s likely she knows Otis hasn’t had sex with Ola yet. Maeve isn’t at the point of risking ‘letting her heart out’ in case Otis rejects Maeve and stays with Ola. And Maeve doesn’t yet consider Otis is lost to her. Emma Mackey is PHENOMENAL in this role. Her eyes are watery when she decides to not express her feelings to Otis. RESPONSES TO THE THREAD: * Aimee baked a cake for Maeve. It shows how much Aimee likes/(loves?) Maeve. * Ola is still likely very concerned about Otis/Maeve. Ola deals with that. Otis’s behavior toward her father wouldn’t be enough for hers to dump Otis. And if Ola did dump Otis, she knows that’d simply result in Otis/Maeve. Ola still likes Otis and still wants to continue their sexual relations. * There’s also clearly a class thing regarding Jane’s and Otis’s reaction to Jakob. Jakob doesn’t act in a refined way and doesn’t eat in the civilized way Jane and Otis eat. And Otis very likely looks down on Jakob’s profession. It’s interesting and perhaps telling that it doesn’t seem Otis ever visited Maeve at the mall when Maeve was working at that ‘pretzel shop’.
  9. * Otis is flirting with Maeve when he asks her if she’s going to the fair. I wonder if Otis would dump Ola if he sees Maeve expressing interest in someone else. * What is the financial aid situation like in the United Kingdom? In the United States, someone as smart as Maeve Wiley (if she were a US citizen) could possibly get a ‘full ride’ to a ‘Tier 2’ school and possibly even a ‘Tier 1’ school—The upper Ivies, Stanford, etc. Maeve knows she’s very smart, but she has relatively extremely low self-esteem regarding her possible future. She needs heavy encouragement from those like Otis Milburn and Ms. Emily Sands. Maeve’s future goal is literally simply to no longer live in a caravan. She wants to be able to live in a small house big enough to have kitchen table that can accommodate 4 chairs. And she considers she’ll be alone even though she looks like Emma Mackey and her last boyfriend was someone like Jackson Marchetti. * I wonder if Maeve’s self-esteem issues contribute to hers trying to deny that she remains ‘into’ Otis. She literally competes with Ola in S02E02.
  10. * Before Maeve takes Otis to her ‘caravan’ park, how many students knew Maeve lived in a caravan? Jackson certainly didn’t before Maeve took him to her ‘trailer park’. Maeve’s complete lack of popularity seems because Ruby (and the other Untouchables) keeps Maeve unpopular. The Untouchables know Maeve is friends with Aimee (one of the Untouchables). Maeve arguably gains more popularity by being friends with Otis and doing the Clinic than she gained by dating Jackson Marchetti. * I consider it likely the only reason Otis doesn’t have a car is Jean is so overprotective of him and doesn’t want his able to so freely travel. - Sidenote: I don’t understand why Jean has such an old car. MORE RESPONSES TO THE THREAD: * Maeve’s reaction at the dance to learning Otis’s essentially ‘forced’ her to date Jackson and that then Otis give her the money Jackson gave him is because of what she considers that demonstrates about Otis’s feelings for and regard for her. And Otis knows that. When Maeve at the dance tried to sabotage Otis/Ola, Maeve considered Otis would actually prefer to be with Maeve instead of Ola and Maeve was clearly about to dump Jackson. It’s highly unlikely Maeve even kissed Jackson after the dance much less have sex with Jackson. From Maeve’s perspective, Otis however far from being jealous of Maeve/Jackson perhaps subconsciously forced her to date Jackson rather than try to date her himself. And Otis clearly sabotaged ‘the moment’ between Otis/Maeve when they were clearly about to kiss. The money thing is obvious: it hits hard on Maeve’s insecurity regarding her socioeconomic status. * Lily isn’t a good match for Otis Milburn. Otis clearly likes Maeve. If anything, Ola is a lesser version of Maeve. Ola also has a nose ring and has tattoos. Ola is shorter, less good-looking, etc. Ola is of a higher social class than Maeve, but Otis doesn’t actually care too much that Maeve lives in a caravan. And Ola’s family is ‘poor’ compared to the Milburns. * It’s possible Maeve is ‘emancipated’—whatever the British version of that is. Maeve’s brother probably helped with the bills when he’s around. And Maeve was clearly struggling financially, probably got her clothes at thrift shops, etc. The school doesn’t seem an expensive ‘private’ school. Maeve lives in the area and very likely tested very well. * Headmaster Groff was trying to put all the blame and punishment on either Maeve Wiley or her brother for the ‘drug dealing’ and the ‘incident’ at the dance. Groff was essentially fully protecting Otis Milburn. Jackson Marchetti is Head Boy, but Otis is a rich kid and Groff probably considers Maeve was trying to take advantage of Otis’s nerdiness. He tells Otis to ‘beware of the wild female’.
