S22.E10:Top 24 to 20 Top 20 to 14 (2 part)
sempervivum replied to sempervivum's topic in American Idol
Top 20 to 14: I'll predict now that barring any disasters, it'll be Triston/Mia/Will (or Abi) with Triston winning. I guess we're steering clear of the real awkward situation here, huh? Still, seemed very tone deaf of TPTB to end up with Triston vs. Roman, as if anybody (including Triston and Roman) thought Triston would be leaving. The wildcards seemed transparently designed to even things up, although it also means that almost certainly, 1 or more of those picks will leave next week. Jordan over any of the gospel guys and Ajii, including platinum ticket Odell-uh, OK Katy. Coal Miner's Granddaughter in her humble po' folks costume 🙄 At least we got rid of Kennedy and Mackenzie. ('Just an opinion', as Simon used to say) -
3 hour show takes the top 24 down to top 20

The only role Kristen Wiig ever played on SNL that made me laugh was the Target check-out lady. So the new Target ad with her getting ready for work, and Prince's 'Baby I'm a Star' playing in the background makes me smile.

At least she didn't have kids. Amazing that someone could be so stubbornly self-deluding that she thought losing 12 lbs. in a year was pretty good.

Second night generally stronger, no? First night- Ian Tongi looks even bigger than last year, sounds the same. Abi and Will, followed by Quintavious, were my faves. Second night- Tristan should have waited another year or two. Right now, all I can think of with him is season 10 Scotty McCreery with the constant judge yelps of 'He's only 16!' Another baby face with an old man voice-although it worked out pretty well for Scotty. And Jack Blocker's mouth contortions and (to me) lackluster vocals are so Phillip Phillips (season 11). Not as sweaty or handsome, though. Would Emmy/Loretta's granddaughter be here if not for her pedigree? Doubt it, she's not very distinctive; right now, I just think 'Oh, yeah, she's the trembly one'. KBlocks- oof. I've liked her, but that was terrible. She actually reminded me of Fantasia's crazy performance of 'Bore Me' that she did on Idol back in 2008 or so.

S10.E10: Viewers Like You
sempervivum replied to shapeshifter's topic in Finding Your Roots With Henry Louis Gates Jr.
I find that I'm more interested in 'what my ancestors did' than in just who they were. None of the revealed ancestors were known to have done anything special, other than 'fooled around with a neighbor' and 'beat up his wife'. But we can't all be descended from Charlemagne, I guess.😉 -
Yes, I kept expecting some disaster- actually sort of thought the husband was going to leave her. But nope Despite some of the usual markers of failure (big tattoo, weird clothing, no teeth,), Rose was self aware and sincere. Her family was supportive and affectionate. I was amazed when the son in law actually checked water, oil, brakes, etc., on the vehicle before they embarked on the trip. Loved the (skinny) grandkids helping her stick to her exercise regimen. Daughter in law seriously needs to get with the program Rose is following, though. Based on her scanty hair and luxuriant goatee, she most likely has PCOS, and should be working on her own health.

Yeah, even if it's all just junk from Temu, why aren't you saving your money instead for a security deposit on an apartment? It's going to be a close call between Odell, Quintavious and Roman for the first public vote, and this could make a negative impression.

I thought the second showstopper episode was better than the first. Still not dying to see more of anybody, though. Also can't really rejoice or regret what happens to people I've only heard 1 or 2 (in some cases, 0) times before. I appreciated the actual 'performers' like KBlocks and Odell just as a relief from the lowkey same-i-ness of so many of these folks.

Say What?: Commercials That Made Us Scratch Our Heads
sempervivum replied to Lola16's topic in Commercials
Pepper bras for small boobs: they show a couple of models wearing bras that are too big, and exclaim in outrage that there are gaps! This would be like showing models in panties that are too tight and claiming they're bulging over the waistband because the manufacturer is making them 'wrong'. Why don't these folks just try a different size/style until they find one that fits? More power to them for trying this approach for sales (although a quick Google reveals MANY 'small boob bra' companies out there), it just doesn't make much sense to me (side note: I am a 34B with padding). -
So returning to the good old TwoP days, here's my conspiracy theory: the show really wants another female winner. Julia (the obvious candidate) is given a prime spot to sing, shows up looking schlubby with messy pulled-back hair, no makeup, and frumpy oversized clothing. She delivers a stellar song, plus she has a sob story background. She'll get a makeover, and turn out to have a cute figure. I also predict that the males who get to top 24 will either have good voices or looks, not both. (I'm guessing neither Spencer nor Isaiah from tonight in particular will advance). I have to note, though, that I barely remember anybody from the previous shows this season. Exception: Keegan's (the roller skater) voice actually reminded me a bit of Adam Lambert.

