  1. I recently logged in for the first time since the site was revamped.  When I choose Manage Followed Content, my list of followed Topics shows up first, as before.  However, the width of the Topic Title column is extremely narrow, displaying no more than 2 characters.  For example, Friends shows up as

    F

    ri

    e

    n

    d

    s (sans the line spacing).

A really long title, such as Shows That Died Before Their Time, extends the entire length of my laptop's screen.  I don't have this problem when displaying Forums that I follow.  There I see, for example,

    Ted

    Lasso (sans the line spacing).

Is there a way to widen the title display for Topics I follow?

  2. As someone who always found Joan Crawford not only NOT beautiful, but actually close to repulsive (harsh, coarse), all I can say is blergh.  😆

The book is written in a close third person format where the only character who's insights we get are Scarlett's.  Every description is Scarlett's opinion of the characters and Scarlett held a very low opinion of Melanie at the beginning of the book.  Melanie was the mousy little cousin who was stealing Ashley away from her after all.

There are a few times we get information Scarlett did not know, such as her mother's backstory and some things going on with Rhett.  I did take her description of Melanie as probably truthful.  Tt seems none of the Wilkes women were graced with good lucks.

The only thing I can think of is that they wanted to represent how truly alone Diana was when she married in to the firm.

But she wasn't alone, unless she chose to be.  According to this article:

    Quote

Sarah and Diana remained close after Diana married Charles and became part of the royal family. Diana biographer Andrew Morton wrote that Sarah was one of the few people Diana trusted during those complicated years. Sarah was often seen with her nephews, Princes William and Harry, out and about in London, and the two sisters often brought their children on vacation together.

Water under the bridge, I guess.

    She was 19. 19.

Perhaps a slightly older woman with a more functional family that wasn’t so enthusiastic to get in with the royals might have thought it through more, but that wasn’t the case here. Plus, he was the freaking prince of Wales, and that would be enough to turn anyone’s head. It’s not like she was the only person that rushed into marriage because she was in love (or thought she was).

Where the heck was her family in all of this??? I think Diana was very ill-served by her father and sisters, who should have prepared her better for the "business" side of the marriage she was entering.  She was 19 chronologically, but as Anne put it, Diana was really younger than 19 and Charles was really older than 32.

I liked the framing of the divorce process by bringing in those other couples.  The second couple really got to me - the husband must have been brought up in poverty and was so afraid of not having money that he couldn't imagine cutting back.

Ugh.  I Ffwd'd through most of those.

Since he's learned the language as a child, the language would return to him much quicker than that. He does seem to understand a lot and while many phrases seem to be simple ones, I would imagine that staying in Italy while filming is helping the language's return along.

I thought his Italian was better in season 1.  He seemed to speak less of it in S2 and it wasn't as good.  Maybe less preparation?

I never knew how much lamb they cook in Italy.

Some regions of Italy.  Regional differences were the whole point of the series! :-)  I'm from Trentino-Alto Adige.  I've never eaten lamb there.   And I knew he wouldn't end up getting to my beautiful homeland.

I'm old enough to remember this incident and while at the time I thought it was hilarious, I'm appalled by the fact that a private conversation could be published just like that, especially one that doesn't involve anything criminal.

And to make money off of it.  Makes me ill.

She seemed very needy and melodramatic.

    I believe she was.

One thing I keep wondering about: where was Diana's older sister during all of this?  According to this article:

Sarah was 6 years older than Diana and had dated Charles.  I would hope that she had counseled her naive younger sister about what she was getting into by marrying him.  It sounds like she was supportive thereafter, so Diana wasn't as totally alone ("no family") as she says to Khan.

If Diana had been a different sort of person, living separate lives while staying married could have worked, as Philip said. Because she and Charles were magic together when they turned on the razzle dazzle. But Diana wanted love and a real partnership, something Charles was unable/unwilling to give her. (Making no judgment on what kind of marriage is preferable; it's whatever the parties agree on, IMO.) The marriage was doomed from the start, as we've always noted.

I think Diana's family was gravely at fault for not explaining the situation to her before the marriage -- or perhaps they did, and she didn't want to believe it.

Lesley Manville is brilliant as Margaret. Loved seeing Timothy Dalton.

I enjoyed this episode because, despite so much of it being known, it still felt “new.” Perhaps it is the cast. Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce inhabit their characters  with weariness, a feeling that they have playing their “royal roles” for much too long.

Ditto on both these points.  I've never been swoony over Timothy Dalton, but he was perfect as older Peter Townsend.  I agree with the weariness aspect of being Queen and consort for so long.

ALEX JENNINGS IS BACK!!!!!! As much as I think the Duke of Windsor was a reprehensible person IRL, I absolutely adore Alex Jennings in this role, and it was an utter shock and delight to see him. IDK how other people will like it, but I really enjoyed this episode.

Alex Jennings rocks it again.  I like episodes that take us back in time.  Such a treat to see the Duke, as awful as he was, turn up again.

I didn't have a problem adjusting to the new actors at the beginning of season three, but I'm having a really hard time with it this season. I think it's because so many of these actors don't resemble the people they're playing, or the previous actors.

As someone who never bought Olivia Coleman as Elizabeth and thought Helena B-C verged on camp as Margaret, I'm liking the new casting well enough.

Well said and quite perceptive. I completely agree that these roles are cast to support the perspective that the writing will take for that season.

When an actress's towering height becomes a distraction, I don't think it's supporting the writing at all.

Lovely to see Clarie Foy again.  She set the bar very high in seasons 1 and 2.

  10. I'm trying to savor the last season so I have watched only the first episode so far.  I quite enjoyed it.  Fun story lines, in typically over the top fashion.  Having Liam Neeson show up as the interrogator was a hoot.  I enjoy little jokes like Gerry berating Erin for renting American Gigolo, only to learn indirectly that Mary was responsible for that one.

That’s because Carrie was never in love with Aidan. I believe she liked him, and genuinely enjoyed spending time with him, but she was more upset about not having a BF any more than not having HIM. Carrie was in love with Big and all she wanted was for him to love her back just a teeny bit.

Exactly.  She had no business jerking AIdan around like that.  He wasn't a consolation prize.

Did they want us to be on Carrie's side?  Did they expect us to feel sorry for her? If Natasha hadn't caught her in their apartment would Carrie have broke it off?  My theory is she wanted Big to leave Natasha for her. Even though she was still with Aiden.  She says she told Aiden because it was the right thing to do and the guilt and all that but I think she hoped after getting caught Big would be free to be with her.

Also, when Carrie broke up with Big for her own stupid reasons, she grieved for ages (start of S2).  When Aidan broke up with her, Carrie focused on "her" apartment -- which was legally Aidan's at the time -- and seemed to bounce back from losing her fiancé with no trouble at all.
