  1. I second wanting to see life after Richard for Emily more than anything else. I don't see journalism being wrong for Rory per se, even being a foreign correspondent. I could see her in Germany covering the migrant crisis. She likes doing hard research and writing editorials so that actually suits her well. I don't see her as a war journalist so no Syria or Eastern Ukraine for her. There's different kinds of journalism, some obviously suited her and some didn't. I just don't see ASP to be able to handle hard sensitive news like that well. I think it's hilarious that the show ended with her following the Obama campaign and it could possibly start with her on the road with the Clinton one. Especially since Hilary running for president was mentioned so much on the show. I actually am looking forward to Lane, but that's because I listen to Keiko's Drunk Monk Podcast and she's adorable. And also, they kept Lane around for far too long and gave her a kind of sad ending. I want that fixed.
  2. I thought her telling the minister was just dumb. Just say "thank you for the advice and your time to discuss this awkward issue. Lets just eat now." and be done with it. No need for her to tell him she had sex awhile ago and the "you'd like the 40 Year Old Virgin" quip. That seems like a ridiculously naive way for someone who wants to be a foreign correspondent to react to the situation regardless of how awkward.
  3. My husband when he was back in high school and college was pretty much the same. Kids need to be adopted, people who "breed" are selfish assholes adding to over population etc etc. We had arguments about it. Now he's a "I can't wait to have kids when can we start" kind of guy. Situations change the tunes people sing.
  4. Max's meeting of Emily was part of Lorelai's insane freakout at her mom for not reacting how Lorelai wanted when hearing about the engagement. That's not really a meeting, that's a mistake. Since Max was driving and figured out at the last minute what was going to happen, should have turned the car around and calmed her down. I'd like to think that there was an off camera meeting of the parents at some point. Otherwise, the entire thing would just be a farce. Especially considering how gung ho Emily and Richard were about "meeting" Luke and having Luke over (even if it was a bit nefarious at times).
  5. Like George Lucas and Star Wars. Thank goodness for people like Lawrence Kasdan and JJ Abrams. I don't understand how she could have been THAT injury prone on the job. I get maybe cutting herself or burning herself, but almost breaking legs and cutting open the BACK of her shirt? Does she do somersaults while cooking? And the smacking people in the face or throwing food all over the place (when her wedding invitations came), ugh. It must be nice that your best friend is basically your boss.
  6. PARIS: Yes. She was puffed in 1946, became the president in '47, and in '48 she actually moved the group to the very table you sat at today. I guess the Puff's could have started in El Paso and then moved to Chilton and brought the table. Or all the Puff groups have to sit at a specific table in the cafeteria, like the northern-most one or closest to the exit or something? But it could also be the writers didn't put any thought in it.
  7. Don't forget that George Washington blew his nose in the park. But seriously, does a place only have history if there are major events that happened? Stars Hollow was founded in 1779. Even if there are 2 things of import they noted within the show, it doesn't take away from the fact that Stars Hollow has history as a town. Driving through Long Island, Upstate NY, and New England, there are several towns which pride themselves in their history even though nothing really significant happened. They're just old. That's the history. Don't know why they couldn't. Somehow, Sandra Day O'Connor was a Puff who moved them to the table that we see them sitting at. Sandra Day O'Connor went to high school in El Paso, Texas. So unless Chilton was dragged over from El Paso, not likely.
  8. When you're from a city and have a chip on your shoulder (NYC for Jess and Hartford for Paris), anything smaller is pretty Bumfuck. Heck if you're from NYC like Jess, most cities are pretty Bumfuck in comparison. If you've ever been in a room with someone from LA and someone from NYC arguing over which city is better, I'm sure you know that attitude I'm talking about. Wasn't it mainly the teens who gave off that impression anyways? People who want to see the world and travel as opposed to settling down in a small town with a family? Emily seemed to regard it as a quaint small town but she hated the idea of having intimacy like that. It can be both. It's a generic dead-end small town in the middle of nowhere in New England that happens to have a lot of history and is well loved and kept to make it a tourist destination. Say what you want about Taylor, but they did show how much effort went into maintaining Stars Hollow and keeping it a good tourist attraction.
