  1. I appreciate that TV One has been a good syndication home for the show for over 15 years (with only a brief time when they weren't showing it), but they're getting on my nerves a little. First they have dumped it from the longtime morning airings in favor of their murder shows (I know they're popular, but does everyone watch them at the crack of dawn?). This has caused VH-1 to decide to pick up the slack by moving LS from afternoon to morning, leaving me with few times where I can see it (I can watch my purchased episodes, but I liked just background viewing late at night too). But anyway, TV One only airs the show in marathons on Tuesday nights or some weekends. Tonight they were airing mid to late season 4 episodes, but suddenly skip the last four of the season to go to season 5. Because that's what everyone really wants, to get to season 5 as quickly as possible! Some episodes are good, but this is weird, unless they're just really big Tripp fans at the channel.
  2. It was sad toward the end when Candi Staton was talking about the partner she always wanted to have. However, considering everything she kept going through every time, I was kind of relieved that she hasn't gotten married for a fifth time. I hope that, as they said, she spends a lot of time with children and grandchildren. I didn't know she had as many hits as she did because the only one I had heard besides "Young Hearts Run Free" was "Victim." ETA: She apparently DID have another (terrible) marriage, to a baseball player. And a sixth marriage that is listed as current, but it didn't seem like it from the way she was talking at the end.
  3. I see this ad quite a bit, but it makes me laugh, especially when they translate the meow to French.
  4. This is in the wrong forum. I thought I was in Favorite Commercials. (I can't delete the video.) But one that does fit this topic is for the Gametime app for buying discounted event tickets. They had one for a while that was just a nice, straight-forward ad explaining that you could save money; but now they are not only running the one where a woman taunts a stranger about how she spent less than him, but there is a new one where a guy comments on the guy next to him buying a lot of snacks and is impressed. Guy With Snacks then explains that he saved a lot with the Gametime app and taunts, "I guess I'm just a better fan than you." Instead of getting angry over what a jerk this guy is, the other man is shamed and says he needs the app. I do not find this behavior funny like the ad creators seem to think it is. And in the unlikely event I ever get to go to another game, I'm afraid I'll get stuck with the real-life version of these people!
  5. The episode isn't on until April 7 because they're showing NASCAR in primetime next week.
  6. The high school where Footloose was filmed is going to be demolished due to the construction of a new school, and Kevin Bacon has accepted the students' invitation to attend the final prom. https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/kevin-bacon-attend-prom-high-143327766.html
  7. I guess it shouldn't be surpising they would pull that when it took so long for him to even know what her name was, but it is still very annoying. When Vi was warning Robyn that if you put things off for too long, it may never happen or something like that, I changed it to, "If you put things off for too long, the show might get cancelled." (Not that this would happen because of them not being together, but that the show could get dropped for business reasons even with good ratings and then nothing would ever happen between them!) A friend who is a fan of Latifah but has never watched the show occasionally asks me what is going on in the show, and even she is like, "They'll probably never get together."
  8. Bad Habits - Maxwell Bad Habits - Ed Sheeran Bad Habits - Usher (There's also "Bad Habit" by Steve Lacy, and I always get confused and think that one has the "s" at the end and the Usher one doesn't.)
  9. I'm cynically inclined to believe that the whole thing with Alyssa Raghu was planned; but if not, she seemed to blindside the judges by asking them to put her through to Hollywood when they thought she was just showing off the growth in her voice. I don't know if they still have rules about who can or can't appear again (aside from when they brought people back from the COVID at-home season); but if they do, she seemed to be banking that she could get the judges to back her to circumvent the rules. Alyssa has a good voice, but she's already been to at least top 24 twice and top 8 once (and didn't have any sort of emergency that prevented her from competing or anything, she was just eliminated), so I agree with Katy that she wouldn't win which would seem to make it a pointless exercise. Katy put her through to top 10 as a Wild Card in season 17 after she sang Katy's song, so it's not like she doesn't like her. If anything, this episode might make Alyssa less popular than she was. I don't mind too much when they are on the fence and put someone with an emotional backstory through, as they can always cut them more easily in Hollywood when there are many more contestants on the stage. I don't mind them getting a free trip to Hollywood that I don't have to pay for. I do wish that 95 percent of the audition episodes content weren't these stories though. When one of the episodes was about to start, the ABC voiceover even called Idol "the most insipring show on TV." Oh well. Only one audition episode to go!
  10. There was a mini LS reunion on the NAACP Image Awards as presenter/nominee (for American Fiction) Erika Alexander appeared onstage with host/nominee (for The Equalizer) Queen Latifah. She surprised Latifah with an early birthday cake and then the crowd serenaded her with Stevie Wonder's "Happy Birthday." Latifah was clearly moved and they both complimented each other quite a bit.
  11. Fantasia won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture for "The Color Purple." She was also nominated for Entertainer of the Year, and I believe earlier in the year she was a Golden Globe nominee. One thing that seemed odd is that Jennifer Hudson's show won the Image Award for Outstanding Talk Show, even though she wasn't among the nominees for host.
