  1. I enjoyed season 1 of Stranger Things but i’m finding I actually kind of hate season 2. It really feels like a piece of fan fiction...I think the writing is pretty crappy. I found 11 to be a very appealing character in the first season but i’m finding her really annoying now. The whole thing is like a couple rpg guys (of which I actually am one lol) decided to turn their awesome Call of Cthulhu campaign into a TV series... ...oh, and the episode where she takes off to find her sister is incredibly bad. The “gang” of supposedly tough ne’er-do-wells is laughably lame. They don’t even achieve Warriors parody quality...
  2. Yeah, I don’t disagree with you. I don’t really understand myself but it just bugs me when I see it in advertising. It doesn’t bother me in any way at all in TV shows or movies. Maybe it’s because the ad is such a small segment and so that element tends to take greater significance or something. Also, I don’t ever believe for a second that it isn’t a completely calculated element. Maybe i’m too cynical but I just don’t believe it’s ever because those are just the best actors...and that’s part of the problem for me too. I always kind of imagine the guy who owns the company is a total racist pig but he wants to sell his shit so yup, biracial couple in the advert! And as far as that iPad ad goes, the first few times I saw it I assumed it was a boy. I think because of the way she says “dude!” When she sees her friend’s cast. It sounds a bit “bro-ish.” Then I noticed the nail polish...and I thought “hmm, ok I guess it’s a boy who wears nail polish? Edgy?” Then I realized “ah, no it’s a girl but they are obviously doing that gender neutral thing.”
  3. As i’ve said before, I really hate ads that have these socially conscious elements. I’m conflicted because i’m neither racist nor homophobic. I have literally zero concern with who marries or gets nasty with whom and a persons race or sexual prefs have no impact on my interactions with them at all. But ads that are selling a thing and feature biracial or gay couples or something like the iPad ad that is obviously running with the gender-neutral kid really irk me. First it feels manipulative and calculated, and I think secondly is what pracarual gets at - this implication that these are things we’re all just experiencing every day and it’s just totally bland and normal. Like “well we’re selling stuff to America and we know Americans are gay and biracial so let’s do that!” I mean I know that’s what we’re shooting for in the long run but to me right now it just doesn’t work...
  4. There’s a commercial I see quite often but don’t know what it advertises. I think it might be Tylenol or Advil or something. It features one of those classic TV commercial modern families - young, hip with the tech, interracial. There might be a cute doggy around too. They are all going about their busy day around the house...dad’s at the computer doing stuff when one of the little scamps runs by and he swivels round in his chair and sits the kid on his lap. Mom is in the kitchen with kid #2 doing stuff when a carton of milk gets spilled all over and she quickly cleans up. No yelling and screaming. Everyone is just busy with family chaos and lovin it! The ad ends with mom and kid #2 in the kitchen doing what I assume is a happy milk clean-up dance. And mom’s moves are highly annoying! Hate that ad. And apparently it doesn’t even do a good job of burning the brand into my neurons...
  5. Those car ads (I think Honda Civic?) where people do that stupid wavey hand dance move. Jesus that’s annoying! Three adults (chronologically that is) crammed into the back of a Civic doing a little synchronized hand dance! I guess they are appealing to the young urban hip hop dance club types? I guess...
  6. Gotta jump on board the hatred for the iPad “what’s a computer?” Ad. I hated it the first time I saw it and my hatred continues to grow. Here’s what I hate... the music. It’s irritating as hell. the “what’s a computer?” line. It’s bullshit. We are not anywhere close to the point where “what’s a computer?” Is a question anyone is asking. Therefore, the kid comes across as a little techno-hipster smart ass. The girl boy. I know, the indistinctness of the kid’s gender is supposed to be another hip, forward-thinking element...you know, iPads are for people who are open-minded and not bound by mundane convention and are a part of a modern world free of old-world constraints and all that good stuff, but I can’t help it...I hate that stuff in commercials that are trying to sell crap. I’m sorry, but whenever I see a same sex couple or some other element like that in an ad it feels completely manipulative and forced and inauthentic. I can hear the ad execs saying “we need to get on this whole lbgtq thing pronto! Those people have money to spend too!”
  7. How else you gonna keep track of all those JD Power awards? Sure but that guy looks like he needs maybe a XXL but he’s wearing a quad! I mean the sleeves are below his elbows! Lol...
  8. Oh yeah for sure. On the scale of douchebags in the “real people” Chevy ads he’s a minor offender. But like I say, it’s one of those tiny things I get fixated on in ads.
