  1. The word oriental has no real negative connotations in the UK. Until recently the uks Chinese population was tiny, and its still quite small now. Other offensive were still used of course primarily when asking about getting a takeaway but the word is a just a dusty old fashioned word here, mainly seen on Chinese restaurants or on businesses that trade with the East, whether European or East Asian owned Plus of course there is no real Korean or Japanese populations in the UK. No one in the UK would think to use as a term of abuse. This of course goes both ways, the USA use age of s*** is a pearl clutcher in the UK. When it's been us programmes it, s either been dubbed out, or faced protests if they let one slip through. Not sure how it is now of course.
  2. Sandi is an well established since the 1980's. She's worked both commercial channels and the BBC she's hosted News Quiz for a long time on radio 4. While she's not the biggest name out there she's well known and has a solid middle class fan base. Mel and Sue started on their own show on Channel 4 called Late Lunch and was much loved and was promoted to a better slot and then for some reason they walked away afraid of being typcast. Sue says it was one of their biggest mistakes as they did not work regularly again for years. I think Sue ended selling her flat as the mortgage was too much. Then she started getting gigs on the BBC presenting and comedy panel circut and it saved her. Supersizers came on and this led to GBBO. The thing with the BBC is that to those on the inside of the corporation is that they will always get regular gigs even if they don't have their own show. Regular appearances on thses shows means that your own stand up shows have plenty of free publicity and helpfully drive your own DVD sales. etc. There is a reason why people think there are only 12 actors in the UK, once you are on TV and land a popular role you'll always be on first call, many shows will be writtenas vehicles for particular names. See David Jason, Robson Green, Kevin Whatley. Brenda Blethryn. Jason Issaacs, Sarah LancashireMartin Clunes etc etc. Presenters tend to have long lived contracts and as long you don't fuck up with drugs, hookers or seedy affairs then you can work for ever hopping from channel to channel.
  3. Several Positive reviews on the first episode of Great British Bake Off in Telegraph and the Guardian, so maybe the actual genius of the show is the format and maybe the Production team actually have a lot to do with it's success. I always loved Mel and Sue and their creaky end of the Pier Schtick, but there are plenty of people who don't. Also to paint the people who felt loyal to the BBC as some sort of saints rather people making shrewd long term career choices is laughable. Channel 4 is tiny in comparison to the BBC it does not have it's multiple media platforms and the 360 deals it can offer talent is massivr compared the commercial channels. Mel and Sue will be long rewarded for the public display fealty to the Beeb and already mulitple presenting gigs have fallen their way. Besides the BBC has Radio 2 and 4 to offer lucrative shows to and particular the panel and comedys on radio 4 act as steady flow of appearance fees for 'resting' comedians and actors. The reviews for the https://www.theguardian.com/tv-and-radio/2017/aug/16/the-big-family-cooking-showdown-the-bbc-disastrous-attempt-to-recreate-great-british-bake-off on the BBC are not good, in fact awful. Anyway I look forward to GBBO on Ch 4 I love Sandi and like Fielding so have no qualms about the show.