  11. * Is Otis Milburn subconsciously trying to ‘get over’ Maeve Wiley by constantly ‘wank(ng’ over any visual or physical ‘stimulus’? In Season 1, it takes hanging out with Maeve and then actually kissing Ola (after Maeve expressed clear interest in Otis) for his to ‘wa)k’. It’s notable that Otis isn’t utilizing his relationship with Ola for such personal pleasure and instead ‘wa)ks’. Not a good sign for Otis/Ola. I’m not sure Otis was so ‘bottled up’ that essentially any ‘stimulus’ resulted in his ‘reaction’. S02E01 makes clear that many students are sleeping around, Otis has a girlfriend, and yet Otis isn’t doing much of anything sexual outside of ‘self-gratification’. * Does Otis even know Maeve was ‘expelled’? It’s possible Otis didn’t get his family to provide legal representation to Maeve because Maeve couldn’t exactly ‘get out of’ admitting to selling drugs to fellow students at school and that such drugs almost resulted in the death of a student and that as-is, that student was psychically harmed by such drugs. However, does Otis even know about the drugs? * The new French Middle Eastern guy isn’t THAT attractive; although, maybe compared to the other guys in school… His entrance scene reminds of Stefan Salvatore’s entrance at Mystic Falls in The Vampire Diaries. But Paul Wesley is much better looking and the Salvatores are essentially nobles in Mystic Falls. * It’s great that the series manages to make Jackson Marchetti interesting after Season 1. In S1, he’s mostly there as ‘competition’ for Otis regarding Maeve and another reason Otis/Maeve doesn’t happen in S1. Lily is so far there to be Ola’s friend and maybe provide advice to Ola regarding Ola’s relationship with Otis. * Is Maeve Wiley a natural blonde? * Why hasn’t Emma Mackey even been nominated for anything? She does great movie/film acting in a TV series. * Regarding Maeve’s ending smile—did someone see the ending of Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s series finale “Chosen” (BtVS 7.22)? RESPONSES TO THE THREAD: * Emma Mackey is stunning; so, it’s not as if her looks would be sullied by a new hair color. If anything, it seems her hair coloring, hair products, and makeup are all much improved over Season 1. And her hair styling is much improved. I’m not sure if that’s the character having more money for such products and haircuts or if simply the actor could demand such improvements and got them. It’s also possible Mackey wanted the brown color for her movie roles and it’s maybe her actual hair color? * WebMD is mostly not useful. It seems sex education at Moordale is severely lacking. And most people freak out about STDs/STIs. * Sex Education isn’t a silly show. It’s among the best TV series of the last several years. And arguably the best ‘teen series’ since Buffy the Vampire Slayer S1-S3. * Otis Milburn, aside from his sexual issues, is relatively very privileged. He comes from a rich and respected family. He’s tall and not ugly. He’s smart. And he’s able to get Maeve Wiley to prefer his virgin self over Jackson Marchetti. In addition, he already has an almost guaranteed very successful career path.
  12. Before I forget to write this: The dance in S01:E07 arguably indicated that Otis was already arguably at least among the most popular people in the school. The entire dancefloor was cleared for his and Eric’s dancing together. It’d be interesting for Maeve to meet Remi. She was intimidated by Jackson’s family, but they are upper middle class at most. The Milburns are actually rich—worth possibly 8-figures. Maybe Otis and Maeve visit Remi in the United States? Remi is semi-famous and obviously has connections with publishers. Maeve is a great writer… RESPONSES TO THE THREAD: * We must remember the series is only 16 episodes in. The episodes aren’t even hour-long. We’ve gotten around less than a regular full 22-episode TV series. In some ways, it wouldn’t have been any more ‘climatic’ had Otis/Maeve gotten together or even merely kissed in the last scene of S02E08. Season 1 had Otis not even able to mast(rbate until S1E08. Season 2 had Otis with Ola and still not sexually progressing much. We’ll see how Season 3 goes. * Jean was doing research in the school. And she was getting material for a book that might net her 7-figures or heck even 8-figures. She wasn’t ‘doing it for free’. Remi Milburn has at least 2 international Number 1 bestsellers, and 3 including the one he made with Jean. Remi has other children, but Otis is likely the first born and probably most liked. Remi is getting divorced, but it's unlikely he didn't have a per-nupital agreement and he doesn't seem at all concerned about the financial cost of the divorce; so, Otis is likely getting a relatively hefty inheritance. Otis doesn’t need the money from The Clinic, but Maeve did. The only reason she wasn’t struggling in Season 2 is her mother left her a small stack of cash. * It doesn’t seem Maeve was a virgin before having sex with Jackson. It seems she literally has sex with Jackson the night of the day he expressed interest in her. We still don’t know when Maeve lost her virginity. It’s possible Jackson was her first actual boyfriend. I’m not sure it’s a bad thing if Otis ‘sows his oats’ at some point. He doesn’t even remember his time with Ruby. However, given the series title, maybe Maeve teaches Otis about sex. * Regarding the Sex Clinic, Jean is likely mostly upset because Otis kept such a big secret from her. Was she actually angry that Otis charged money?