  9. Places like the Hamptons (and a more and more towns on LI at the east end) are well known to have insanely rich people weekend there or have second homes there, etc...However, the townies, the people who keep the place running and "born and bred there" are not in the same "class". When we first moved to LI we checked out the Hamptons (never again) and it's pretty easy to see which places are for the rich/celebrities and which places are for the locals. Gilmore Girls is ostensibly about the townies. And more specifically, the townies who basically live right in town and run the small businesses. Any celebrity there would probably be more in the outskirts as the ones who move to small towns are there to have a more "normal life". And also be able to build massive homes. Similarly, it's like FNL the TV show being set in Dillon, TX but it's based on Odessa. Stars Hollow is just a typical small Connecticut town. Dillon is a typical small Texas football town. Tree Hill (OTH) is a typical small North Carolina basketball town. Plus with the over the topness of Stars Hollow, they really can't use the name of a real town.
  10. Lorelai Gilmore, the golden child of financial stability.
  11. Every second one of us spends trying to figure out Lorelai's budget is a second more than any of the writers.
  12. I don't think they would have stayed together regardless of Luke because in the end of the day, Lorelai wasn't completely into her relationship with Max. Not even taking into account that she called Christopher at her bachelorette party. Like Max said in one of his rants, she never thought about really having him be a part of her life. He would have no say in Rory or her upbringing (I'm sure he would have handled the Dean/Lindsay and the yacht situation a lot better because Rory sure as hell wasn't "done" being raised), basically had no function in the house except to cook, and even the idea of getting him a house key just didn't occur to Lorelai. It seemed she liked the idea of having Max or a devoted man in her life rather than dealing with the realities of what having him in her life meant. It's hard to see things from Max's side as well. He had to get a brief overview on being in a relationship with Lorelai from Dean? And I think this was after he was already engaged? Heck his proposal was basically his response to his dick measuring contest with Luke. But I do think he was pretty quick to accept Lorelai's flaws and quirks. Basically, the bits we saw of their relationship were too dysfunctional to really make a judgement on whether or not they had longevity as a couple in real life. They got together, broke up because Lorelai panicked, got back together because Lorelai panicked again, got engaged because Max was coming off his argument with Luke, and broke that off because Lorelai realized she was interested but not "marriage" interested. And who yells at someone about not telling people they're in a relationship when the other person is freaking out about their child who has just runaway? I don't think I saw too much chemistry between them and their Venn diagram of similarities probably only included "Rory's a good kid". But I did think Max was an ok enough guy, just not right for Lorelai. Emily goaded an idiot into thinking he had a decent shot at winning Lorelai back. She didn't just invite Chris to the vow renewal to be a guest at her vow renewal. If she had just sent him an invitation and what had happened, happened, that'd a different story. But she went out of her way to go see Christopher and tell him that he should use the opportunity at the wedding to go after Lorelai. Richard gets the pass because he wasn't the one who went. This isn't the type of thing that Emily and Richard would really talk about doing, it's not the way a person like Richard would handle this type of thing. Most likely, he didn't know beforehand, but sure as hell did afterwards. As Lorelai said, he's the Eva to Emily's Adolf. I think it's in poor taste to make comparisons like that in general, but history doesn't paint Eva with the same paintbrush it does with Adolf.
  13. I mean, I'm not religious at all but I thought it was just kitschy and amusing; and if I weren't trying to get rid of useless crap in my life and willing to spend money on more useless crap, would probably have one as well if I saw it at the thrift store or something. Lorelai has an alarm clock that makes animal sounds and a crude monkey lamp. It's really not something that stood out to me as odd in their mini cabinet of curiosities.
  14. I agree. I think I actually resented and hated being forced to hate Lindsay more than I hated Lindsay herself. Dean and Lindsay were just dumb kids who married way too early. And their issues basically stemmed from the fact that they were so young and naive.
  15. Don't forget the one where he and his friends didn't like someone in the dorm, so they sandwiched him between mattresses and threw him out the window every night for a month until he transferred.
  16. I get what you're saying in that no one should really get judged based on the people before and Luke was being a dick in that regard. However, I was under the distinct impression that it started with mooching small things with all of Liz's other boyfriends/husbands. And moochers tend to be very charismatic people. We saw the annoying but somewhat decent guy that worked out. Luke had to go through many that were more or less annoying but were also awful and then basically having to help Liz get back on her feet (probably via money and some time). Watching someone make horrible life choices and choosing terrible guys for ~25 years (I assume her first ~15 years couldn't have been that bad) must be trying. Luke doesn't care about the next stop on Liz's "horrible guy train", he just wants to put the brakes on before he sees yet another trainwreck. So from that point of view, I get why Luke gives zero shits about TJ early on. Why bother? ~25 years gives leeway to make snap judgements about the type of people he'd figure Liz would associate with.
