  1. i gotta assume this is more producer fuckery because a comment like that is 99.99% foreshadowing for the end of the episode
  2. As usual my hubby doesn't want to hear me talk about this show (he is usually a good sport and will at least half-heartedly watch it with me lol) so I have to come here for the snark! She's giving me Kathryn Hahn vibes and that makes me immediately like her (deserved or not!) Honestly I felt the same way, he's a little too show-offy for my tastes. And when he came out and goes "HELLO YOU BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE" to the judges I just rolled my eyes extra hard. But at least he seems to be a decent baker. I think the right person went home. She seemed super nice and I would've loved to see more of her but when she goes "My cake is too bitter!" and her solution was to add MORE of the ingredient that was making it bitter, in BIG OL' JUICY CHUNKS, welp, I question that thought process.
  3. This is the impression I got as well... there was a moment when Jesse made one of his dumb jokes and Sherrod just kinda stood there and was like "..." before reacting as if it wasn't a joke. I just get the feeling that he doesn't make "good tv" in the eyes of the production team
  4. When we visited Tokyo a few years back, Mt Blanc desserts were EVERYWHERE. Which is a shame because they looked so enticing but I also don't care for chestnuts :) Every year for the past decade or so my Aunt would make roasted chestnuts and every year nobody would touch them and every year she'd say "I spent all morning roasting these and nobody wants them?!" lol it's tradition! ETA: this episode must've been a record for the number of times people said the word "whimsical." the challenge was poorly thought out. it might've been more interesting to pipe a design that was revealed or enhanced through the smushing process, but maybe that's too complicated. What we ended up with was "ok, here's a generic christmas design, but worse."
  5. I'm bored at work today so here's my word-vomit after watching the finale: Ryan's cake looked really amateurish and we know he's capable of way more than that... but he's a pastry chef, right? He should absolutely have known better than to attempt to use boxed egg whites for a chiffon cake which is so heavily dependent on a perfect meringue. I was vaguely annoyed by James all season and I don't quite know why. His cake looked ok but I feel like his artistic taste level is all over the map. Some of his ideas are fully WTF (but of course that's entirely subjective) and the way he kept sorta trash-talking Ryan and Hollie was off-putting even if it was intended to be all in fun. I agree with the poster(s) above that I think Hollie is a softie and maybe had some confidence issues that she chose to address externally (I could do without all the mugging for the camera but hey that's reality TV for ya...) I have a bunch of tattoos and most of them are dumb but I find it empowering in an odd way that I'm sure many folks wouldn't understand.
  6. I personally don't mind the gore if it's done well, which hasn't necessarily been the case this season... I know you're not supposed to talk about other shows here but I think Halloween Cookie Challenge has been way more inclusive in terms of theme than this show-- the only gore is whatever the mean plastic surgeons did to poor Rosanna's face (sorry)
  7. I have to assume this is producer meddling? Maybe I'm being too generous but I can't imagine ANY human being actually talking like this, but the producers "encouraged" them to lean into the tech bro nonsense for the sake of the show. Which I wish they wouldn't do, no one comes to this show for wacky characters (I don't need ukulele chick either, tbh)
  8. Yeah, yet again after seeing the results of both challenges I'm kinda like... 🤐 I'm convinced they keep the "good" bakers for Holiday Baking Championship, but it does make this show feel a little strange especially when many of the contestants are allegedly professional bakers. I can totally appreciate the fact that time constraints and stupid twists contribute to a lesser final product, but man some of these just looked like a mound of goo that was airbrushed into oblivion.
  9. Is it just me or were most of the cakes ugly as all get out tonight? The only one I really thought looked "professional" was Ryan's so I was glad that he at least made it to the top. James is a hometown boy so I should be rooting for him but for whatever reason he rubs me the wrong way. It seemed so performative to be like "UBE! PANDAN! LOOK AT ME AND MY EXOTIC FILIPINO FLAVORS!" but hey it's probably just me. Phoebe seemed like a cool person but the thought of a clove-heavy doughnut sounds so nauseating... and I've eaten (heck, I've probably made) pumpkin cake that is dense and super stodgy and it ain't pretty. Coupled with what looked like an equally heavy cream cheese frosting, I can imagine it was like eating pumpkin spice wallpaper paste.
  10. I'm so happy Amber and Yass won! I am not an especially emotional person but their reaction and speech after being named the winning team totally got me a little misty 🥲
  11. when exactly did this show turn into a bunch of wannabe writers/comedians/actors just trying to get screentime? i know it's been heading in that direction for a while but i couldn't even finish the first episode because of so many "CONTENT CREATORS" who seem to be trying to workshop their crappy material on a cooking show. this is high cringe and i think i might finally be out!
  12. I actually agree that Alyssa's cake was the best looking of the three (and a pox upon Duff for his ridiculous comment about Zoe's looking more like a float... Alyssa's practically WAS a float!) But I think the judge's comment was more that Yohann had multiple shades of blue and none of them matched. His cake looked a little sloppy (those drips! ugh!) and not up to his usual standards; maybe not having access to the star cutter really threw him off. I think Alyssa tried to account for the bacon texture by candying it, but when she's chopping it up you can see it's not really candied in any meaningful way... it looked more like she sprinkled some brown sugar on it and threw it in the oven for 5 minutes. Actually candied bacon would be great in a cake!
