Yes he was Danny’s boss, but he was a Sargent at that time.  He was promoted to Lieutenant after he transferred to Frank’s team.  The title that Frank originally wanted him to have cannot be given to him because he is not a Captain ( according to the internet just now)- so I was incorrect about the needing to be a Lieutenant statement in my earlier post.

Interesting. It seemed odd to me that Danny (a Homicide Detective) would report to a Sargent. I figured he'd at least report to a Lieutenant or a Captain. That seems to be the case for pretty much any other police procedural show I've ever watched.  :)

Garrett has always been a civilian.  Baker is still referred to as Detective.  Gormley has  a special title because he was only a Sargent when Frank transferred him up there and needed to be a Lieutenant for an equal transfer ( or something like that).   They are still active officers  and could transfer out to a precinct if they wished.

I thought Gormley was a higher rank than that. Didn't Danny report to him at one point back at the beginning of the series?

My understanding was that the mayor's security detail is mostly active duty NYPD officers. Frank made it sound Jamie being transfered to that detail was like any other routine transfer from one assignment to another. Later in the episode they made it seem as though Jamie would be leaving the NYPD for a political position. I am confused and wonder if I missed a line or something. Thanks to anyone who can help explain it to me.

I liked the storyline that Luis and Eddie had, and the way they involved Henry. I loved the line about Regans are goody-goodys or hot-heads because he's kind of right.

You're not alone in your confusion. That's what it sounded like to me as well.

  4. I was hoping that when Dan got clotheslined by that branch, that would be the end of the race. I wanted to slap Cordell for pushing Dan to finish it. So now, we have Dan pulling a douchebag move, leaving Walker laying there in the dirt when his saddle (stirrup?) breaks. The Walkers can absolutely claim cheating. I hope we get to see that in the next episode.

And how the hell did they get any blood/dna evidence off that lantern? I'm pretty sure anything would've been destroyed in the fire. That lanterned was completely blackened and crispy.

Denise had absolutely no right to try and question Augie (a minor) without a guardian being present. Yes, Augie was willing and Cordell wasn't picking up his phone but that's no excuse. As a District Attorney, she would know that anything he said might end up getting thrown out as inadmissible as a result.

  5. This episode was just kind of ... there. Nothing about it that made it stand out. Just a random filler episode. The actors and the writers are just phoning it in at this point.

I wanted to smack Kilbride. Demanding that Agent Namazi come up with a plan all by herself and then slinking back to his office to "make phone calls". Wanker.

The stars on the ceiling at the end were kind of cute, tho.

I loved it too. When Jamie smiled, at least I think he did, he seemed to feel the imaginary mantle of power being transferred to him. I so agree that he would be great at it. Intelligent, compassionate, fair, no chip on his shoulder, able to follow rules, able to work with authority figures and all kinds of people.

    Me too. *raises hand*

I've said it before but I really hope that the final scene of the entire series is us seeing a MUCH older Jamie sitting behind the big desk at 1PP as a young police officer comes in, salutes, and says "Hi Grandpa." :)

  7. I feel like a lot happened in this episode. I wasn't originally a fan of Walker and Geri together but it's growing on me. I actually think they're kind of cute now. And yes, EVERYONE knows without them having to say a word.

Despite Stella telling her dad that she's happy he's putting himself out there again, I saw her face during his walk of shame. I wouldn't be surprised if she gets pissy about it in the future.

Speaking of Stella, August needs to just come out and tell her that Colton likes her. Or Colton himself. She's not a mind reader and she's obviously not very preceptive. I don't blame her in this situation because I used to be absolutely terrible at picking up on these kinds of hints myself. Totally oblivious.

I really don't like any of the Davidsons. The husband is an ass and now there's a random baby that was given up for adoption?

    The horserace should be interesting.

    The lantern scene was awkward.

  8. I was always one of the people who was emphatic about not wanting Walker and Geri hook up but ... I'm kinda feelin' it now?

The best thing is this episode was the most beautifully written scene I’ve seen on TV. When Sam Elliot’s character sits down and talks about loss with Elsa…it took my breath away. Both me and Mr Redcookie cried….I sobbed. Just stunning work.

Agreed. I've said it before but Sam Elliott is killing it in this show and absolutely deserves an Emmy.

The reminded me of another scene, also written by Taylor Sheridan. The one in Wind River where Jeremy Renner's character (who lost his daughter a number of years ago) tells his friend (who had just lost his own daughter) to "take the pain". Those of you who have seen Wind River know the one I'm talking about. Such an amazing scene. This one with Shea and Elsa gave me the exact same feels.

So it looks like there won't be a baby Ennis running around. This makes me sad.

There were a couple of references by patrol officers to some award or citation that Jamie wanted the precinct to get, but they were quick mentions during their griping sessions.

I could've sworn Jamie's captain griped at him about how now that he knew Jamie was prepping for the lieutenant's exam, it wasn't surprising that Jamie would dig up something like this and want to implement it.

Yes, they should be in different precincts, or he should not be her direct supervisor.

IIRC, they were on separate shifts so that he wasn't her supervisor, but it looks like the writers aren't bothering with that anymore.

Ah, this is a very good possibility.  I know that Tim and Faith are both in their early or mid 50s, but I've been trying to figure out how old the characters are on this show.  They have an 18 year old daughter and I think people had kids earlier back then, but surely the show can't be passing them off as 40, they look older than that.  Maybe they are 45?  I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility that Spencer in the "Yellowstone" appearance is Margaret's child.

But I could easily see that he could end up being Elsa's child.  Her lover dies, she has the baby but they raise the baby as James and Margaret's child to avoid scandal.

