  1. “Two hot coffees.” Still my favorite.
  2. I forgot, until the opening credits, that M Emmett Walsh had a cameo (the arresting officer) in What’s Up, Doc? It felt exactly right to watch him, on the day after we lost him, work his usual magic with just a few minutes of screen time (“No, sir — they drove in.”) There are a handful of such teeny supporting roles in this film. John Hillerman is a personal fave, as he John-Hillermans his way through his role as Hotel Manager: JH: “I have a message for you from the staff of the hotel.” Ryan O’Neal: “What is it?” JH: “Goodbye.” And I found a new favorite line in this, my jillionth viewing: Madeline Khan: “Well thank you, Miss — “ Barbra Streisand: “Uh…Louise.” MK: “I thought you said ‘Sylvia’?” BS: “Uh yes, Sylvia-Louise…you know, with a hyphen.”
  3. That Kayak ad with the little old lady who dresses up as a scarecrow, climbs up on a post, and squawks at the crows? completely creeps me out. It’s like a scene from a low-budget horror film. As with those godawful Lume ads, I will *sprint in from another room, just to grab the remote and change the freaking channel.
  4. Okay this is funny AF and worthy of being repeated. Great minds, etc — I respect Jessica, but she was Blanche-ing all over that scene.
  5. Eh. I love me some big ol’ D & OLinemen, and whatever voices they choose to use, I’ll laugh my ass off & love ‘em anyway.
  6. Well. It’s done. Starting with what I liked: Appreciated Jack’s and Joanne’s compassion for Truman. No matter how misplaced, it was a breather to watch a couple of people support the fucking main character! (I wrote “the hero” first, and then thought: Nah) LoveloveLOVED that plate-flinging scene with Truman and Slim. Felt genuine and true, even though it was — at the very least — not the latter. Nice moment with CZ & Truman, selling her portrait for whiskies from the appreciative bartender. Not for the first time, it made me wish for a personal angle on the Swans. I want to know why CZ, of all of them, was the one who let him back in. The rest? Disappointing. Extremely. And kinda dull. This wasn’t a hate-watch for me. I don’t really do those (though I’ll probably tune in to the rest of Delicate just to shake my head & wonder why I couldn’t have gotten into Shogun). It was more of a hopeful-watch. And I will say, this series had some moments. Just too many missed opportunities. Much like the writer himself, I mourn the What Might Have Been. But if that was the creators’ intent: fuck ‘em.
  7. Shout out to the stunned & saddened Packers fans. Aaron Jones was the heart of that team. And then he signs with the Purple Incarnation of Satan? (tm Grossi) It’s not exactly the same, but it pings me back to Neil Smith leaving Derrick & KC to play for — even now I can barely type the words — Denver.
  8. Okay, I’ll admit it: I fell asleep before Abby’s time with the psychic (not bored, just tired 🤣) What was the secret word and how did Dan know it?
  9. I loved Eric’s “comeback” 1988 vid of “Make Me Lose Control”. Included such a sweet h/t to the Suzanne Somers character in American Graffiti. My favorite song of his.
  10. I simply could not have borne another season of trolling-on-X by 95. It. Over. We signed him <huuuuge sigh> I’ve loved Chris Jones since he was a rookie — he was a total goofball in those days and funny AF. Glad you got your bag, CJ!!! Now I can unclench.
  11. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 *wipes eyes* Always happy to provoke conversations whenever and wherever I can
  12. I see that affection for John Hodiak belongs in my collection on the Island of Misfit Opinions, along with similar feelings towards Louis Hayward, Ramon Novarro, the 1940 version of Pride & Prejudice, and Kathryn Grayson’s performance in Kiss Me, Kate… This latter preference I genuinely cherish, but also love to trot out from time to time, just to make @Rinaldo roll his eyes 🤣
  13. Eh. A letdown after last week. A few things stood out: Babe’s steely spine in the face of mortality. Respect for that. Joanne’s house. Mock it all you want, Babe — I liked it better than yours. Truman’s eulogy. This month is the anniversary of my father’s passing, so any kind of speech like this, pings hard. I found myself weeping…then I stopped. I knew, even as I was touched by the words, that they probably weren’t actually Truman’s. And I didn’t feel moved anymore: just pissed off & exhausted. I wanted to hear something — anything — of truth at this point. A weird reaction to a drama based on real life.
  14. Jason Kelce. “That’s it. That’s the tweet.” I wept more during George Brett’s retirement speech, but not by much.
  15. Defending John Hodiak was not on this week’s Bingo card, but I must protest these goings-on. I thought he was terrific in Lifeboat, and tbf, also the sexiest leading man Judy Garland ever had. Garson Kanin once described “chemistry” as “Do you want to see them do it?”, and I could’ve to-tal-ly handled the precode version of that relationship.
