  1. I do wish they could figure out some other way to handle the voting. It’s never been quite right since they cut the separate results show the night after the live dancing show. I recall that, for a little while, they would do eliminations at the end of the weekly show, based on that week’s scores and last week’s votes. It allowed time for everyone to vote on every dance, but sometimes the results felt out of sync - like someone would get a 30 the week after they did badly, and still be eliminated, and it felt like it was at least in part because they were going by last week’s votes. So that didn’t quite work. Surely there must be some other way. The British show tapes a results show for the following day, beginning an hour or so after the live show finishes. It’s only 5pm local time at the studio when our live broadcast starts. Perhaps they could have a dinner break afterwards, then tape a results show once the show is over on the west coast? (With apologies to Hawaii and Alaska.) The British pad it out with extra chitchat, a "dance-off" between the bottom two, and a musical guest and pro dance, some of which is recorded earlier on the day or even on another date. They’re out of the studio maybe around 11:30 or 12:00, which is a long day, but maybe “that’s showbiz.”
  2. It was this independent brand. I noticed it on one of the evidence papers and thought I'd try to track it down. I don't remember the details but the guy had several similar business registrations, one after the other, as if he'd close ABC Skin after shit hit the fan, then move down the street to open DEF Skin. So skeezy!
  3. How awful! I'm sorry that happened. This one was a different company - I looked it up at the time, because I gathered it was near me.
  4. I found it fascinating when Sandy was watching "Joan Is Awful" with her friend. Salma-as-Joan fires her with even less empathy than Annie-as-Joan, and the friend makes a comment like "wow, what a jerk, I can't believe she said that." A look passed over Sandy's face for a split second, like maybe she was going to say "well, it wasn't really as bad as that..." but then she didn't. I thought the actress playing Sandy did a lot with a little there.
  5. I hope he's back too. The last season had only 5 episodes, more like variety specials than a TV season. I don't know how many he was in, but especially in light of this story indicating that the ongoing plan for all the Law & Orders is to have all the regulars take more episodes off per season, I would like to think he could balance both, if there is more of the Schumer show. ETA: Oops, I was looking at the wrong one. I had "Inside Amy Schumer," but the new one is "Life & Beth." That one had 10 episodes and is renewed for another 10. The actor appeared in 7 of the 10. I still really think he could do both.
  6. The tone is totally different, but I was reminded of the “Community” episode where Troy takes an acting class with Britta. The students are pressured to share about their traumas, but Troy has nothing beyond the mundane to offer, so he pretends to have been molested by an uncle. My high school had a big annual retreat. I didn't go - I wasn't prepared to open up in a big group. My sister did. I have no reason to believe inappropriately deep sharing was encouraged, but I recall wondering how secret / private it all really was. I recall the kids wrote letters to each other - maybe they were reviewed. I think in the end, a smaller circle of confidence was better for me then and is better for me now. Not that I've had any major traumas - I just don't like to air my dirty laundry. I'm surprised by what many people I know share on Facebook, never mind in a setting like a retreat. Sometimes I feel bad about being so cynical, but I do think sometimes people just want attention.
  7. Not directly on-topic, so forgive me: My sister suggested we kids get together for a Mother's Day gif this year. She sent several ideas and we picked one, so she ordered it online. The next day, she got an email letting her know it would be another $45 above the quoted price "due to increased flower costs in this area for the holiday." I didn't like the feeling of bait-and-switch, in addition to the price itself, so I told her to forget it and we'd look for something else. Then I noticed the name of the company - Kremp Florist! I told her I'd pay the $45 if they could guarantee Barry would prepare the order. I knew the company was still operating, but never expected to run across them "in the wild." Just sort of interesting.
  8. I guess I'm going a little off topic, but we visited there several years ago and liked it. We are more boardwalk than beach people in these seaside towns. We especially liked Trimper's, the amusement park with several unique classic rides, and found plenty of places to snack. Mom did think the Bay Bridge was a nightmare to drive on. Oh well - can't have it all.
  9. I used to obsessively follow casting news for "my" shows, but I'm trying to spend less time online now. I am so glad I got to b e surprised by Taraji! It was interesting to read that she was a substitute teacher before her career took off. I could be way off, but Jacob's magic tricks felt like something Chris enjoys in real life. Maybe he did a few on set and someone decided to work that into the script. Either way, it was fun to see, and see Jacob get celebrated.
  10. I came here to say that, in an episode without much Ava and one with fewer hijinks than "serious" moments, this was something understated that showed the impact of Ava's ineffectiveness on the teachers. Janine asked whether she could move the meeting up, and Ava brushed her off with the equivalent of "yeah ok whatever." A different principal might have taken 60 seconds to ask for more context and maybe advised against it. Very interesting conversation above, about the positions of Janine and Cassandra. When I was in school, my mother was a homemaker and my father had flexible hours. I've had other cause to think about this vs other families' realities, but I appreciate the way this show calls attention to their perspectives. I understand the impact of being "face to face" vs a phone call. Maybe video call could have been a middle ground? I was curious about that one when it started showing up. It does go with "Goldbergs," which as you said is before "Abbott." If you have a good lens prescription and squint, you see it's "This Episode is Entirely a Work of Fiction, LLC" - a new production company for this season. I know some in the "Goldbergs" forum thought it was a pointed comment about the show becoming disconnected from the real family's life stories, but it's just a weird name.