  13. All of the clips from old skool Project Runway made me really miss Michael Kors. I think at the time everyone thought he was incredibly bitchy but he had some CLASSIC one liners!
  14. I've been thinking that too although this episode I totally guessed Basque cheesecake and I was so darn proud of myself, lol I wonder how it works... like the contestants guessed "blackened cheesecake," but since they seemed kinda unfamiliar with it, how did they come up with a recipe? Basque cheesecakes are fairly different than a normal cheesecake so I don't think I could've come up with a reasonable recipe off the top of my head. Joel is a good host and I love his interaction with the contestants, but when he's just standing there reading rules or making announcements he is so stiff with his arms absolutely pinned to his sides! (it's only noteworthy to me because I've gone through so many comms classes and received the same feedback myself!)
  15. I'm glad this show is back AND I'm glad it's mostly about desserts... there are plenty of other shows that focus on savory stuff, so I appreciate something a little different. Chopped and Top Chef both tried desserts-centric shows and both ultimately failed so I'll take my wins where I can get 'em :)
  16. Always have a Plan B, especially when you're attempting something so unusual! There's gotta be like the 10 Commandments of going on a cooking/baking competition show... straight-up cooking skill is important, sure, but it's just as important to be flexible and understand the constraints of the specific challenge. I don't know how many times I've seen contestants cook like a 6" deep cake in a 45 minute challenge and think to myself... welp, GOOD LUCK!
  17. I always enjoy the finales for the spectacle if nothing else. I'm anti-Nutsa from way back but I wonder how someone like Kylie Minogue feels about having to go on AI and duet with a nobody in order to pimp her new album. ANYWAY. I was perfectly happy with Iam's win. The best singer rarely wins AI so at least we got someone a little different who seems like a good kid.
  18. I'd have to go back and watch it again but did he serve it as a macaron ice cream sandwich? noticing how much they spread and the lack of feet I would've just called it a dacquoise and hoped to slip it past the judges :p
  19. Disney week has always been one of my least favorite weeks in terms of song selection; I just don't care about literally any of these songs. I will say at least some of the songs were different than in previous years. I love We's voice but has it ever been confirmed that ther speaking voice is a put on? I think it was the intro for Halle Bailey where she sounded totally normal. I am not surprised she didn't make it into the Top 3 but she's the only one that maybe there's the possibility of an off chance that I'd listen to her music outside of AI :)
  20. I came here seeking validation for being a little bit peeved at the results, but then I thought to myself... imagine if I was Luke reading all of these comments about how I didn't deserve the win after all the blood, sweat and tears... so I will aspire to be a more generous human being :) But I agree with this comment whole-heartedly! The editing is very heavy-handed and at least to me it was extremely clear who was going to win based on the way they positioned Luke after the first two bakes.
  21. It is nice to see contestants grow in confidence but I think Zachariah has gone over the edge lol I mean, he was always a little corny and extra but I find myself getting kind of annoyed by his strutting and pointing and, dare I say, cockiness? Maybe it's just me. I thought the styling this week was pretty awful. Again I'm picking on Zachariah specifically but Haven and We looked a little kooky too. Alanis was a great judge, such a sweetheart (and she looked fab!)
  22. There are some elements that are similar to Cheryl Strayed's story but I don't believe it's explicitly autobiographical
  23. Entering my bitchy era... This was Haven's best performance yet but I still don't really care for her and her helicopter dad creeps me out. We sounded AMAZING but it's so weird to see her emote so strongly with her vocals yet her face almost doesn't move at all. Marybeth was boring Tyson is incredibly talented but boring Zachariah is entertaining, I could see him getting a show in Vegas but I don't think I can see him becoming a recording artist You guys are so mean to my poor sweet Oliver. lol for whatever reason he's my underdog favorite, I enjoyed his rendition of that Radiohead song and I'm glad Katy saved him <3
  24. I've never tried baking feulletine into a cheesecake crust so I can't really say with any authority but I did try making a churro crust out of processed churros and it was NOT GOOD lol. The texture was this weird crunchy-chewy monstrosity that came across as incredibly stale and really truly ruined the cheesecake. That's not to say a jacked up filling is any better, of course, since the hallmark of a good (American-style) cheesecake is the texture of the filling so... I guess I don't have a point. haha
  25. I would like to take this opportunity to admit that I legitimately like the song "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" and that Nutsa did a surprisingly serviceable job. BUT (there's always a but!) I think the thing about Nutsa that drives me crazy is it all seems so performative. I don't get a sense that she really cares about music at all but she definitely cares about the attention, the possible fame and the $$$. Hey, I don't know her, I could be way off base, it's just a vibe I get. And to be fair, it's not just her. The contestants that resonate with me are the ones who really FEEL the music and that's not all that common.