  17. God no. I have enough to deal with from undergrad and grad. I did have friends that went to Philips Exeter Academy and Andover for boarding and their families had to take out private loans for that. Though we ended up at similar places in the end, so I hope it was worth it for them? Just calculating the average interest for a typical undergrad student loan ~4.5% and assuming Chilton cost ~$10000/year that's about $450/year interest (I'm basing that on the $5000 enrollment fee for Rory's first semester, so the actual tuition cost might be higher). That's not taking into account the fact that to get a loan for high school, it'd have to be a private loan and wouldn't be your typical student loan (correct me if I'm wrong; I do see something for k-12 education loan and it's about the same rate as a private loan). The interest for that according to google is 9-12%. That's about $900-$1200/year interest. The 1999 Jeep Wrangler (and also the 2000) is usually around 20 mpg/highway. Stars Hollow is about 30 minutes from Hartford so the roundtrip makes it ~60min and we can assume Lorelai drives 60mph on average (makes math easier). That means each trip will be 3 gallons of gas. The average gas price from 2000-2003 was ~1.45, but we'll make it $1.50. That'd be $4.50 to fill the tank for each trip and $234 for the entire year. But Richard and Emily often went away (Europe, Martha's Vineyard, etc...) so they didn't go to FND for all 52 weeks meaning that number is high anyways. You can get a 500pill bottle of Ibuprofen for $15.79 from CVS. The Ben and Jerry's could just easily be canceled out with the Friday night meal they'd inevitable end up buying. Lorelai seems to be explicitly the day shift manager so there wouldn't be missed shifts. And in terms of necessary overtime (if there's a function at the inn) there seems to be no indication they'd force her to be there, after all she was able to go to NYC with Billy Burke's character and that's not even work. So she's running a deficit of about $250/year as opposed to between $900-$1200. I assume we can continue this in the All Episodes talk thread or the mods head will explode.
  18. It came off to me as a "fool me once, fool me twice, fool me three times" type of thing. She's had at least 3 husbands before TJ and obviously a myriad of boyfriends. Apparently they've all been free loading assholes who end up leaving her high and dry and worse off. Luke would honestly have to be a complete moron to expect anything better from TJ.
  19. To be fair, I'm looking at the interest of my student loans and I'd much rather have to go to a fancy dinner every week where I could just tune out the BS if I wanted to.
  20. Not only did Sookie screw up their first gig, she also made like a million broccoli tarts instead of just a couple when trying recipes for Emily's gig. She was the worst. Lorelai and Rory would often times just walk out without paying for their food and drink (as well as many of the other townies). Definitely something I've noticed here or there. But I think it's been handwaved as a lot of these people just having a tab that carry over. Sometimes the meal goes on the tab, sometimes they pay. I don't quite get it, but it's the simplest explanation. Liz is definitely one I remember stealing food from Luke's. She took steaks and pie for that meal she made when she brought TJ to town and wanted to cook a meal "for her guys". TJ also helped himself to free coffee and donuts in that episode his shower didn't work.
  21. From the site, Sookie is the one who set up the catering business (without really consulting Lorelai) and it was before she gave birth to Davey.
  22. IIRC, Richard didn't yell at Dean. He did raise his voice when talking about Dean in the exact same way that grandfather Huntzberger did in regards to Rory. Except in the Rory situation, there were two people talking about how she wasn't good enough with only Logan trying to help. On the flip side, both Emily and Lorelai were trying to diffuse the situation and change topics as quickly as possible on top of Rory speaking up. Lorelai expressed regrets to Dean before defending Richard to Rory after Dean had left. They were more upset about where she was working rather than the fact she was working. I think many people would be upset if their daughter "the smartest girl in her class destined for Vassar" ended up a maid and then "working in a hotel" with a GED with no college degree (until the end of season 2 where she finally gets an AA). However when she finally opened her own inn, they were both very proud of her. However, I'd also to be hard pressed to call them feminists. They were just people who wanted the very best for their child and grandchild, both who were females.
  23. I'd think it probably depends on the filming schedule and if the rumors about Alexis are true. If a 7 month pregnant Alexis is filming, they'd be hard pressed to make her not pregnant. Or they could just hide it in ridiculous ways. But I do agree. I'd rather be brought back into their lives just to be brought back and not necessarily because of a "cliche 'women's show' big event", ie: wedding; miscarriage; pregnancy; etc... Along the same lines, it's probably why I don't want Rory necessarily getting back together or anything with any of her old exes.
  24. Didn't he also threaten to sue Luke for that for some reason? I found that entire storyline so bizarre.