Yes, bless them for marshalling the specialists and hospital to give her that really amazing result. Re. pickleball contest: the cringe-est part was Nassif's hunched, stubby little self groping his grand daughter wife's behind. At least Dubrow looks age and fitness-appropriate with Heather.

Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage
sempervivum replied to Maverick's topic in Commercials
This is an older one but it's still running and it still gets BIG eyerolls from me: the Moen faucet ad with the woman telling the faucet to 'fill Ruby's bottle'. I used to think this was maybe her baby's bottle, although why you'd be giving a baby tap water I don't know. But apparently it's HER bottle. This is so pretentious, lazy and just plain dumb. -
I'm giving Delana a few points for not being covered in tattoos, no blue hair or face piercing, wigs, false lashes or nails. Surprised that she seems to be succeeding, as she came across as one of the typical victim personalities with a zillion excuses. Would be interested in a follow-up show. I have my doubts.

The Ragu 'scandal' aside, I have to say that I can't think of a single singer I've seen so far (FOUR auditions' worth) who I really look forward to seeing/hearing again. Quintavious was really good, but has AI ever had a season when there wasn't at least one really good church singer? Spoiler: they never win. Also, I'd accept some of the contestant sob/back stories if TPTB would stop shoe-horning supposedly cute judge antics into the shows.

Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage
sempervivum replied to Maverick's topic in Commercials
And it annoys me that 6 months from now, some law firm will be soliciting people who were 'harmed' by one of these miracle cures. I will say, though, that if I had one of these conditions, I'd be happy to know there was some hope of alleviation/cure. -
I bailed after William pulled out Excuse Number Three (or was it Four?): the family thought I was to blame for grandma's death. Oookay. While it was clearly mostly on him, his mom/enabler bears a LOT of responsibility. Very glad to see Dr. Now is continuing his recent 'take no prisoners' approach.

Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage

I've decided that I hate the new Jardiance ad even worse than the first one. I think it's the lead actress; she comes across phony/ actress-y. The OG came across as genuinely happy, even though she over-acted, if that makes any sense. As annoying as the original 'plot' (dances, tries on new dress, dances) was, the new one with the 'funny' scenes (mixed-up lunch orders, dumb guy with moobs needs help with printer) are totally pointless. And we still have to listen to that song. -
S49.E13: Sydney Sweeney / Kacey Musgraves
sempervivum replied to Galileo908's topic in Saturday Night Live
Speaking of 'out of touch', nobody found Kacey M. performing barefoot in what appeared to be a tattered denim patchwork bathrobe odd? I like her, but there was some cognitive dissonance with that first 'slice of reality' song being sung by someone with a frozen face and over-filled lips? -
I think last night's episode 'You're so Vein' was new, right? I missed the first half of it, which apparently had something to do with a big boob addict being afraid her implants were impinging on a vein, or something (they weren't, so of course now she's planning on getting even more gigantic ones). Guy who got a costly new nose which he then ruined by smoking, what can you say? Nassif was pissed. The arms of the nurse with the skin removal scars turned out great. Could her original surgeon have been Dr. Now? His skin removals always look so crude and ugly.

The graphics showed packaged items. But I'm sure they'll get around to flat irons eventually. -
Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage

In the world of litigation, I just saw an ad soliciting customers of hair-straightening products who claim to have suffered injury/gotten medical conditions as a result of their use. Where will it end?? -
I tried to like this show, really I did. I enjoyed the acting and it was lovely to look at, but ultimately, It was a garbled mess, for me. I lost track of what all the acronyms meant, I still don't know why everybody wanted the kid, I don't know why the English spy lady ran over the guy who was supposed to be her son, I don't know why we saw all the flashbacks about Jean Pierre's past, don't get the Vatican sending a mad monk to kill the nuns, didn't think Teresa looked 14, didn't believe all these warring factions would do the old 'gather in the library while Miss Marple explains it all'. Alfre Woodard (who I love) showing up was very shark-jumpy.

That poor girl who got a huge whole-body infection just from some kind of vitamin(?) injection administered by a quack- her scarring reminded me of old photos of smallpox victims. I appreciated her willingness to accept responsibility, her fighting sprit/courage, and her calm, determined approach. I hope they can help her surgically at some point. The woman with the cleft nose also had a great attitude. Hope this gives her the push she needs to do something about that 50 BMI. Even the 'freak of the week' Tyler was pretty sympathetic. He's rejecting that weirdo Justin's Ken Doll fixation, and is actually planning to go to school to become a nurse. I have to admit, Dubrow has great arms.
