What convoluted, messy family dynamics. The parents were obviously keeping Katherine an addict for their own emotional needs, without a clue what they were doing. Nor did they want to learn, or to change anything.
They've got their family narrative set in concrete, with haloes. And if Katherine dies tragically--which she certainly will--the parents' haloes get that much brighter in their own minds. And Katherine will be in heaven so they can remain content in their constricted fantasy world.
That mother's smug, self-involved smile with martyr mask--oh so beatific--drove me crazy cuz of course she'd been killing her daughter since she was born.