  9. Here's the giant T shirt ad...just look how much T shirt that dude is wearing! :-D
  10. I hate anything and everything related to Tangerine (the bank). The ads with the hipster R&B music. Ugh! But even just the name. "Tangerine." I can just imagine the stupid hipster ad agency meetings... The Chevy ads remain a concern, lol. I see mention a few pages back of the Silverado ones. One of them features a husky black dude who is wearing the worlds largest T shirt. Its one of those things that once seen can't be un-seen! Now whenever the ad comes on I find myself unable to resist marveling at how huge that T shirt is...it's a serious distraction that keeps me from enjoying the rest of the commercial! lol... Also back a few pages there was mention of the Windows ads featuring the nurse "pranking" the kid patient by walking in and telling him she has "bad news" and then showing him how she can plaster bug eyes on his picture in Windows. Amaze balls! But I find myself wondering why she didn't go full in on the prank?? She should have walked in and said "I have bad news Timmy...you have stomach cancer. You'll be dead in 2 weeks..." Then when he started bawling she could drop the "har har just kidding here watch me paste some googly eyes on your photo" on him. That would have been super! Yeah...that ad was poorly conceived. The ad with the evil little kid cutting the hair of various stuffed animals and then going for his little sister but ohhhhhh mom catches him just in the knick of time the cute little whipper-snapper! Then she gets her designer jeans and high heels on and goes Swifferin! Idiotic... There's an ad running for a hotel chain right now. Can't remember which one though but at the very end of the ad there's a quick shot of a woman and she does this little dance move while facing right into the camera. There's something about the move that just irritates the hell out of me! It's funny how the tiniest little thing in a commercial can just absolutely drive you nuts. It's literally about one second of video lol...another example of that is the ad for the number bed where the chubby guy does a little "happy hop skip" move. Just the tiniest little moment but really annoying. Oh, and the Ancestry Dot Com ads are really annoying. I hate all the people in those ads! They all seem like the dimmest, dullest, most irritating idiots you can imagine knowing. I mean these people have lived in the USA or Canada ALL THEIR LIVES but they walk around in kilts or lederhosen or whatever because of their presumed ancestry? lol...and now they find out they had it wrong so OOPS gotta change the way I dress or the artwork I buy now! lol...
  11. lol, that perfume ad! Epic bad. That is some fragrance! Wow! It's gonna allow you to finally bust through those glass walls that have been keeping you imprisoned in your current, objectively terrible state of existence! Oh Gabrielle! Come rescue me! Set me free you fragrance of the gods!
  12. Those Anoro ads with the utterly hideous rendition of Go Your Own Way are truly gag inducing! The last "go your own way" mimicking Buckingham's voice makes me want to punch the TV.
  13. The thing about those Volvo ads that bugs me is the vague "ethnic diversity" of the family. Don't get me wrong, ethnic diversity is great! But I find it annoying in advertising...it feels manipulative and manufactured. I feel the same way when ads feature same sex couples. I can always hear the ad agency conversations that went on..."now we want to appeal to a modern, hip sensibility so let's make the couple getting married in this jewelry ad two women! And we'll see them leaning in for a kiss BUT NOT actually kissing! Too much! Oh, and make sure they are attractive! Nothing butch!" On top of that, the use of the usual annoying "indie" song is of course bothersome. What is this supposed to be? Dad and his little girls favorite song? They go out to shows together and y'know, hang out and stuff? So close and loving!
  14. yeah and the shot at the end where they snap a happy selfie and thank god the teeth are finally pristine white and life is good - the whole theme of adverts using modern smart phone and social media catch phrases and habits in a non-ironic/sarcastic way is really annoying. It seems many advertising agencies think most people are fully on-board with the whole facebook narcissism thing. Like most of the population of North America just thinks its great when people are walking around snapping selfies and capturing vids to try and "go viral" on youtube.
  15. oh I just looked up the ad and see that I had it wrong. She asks "why are you deleting these photos?" Guess I need to pay closer attention to these annoying adverts! lol... actually, the version of the ad I see on youtube has a line in it that I haven't seen on TV before. The worried girl takes a second look at the photos and says "ohhh yeah. They are a little yellow." And she's a little more likeable. Wonder why that is always cut from the ad because the thing works better with that line left in...
  16. yeah and the strange intensity and over-concerned way the first girl acts is funny...you'd think she was wondering why her friend had sprouted a second head in the pictures.
  17. Oh man I had to register just to take part in this topic. I LOVE bitching about annoying commercials! :D Here's a few of my "faves"... Trivago Guy of course. So weird. There's just something not quite right with this dude...and the one where he does a little dance? It's uncomfortable to watch! Part of the problem also is that the company seems like such a...errr...non-service. It's like if 25 years ago a company advertised that they would look up numbers in the phone book for you or something. The Chevy "real people not actors" ads. They've started to dwindle finally but for a while there you couldn't watch TV for more than 30 seconds without seeing Mr. pasty doe-eyed soft beard dude pointing out things about cars that nobody cares about and then listening attentively to the utterly moronic responses of all the real people. The ads should actually be titled "real annoying people, not actors." It truly seems like they set out to make all these people come across like idiots. They even did one ad where the pitch man shows the car to a bunch of dogs! lol...tells you something about how much the "real people" really matter... Oral B. Actually, pretty much any toothbrush/paste or razor ads are almost universally stupid and annoying. You'd think you were talking about a Formula 1 car or something! It's a fucking toothbrush! lol...but the Oral B ads where some gal recounts asking her dentist if an electric toothbrush would be "better than a manual." Something about the way they are filmed and the way the people speak always bugs me. The one featuring the black woman where she does the worlds worst "mind blown" hand sign is really bad - she has a strange juttery way of speaking with little pauses and then quick phrases. The Sensodyne ads are bad too where "a real dentist" is being "interviewed" about how they always recommend Sensodyne for their patients with sensitive teeth...oh! And the ad where the two girls are looking at pictures and one exclaims loudly "why aren't you smiling in any of these pictures??" and it's because the other one has yellow teeth poor girl! Luckily her friend is able to save her! edit - thought of one more that I've lately found really annoying - the ad where 2 parents are standing outside the bathroom door vid-capping the action while their kids totally destroy the bathroom! "This is gonna go viral!" they exclaim and then later dad is cleaning up the mess and mom runs in and exclaims "we've got 20,000 hits already!" Quality parenting.