  16. Not sure if I’m just worn down, but I did find tonight’s episode affecting, rather than exhausting. When the writer in Truman comes out (like when he describes what it’s like to get old), you suddenly snap to his tremendous appeal. OTOH, I thought of the frog and the scorpion parable (“Why did you sting me? Now we’ll both die!” “I can’t help it. It’s in my nature”) and how it foretells the doom of all parties involved. I can’t choose a side here. They’re all rather glorious and awful. One of the few pleasures the series has afforded is its soundtrack, and last week I was struck by the inclusion of “Eres Tu/Touch the Wind”, because the lyrics are really the words to the Babe & Truman love story. Laughed through the scene with his doctor, who is so far the smartest person in the room. And WOW! that moment when Babe and CZ search in vain for the glove department, only to have the salesgirl snipe, “You might try Lord & Taylor.” “Oh you BITCH!” I actually said that out loud.
  17. You’re really teeing it up for me, Charlie 🤣 Of course, you’re right. I’m thinking of the last scene in particular: ”Somebody tell a joke!” ” ‘In time’ you’ll drop dead, and I’ll come to your funeral in a red dress!” ”Do you love him, Loretta?” “Ma, I love him awful!” “Oh God that’s too bad.” I’ll stop.
  18. I remember trying to describe Moonstruck to friends who hadn’t yet seen it (“Like eating tiramisu with your fingers!”). Sweet, messy, amazing. It has everything: romance, transformation, the moon, Puccini. And it’s soooo perfectly cast! from the neighborhood priest who hears Loretta’s confession (“What was that second one?” “ ‘Once I slept with the brother of my fiancé’…” “That’s a pretty big sin!”) to Rose, the neglected wife who finally figures it all out (“Cosmo, I just want you to know…no matter what you do, you’re gonna die, just like everybody else.”). This time around I marveled at that jewel of a proposal scene in Act 1. He was the wrong guy at the wrong time, but it was lovely, just the same.
  19. From TwitterX today…obviously I had to drag it over here. It may not apply to all of you, but I confess I am its target audience:
  20. My new favorite is the Haribo ad with two NFL defensive lineman sharing gummi bears, discussing why they love them in overdubbed kids’ voices. Two of my faves together at last! Football & gummi bears!!
  21. A lovely turn by Chris Chalk as James Baldwin, though I haven’t checked the Did This Really Happen articles for veracity’s sake. Much of what his character said about writers & writing was fucking spot-on & I loved it. But he also lured Truman down the garden path of rationalization — oh, those bitches deserved it! so mean, so spiteful, so two-faced, such bad mothers; so racist, so snobby, so stupid…Burn it all down, Truman! You must destroy the village to save it! This series may as well have been subtitled “Behold: the Consequences of my Actions”. What a circular firing squad this group was.
  22. Props to Marlo Thomas for being able to stand & enunciate after Matt laid that one on her
  23. A recent trending X topic was something to the effect of, Name that moment from a TV show/movie. Easy enough for me with Friends —from “TOW Two Parties” (the gang throws Rachel a surprise party, and when her recently-separated parents both show up, the friends labor to keep them from seeing each other): Everyone except Phoebe is in the hallway, saying goodbye to Rachel’s mom. Phoebe’s in the girl’s’ apartment, trying to delay Rachel’s dad’s departure. When he brushes past her, she shouts out a warning, and Joey — thinking quickly — grabs Mrs G and starts kissing her, as the rest dance around to distract Mr G as he leaves. That is a wordy explanation of a scene that always has me cry-laughing, even though I know it’s coming. IMO, more of a shocker than that morning- after of Chandler & Monica in London.
  24. In the book, it takes Hawkeye awhile to remember why the new guy seemed so familiar. When the penny drops, he explains to Duke how John McIntyre got his name. Quoting from memory so it’s inexact: ”Jesus to Jesus and eight hands around!…[McIntyre was in the train’s bathroom doing it with some girl], and when the conductor found them, she screamed, ‘He trapped me!’…This is the famous Trapper John!” Unsurprising that *that particular anecdote never made it to the small screen.
  25. Yeah once I saw that Slim was screwing Bill, I said “I can’t with these people!” and flicked over to NFL Slimelights on Nickelodeon. Just in time to hear Patrick admonish a player who’d just fumbled: “You must firmly grasp the ball!” After 30 minutes of that sorbet-to-the brain, I flicked back over. Just in time to watch Truman take John’s daughter under his wing (actually a sweet scene, and his writerly words of wisdom were spot-on), and then that reunion scene with Babe! Really, really got me. Even though, IIRC, it is an invention of the series’ creators, I can’t help but think something similar must have played out in their heads hundreds of times.