  13. * I’m again surprised at how the series made Otis/Maeve make sense. I also consider Otis probably stayed with Ola partly as punishment for Maeve’s being with Jackson and staying with Jackson. And I consider Maeve didn’t approach Otis sooner after Season 1 because of Maeve’s socioeconomic status. Maeve was kicked out of school. And when she’s back, Ola is also in the ‘smart kid class’ and such. Maeve approaches Otis after she wins her first Quiz Team match and very likely after knowing Otis is about to have sex with Ola. RESPONSES TO THE THREAD * Drunk Otis is there to further indicate that Otis is somewhat like his father. And that includes there’s no guarantee that Otis wouldn’t cheat on Maeve. Drunk Otis is also there to indicate Otis’s social status at the school. Otis is arguably now the most popular kid in school. And his mother is now a great strength to that popularity. Maeve is currently the love of Jackson’s life and Otis said that Otis could actually ‘do much better’. * Jean was considered superior to Otis mainly because Jean wasn’t charging the students money for her services. And she at times gave better advice than Otis did. * Jean is a ‘renowned’ sex therapist and best-selling author. The scandal could hurt her career. Otis and Maeve are students. The money they got could simply be considered gifts from the students. The only trouble they could possibly get into is tax problems.
  14. * In Season 1, Maeve becomes less interested in Jackson and more interested in Otis after Jackson becomes less dedicated to swimming and starts drinking and such. He suddenly became someone maybe ‘not going places’. If Jackson might become a successful actor, Maeve may become interested in Jackson again. For the United States, the school would be considered middle class and possibly lower upper middle class. Other than perhaps Aimee, Otis, Jackson, and Ruby, there isn’t much indication most of the rest of the student body is well-off. * While I feel bad for Maeve in Season 2, she did string Otis along for all of Season 1 until she dumped Jackson. And when she started dating Jackson and Maeve/Jackson was going well, she was barely interacting with Otis—especially outside of The Clinic. Yet in Season 2, she complains to Otis that Otis is always hanging out with Ola… RESPONSES TO THE THREAD: * The Otis/Maeve ‘romance’ is what much-to-most of the series revolves around. I don’t see how it’s boring given how interesting it is. Maeve starts thinking of her possible great future because of Otis’s encouragement. She wouldn’t likely even be in the aptitude scheme and class were not for Otis. She wouldn’t be on the Quiz Team. And Maeve is arguably the primary reason Otis/Ola happens. And is the reason Otis/Ruby happened. * I said Otis/Ruby is a possibility for Season 3. Not wanting Otis’s child when Ruby’s still in high school doesn’t indicate that she’d never actually date him in Season 3. * Otis asked wheelchair-guy to tell Maeve to check her messages. Wheelchair-guy is clearly into Maeve and sees Otis as THE prime obstacle to Maeve’s dating wheelchair-guy. Otis is unlikely not to check-in with Maeve again. * Otis already knows Maeve’s family is ‘messed up’. The problems with her mother and her half-sister wouldn’t prevent Otis from dating Maeve. If anything, it’d inspire him to try to get her to believe even more in herself.
  15. RESPONSES TO THE THREAD: * Maeve is so in love with Otis that she didn’t even kiss anyone in Season 2. She actually suffered more through Otis/Ola than Otis ever suffered through Maeve/Jackson. The Party is such a big deal for Maeve because Otis literally tells almost the entire school that he considers he could ‘do much better’ than Maeve. The Otis/Ruby thing hits Maeve so hard because of Ruby’s socioeconomic status. And the school considers Ruby of at least around similar beauty/hotness as Maeve. All this is to say that there wouldn’t be a cliffhanger if Otis actually saw Maeve or if Maeve simply heard the voicemail. Wheelchair guy isn’t actual competition for Otis. What could be interesting is if Maeve meets someone while doing college tours or whatever. * As I said, Otis/Ruby could be interesting. Otis dated a plumber’s daughter whom he told her that she was several levels beneath Maeve in physical attractiveness, but that was when his self-esteem was lower. Now he knows Maeve is in love with him and Otis/Ruby is a real possibility. Maeve is currently poor, but she could easily become a lawyer/barrister. Or a successful writer. She’s not destined to remain poor. But Otis seemed willing to marry and a raise a child with Ruby. Anyway, Otis has been attracted to Maeve for years. To have competition, the show would need to introduce a girl/woman of at least similar beauty/hotness and intelligence and drive—that is into Otis—to be actual competition to Maeve. And that’s not easy, as Maeve is easily arguably the best-looking female student at the school and she’s literally among the several smartest people in the school. * The not meet-up between Otis and Maeve is clearly mostly there to get another Season. I consider Maeve purposefully left her phone there and unlocked to ascertain whether wheelchair-guy is even actually a good guy. * No TV series is perfect, but this series is arguably the best teen series since Buffy the Vampire Slayer S1-S3.