  11. I remembered the actor playing the son from "Home" back in season 5. In that one, his paranoid and overprotective mother convinces him to murder his younger brother who is not toeing the line, to "save him" from this world. Maybe if he comes back again in another 20 years, they'll give him a functional mom! Michelle Gomez was another unexpected pleasure, although I thought her American accent went in and out like the tide. Appreciate pronounced "appree-see-ate" really stood out, but it was far from the only example I could give. Her performance was definitely a bit over the top but I thought it worked.
  12. I think Essie, Ginzy, and Linda are all real people. About five years ago they had a cameo along with the real Beverly. I'm not sure whether they just used the names or elements of their real-life personalities to develop the characters, except that I know the Kremps still have their florist shop in real life as in th show. I don't know about Lou either.
  13. 4 women accused him of sexual assaults or misconduct over 20 years. I think there has been some related civil litigation, but I haven't followed it.
  14. I thought this latest episode was not bad. The Erica / Beverly role reversal was silly but cute. Calabasas has become a fun recurring character, although you'd think they might remember how deals with him end. It seems Adam has the least to do of everyone, but I don't really miss him. I liked it too, but it isn't available there anymore. IIRC it was already canceled before the allegations against Bryan Callen, so it probably would have faded off the services before too long, but after they came out, I think ABC hoped we'd all forget about it extra quick.
  15. Agree it is, generally speaking, appropriate for teachers on the same level of the hierarchy to date each other. We were thrilled in HS when the ethics and art history teachers got married - they're still together. I do recall that they were very discreet until the wedding was announced - if things hadn't worked out, we students would have been none the wiser. Best not to make the students aware of a casual relationship, for a million reasons. Thank you! I will try that if it happens again. I have captions on most of the time, but this was new for me.
  16. Yes. They're back at Abbott, Ava says she heard a rumor about a hookup, Janine and Gregory act shifty, but it turns out it wasn't them - we see IDK how you watch the show, but I had to refresh my Hulu - the captions were a good 2 or 3 minutes ahead all the way along, then in the end it turned out the progress bar was ahead of the video and it thought it had ended before it actually did. Weird!
  17. Get the heck out of here! This is especially heinous. You can bet I'll be stealing this. ;)
  18. I like Bruno, but it's like the writers have an order to make sure he says he's rich once an episode. I promise to remember that element of his backstory if they promise to write it in a bit less clunkily when they must. I mean, really, who talks like that? For a few minutes, I thought that's where they were going in the opening scene. it was just something about the style of the scene and the way Benson's monologue seemed to be dancing around the occasion. I don't follow casting news and thought they were going for a sudden shocking retirement, with one last case for the road. It feels like it's coming sooner or later - but hopefully later, with the rest of the cast seeming so much in flux.
  19. Speaking of the "super is a pedophile" angle, I thought those photos of him with the victim looked badly photoshopped or something. For a second I thought it was going to come out that the defense attorney had shopped them herself, which would have been really silly. In reality, maybe the props people just didn't want to put much effort into something we would see so fleetingly. Did anyone else think they looked funny or is it just me?
  20. Did anyone else think the "I want to meet my big brother from online in person!" teaser was pointing toward Noah being groomed? I was so relieved the show didn't go down that path that the rest of it was almost tolerable.
  21. I wouldn't mind some kind of reform to the rules about when and how self-correction is allowed. I like Ken very much, but he has a habit of saying "nnnnnn...?" while waiting for the judge in his ear, in such a way that he might as well say "ooooh, so close, try that again." They can't anticipate every possible such situation, and perhaps they do not want the host making these calls unilaterally, but I think they could be a little crisper at times, and it would be a good thing.
  22. Even though I know a game show is not principally a social occasion, I think I do respond more warmly when a contestant seems to be applauding for the others, getting into their stories, etc. I have noticed that Cris doesn't do these things, although I try not to hold it against him because I think he just gets "in the zone" to play. And I certainly wouldn't have it any other way than him doing his best. I do think I know what you mean, even if it doesn't map exactly to playing on TV. I was at a party recently with one person taking a board game far more seriously than the others, and it was terribly awkward. He repeated his running tally of the score more than necessary, and at one point made to get up from the table and call someone who had just entered the bathroom back to take their turn. That he just seemed to be on a different page made it uncomfortable. Cris hasn't done anything like that, but because a highly successful J! contestant is able to stop others from taking a turn, I think it can lead to a similar, and maybe unconscious, feeling that one is playing a different game from the others.
  23. I thought I'd sweep B"oo"ze too - but I've never heard of Boodles either. I always order well drinks and don't keep liquor at home, or maybe I might have run across it. Damn this moderation!
  24. I won't forget seeing an iPod in a museum a few years ago! I am one who uses my smartphone for mobile music, but I still think it's too bad Apple has discontinued it. I know a few who swear by theirs. One doesn't want to have her expensive phone out while she's on transit etc. Another finds it more convenient to use the smaller and lighter iPod when he's out running. It doesn't sound like those who are in the market for a simple MP3 player want big updates, so I would've thought this product could be kept in the lineup without much expense even if it is not as popular as it was. Interesting to read various thoughts about Cris. For me, there's nothing objectionable about him, but I haven't really been moved to root hard for him either. I tend to connect with more outgoing, but not necessarily animated or effusive, personalities. In the past, I might have been dazzled by his high level performance in its own right, but somehow right now it feels like more of the same. So I can go either way - in a tighter game, I'm excited to see the challengers catch up, but if he's way ahead, I want him to go wayyyyy ahead. Overall, as long as he can keep it up, good for him, in my eyes.
  25. I am so grateful that I wasn’t up there onstage to say, totally straightfacedly, that Boss Tweed was in the Dukes of Hazzard. Please respect my wish for privacy at this difficult time.