  12. Because Bobby Caldwell had died nearly a year before the episode aired, I was expecting it to feature some of the people interviewed reflecting on his death or his life as a whole (the latter of which they sort of did anyway because it was clear he couldn't perform or record again). I was surprised that they just tacked on a "he died" message at the end like they do when one of the interview subjects has died, not the person being profiled. But I guess they had completed the episode within the few months between the interview of Bobby and his death and it would have been too difficult to revise things. I remember that Vesta Williams had been interviewed in her episode before her (unexpected) death, but it's been so long since I saw that one that I can't remember if they commented on her death more than what was done with the Bobby Caldwell episode. In the "Cold Chillin'" episode, the manager guy basically admits he ripped everyone off, but of course it's their fault because they didn't take their contracts to a lawyer. They should have had someone look at it, but most of the "bad manager" types in the episodes at least try to cover up their behavior a little. Then he added that Big Daddy Kane and Biz Markie didn't complain because they were the only ones selling records and did make money. (I'm surprised they didn't have BDK comment on this although he was interviewed. I don't remember from his episode if he had problems with management.)
  13. I was getting tired of seeing ads for Vabysmo (prescription treatment for wet age-related macular degeneration) practically every break for hours on MLB Network. It's not a particuarly annoying ad on its own, it's just that any ad can wear on me after seeing it 20+ times in a day. However, for most of today, they instead started showing an ad about Peyronie's Disease that often. I was very happy when they switched back to Vabysmo during the replayed game that is on now!
  14. Ruben is scheduled to both be interviewed and perform on The Kelly Clarkson Show on Friday. I also saw HunterGirl listed for a musical performance on next Monday's episode.
  15. I'd forgotten about this scene! Later (the last season), Steve made a few appearances as Fran's father, Morty, who had been mentioned frequently but hadn't been shown to that point. This didn't really fit with the descriptions that had been given of Morty as a slobbish homebody, but he did a nice job (and naturally sang a couple of times, including in the finale).
  16. As ridiculous as it was when they had the animated Lucky Charms mascot running around the set (maybe even during an audition?), I was grateful that it was just added later and that they didn't have the judges be aware of this somehow, because the last thing needed would have been Katy playing along to make it even more "hilarious." I hope I didn't jinx it so that she'll pop up in her own leprechaun outfit in the next episode on St. Patrick's Day.
  17. Debra Byrd, the vocal coach for the first 10 seasons, has passed away at the age of 72. https://deadline.com/2024/03/debra-byrd-dead-american-idol-the-voice-vocal-coach-was-72-obituary-1235848285/
  18. The Pillsbury Doughboy's voice sounds really weird in their latest commercial. It doesn't seem as high-pitched as it has normally been. After seeing the Billy Mays commercial (Mighty Mendit) about a hundred times in the last week on a couple of channels, I think that they have just dredged up an old ad and are showing it unchanged (unless they have the voiceover guy say a different price this many years later). The part where they list the price and address and everything on the screen is rather blurry with bars on the side like it was made before there were HD TVs. It is very strange, but when I had Googled Mays to see when he died, the main thing that came up besides his obituary were fairly recent articles about what a great spokesman he had been. I guess this inspired someone to bring him and this ad back from the dead.
  19. I think Robyn even said something to Dante like "I liked it better when you didn't have a captain." There is plenty of drama without having to have a captain getting in the way. The show already had enough of that (Robyn pursued by police) in the past and it had been resolved when she saved the district attorney, so it's kind of like going backwards. I guess they just felt like they needed another character.
  20. The next new episode is March 17, then there's probably one on March 31 (unless they have even fewer than 10 episodes or they're going to double up on one of the dates later, which I guess is possible).
  21. The show returns Monday, June 3. It doesn't say whether these are still celebrity episodes or if they will have regular people as contestants.
  22. "Put Your Records On" by Corinne Bailey Rae starts with a Bob Marley reference that went over my head until tonight: "Three little birds sat on my window. And they told me I don't need to worry." It wasn't until "Three Little Birds" was featured on Beat Shazam that I learned what the title was (I mostly knew just the chorus), but that was awhile ago and I still hadn't put it together.
  23. Ever since OneRepublic's "I Ain't Worried" came out a couple years ago (especially when it was getting a lot of airplay), a friend would complain that she didn't like the part that goes, "1999, Pete Rose" because she doesn't like Rose. I heard the line the same way and couldn't figure out what the group was singing about. If they had said "1989" then it could have been some statement about when he was banned from baseball. I heard the song again recently and decided to Google it to see if it were explained or if it was just supposed to be some random, free association thing. It turns out they are saying, "1999, heroes." I still don't really know what they mean, but my friend probably won't believe this is the actual lyric.
  24. I keep seeing ads for various products being pitched by Billy Mays...who died in 2009. I don't know if it's just old footage or they're using AI or something, but it definitely creeps me out!