I think we have been assuming all along that Kevin Costner John is the son of the John in this show.  I am now wondering if he is descended from Spencer.  And If Spencer is Elsa's child, that would make Elsa to be Beth's great-great-grandmother (I think I have the number of greats correct).  I definitely saw a Beth streak in Elsa when Elsa pulled out her revolver and shot Ennis' killer multiple times.

I've been thinking this from the first episode of the show. I couldn't figure out why they were focusing so much on Elsa (having her narrate, etc) when it appeared to me that the modern day Duttons were descended from her little brother. After all, they still carried the Dutton name and the only way that would normally happen is through the male line marrying and the bride taking the husband's name. Now it all makes much more sense.

Yeah, but this wink-wink about a discount, is that any less strong-armed? what frank should have said was, let's organize something and fund it, so it's all above-board.  i love Regina, but it feels like her talents were left wanting here.  Seems to me a convoluted story line with a not-great resolution.

    Fair point. Agreed.

  13. Sam Elliott is absolutely killing it in this series. If he isn't nominated for an Emmy, then there is no justice in this world.

Damn you, Ennis (and Elsa), for making me cry.

Very lame, and why would Det. Danny ever think of picking up a tab for a celeb? Also, that whole scene with the birthday dinner for Baez and the conversation about Buffet was equally lame.

Exactly. Jimmy Buffett is a millionaire. He doesn't need anyone to pick up his tab.

  15. Episode summary:

    Quote

Danny pursues a con artist pretending to be the legendary singer Jimmy Buffett; Frank investigates an impressive police captain who is using her badge to get free wares from local stores.

I'm getting tired of all the stunt casting. Last week it was Lyle Lovett and this week it's Jimmy Buffett. The story was lame and really didn't need to be there.

The best thing about Erin's story was Garrett. I loved it when he said that Frank doesn't play politics. That was what he had Garrett for.

They really need for Eddie and Jamie to be in different precincts. I don't always like Eddie but this week I felt bad for her. She was put in a very difficult spot.

Happy to see that Jamie is looking to become a lieutenant.

Once again, Frank made the right call. The captain's heart is definitely in the right place but she can't use her uniform to get free stuff, even if it's for a worthy cause.

The dinner conversation about first concerts was cute. (My first concert was U2, The Unforgettable Fire tour - 1985.)

  16. I got serious Sam & Dean vibes from Cordy and Liam this week.

Augie should have kept his mouth shut about finding the lantern. No good can come from blabbing about that.

Surprised to find out that what's his name is adopted.

I liked the flash back with Emily and Stella as well as Walker spending time with his daughter. It looks as though they're using some of Gen Padalecki's's actual history as Emily's. Gen played soccer as a kid (Mia Hamm was her idol) and she is of Italian ancestry (bocce).

I'd like it if we eventually see Emily's mom: the mysterious Granny Nancy.

Bunch of hipsters on vespa speeder bikes.

I am going to start referring to them as the Power Rangers because of the colors of their speeder bikes.

They looked like something out of a cheap movie about a post apocalyptic world, circa 1984.

  18. Add me to the list of people who assumed that Rosa was legally an adult. She doesn't look anywhere near young enough to need a guardian assigned to her. It never even crossed my mind.

Unless they really meant sponsor and simply used the wrong word?

  19. The pioneers appear to be a bit of mishmash. Not just German peasants but Romani (Gypsies) and the man who was told to leave his piano behind sounded like he was speaking Yiddish so maybe Jews as well? All people who were discriminated against.

Easily the best episode of the season for me - I had chills at times.

The cell phone scenes with Mike and his mother were so well acted. I question the role of momma McLusky but those scenes were fantastic. She didn't see the bigger picture of trying to stop info from getting into the prison but Mike was on that right away.

"I'm an advocate for inmates. Someone's already informed on them, if they're in there, so I don't see a conflict?" Love Sassy Mike.

"Those assholes serve fucking warrants for wire fraud. They've never been shot at a day in their lives - I got shot at YESTERDAY" Robert is so good. He loves his job, and he's good at it. I just didn't understand why they wouldn't bring Ian and Kyle back out the way they went in? Kyle in particular was a liability.

How was Ed not dead before being strung up, honestly. The inmates hated him the most.

The rumour is that season two is a go, so we shall see. Obviously with Milo sneaking out there will be more to mine with that storyline, plus those two cops know Mike was involved in the shooting.

I love Robert as well. He is easily one of my favorite characters. Agree they should've had a couple of guys take Kyle and Ian out rather than drag them with them, deeper into the prison. Really glad that Kyle made it out. If he hadn't, I'm sure Momma McCluskey would've blamed Mike. I'm assuming we'll see him dealing with PTSD next season. Happy to hear there will be a next season.

Sorry to see the end of Ed. I like the actor playing him.

  21. In my head, I know that the journey was hard for the pioneers, Unbelievably so. We all know that. But I feel like this is the first time it's ever accurately been shown on television just how truly difficult (and dangerous) it was. My imagination didn't even come close, and they haven't even left Texas yet.

Cutting the river crossing with Elsa's playing was well done. Loved Ennis' comment "Don't you know any happy ones?" :)

  22. Frank's reasoning on the punishment handed down is sound. The fact that the mayor flip-flopped on his position depending on which way the wind blows is not surprising, but it does piss me off.

I also agree with what Jamie did. No one is above the law. If he pushes it up the chain of command and they choose not to do anything, that's on them. But he felt he would be remiss by remaining silent. He really is like his dad.
