  1. I really wonder if both of Renee's appearances in David's room, especially the second one, were real. We know that he has hallucinations there, not always due to shrooms, and Renee seemed very not in character both times, that it makes me think that it wasn't Renee at all.
  2. I probably wouldn't have had an issue with the phones, except the show made a point that Kristen had no service and it ended up being an important plot point, with her husband not able to reach her. That, coupled with the fact that Ben's call to David wasn't especially important to the plot--Ben could have had the same conversation in the mirror and it would have been just as effective--did make it all seem sloppy to me.
  3. Yeah, I don't think we can take anything in the demon baby scene seriously. But, as for the general cell service issue. I did find it strange that Kristen's phone was without service but David's was fine. My hubs pointed out that it could have been as simple as they were on different carriers. True, but I still think it's a little sloppy in the writing department. Of course, I found this entire episode a little sloppy.
  4. I thought their daughter played on the team? But, from what we've seen of their daughter, that seems unlikely. Have they ever explicitly said she was on the team?
  5. The only thing I can come up with is that she had a hand-me-down couch in her office that was also a hide-a-bed? That had sheets on it? Or maybe she and the hubs had been having trouble before he went off to climb Everest and she was spending nights out there? In any case, it seems weird that either all of a sudden there is (conveniently) a bed in there OR this is how we find out there was always a bed in there. These details... As for the husband promising not to tell Sheryl's secret. All he knows about the boyfriend is that Kristen doesn't like him. Kristen might be a sort of critical spouse (again, we have never seen her actually be a spouse, so we don't know) and her randomly not liking someone isn't that strange to him. It could also be that he bought the line Sheryl gave him about Kristen wanting her to stay single and, wanting Sheryl to figure less prominently in their lives, is willing to keep her new boyfriend a secret so that she's not around as much?
  6. I don't think she was supposed to be watching the kids, at least at that moment. The girls had been at school. It may very well have been that she was about to be watching them and was planning to get Leland out of the way before they got home. But, then again, she was having sex in her daughter's office (which I didn't realize had a bed...)
  7. I really enjoyed this episode, although so far I've enjoyed every episode. And, yeah, I cried a bit when Wade found the recipe book. I guess I'm a bit in the minority, but I really like Forrest and Delia (this is actually one of the few shows I watch where I like everyone). I do think they are little overly-stylized, so to speak, but it works. Oh, one little lie..I did not like the sister. However, I don't think we were meant to. She really was pretty shitty to Delia.
  8. The way I saw it, it had more to do with Mary's control issues than anything. I don't think she was upset with Georgie having money--he's had money and jobs before--but his independence. And while I think there are very good reasons not to send a 10 year old, even a prodigy, to college, it felt to me like the reasons for Mary's resistance were much more along the lines of not wanting her baby grow up than worrying about his mental and social well-being. My MIL was much like this. When my husband (the older of the two boys) was about thirteen, she had a very, very hard time dealing with it and really damaged their relationship. When his younger brother hit about the same age, she went overboard trying to keep him a baby. And why I say overboard, he's now in his 40s, still living at home, and has never had a job. I think sometimes when women put so much, or even all, of their own identity into motherhood, this happens when they start seeing the end of the their "active" motherhood (not a good term...motherhood is always active! How about, "mothering of minors") they might start to struggle and sometimes that comes out as controlling.
  9. I'll admit that this was not my favorite episode. It was just a little too out there for me. Plus, I kept being bothered by the fact that David and, especially, Kristen, would even agree to drink sangria. I can sort of get David as he was visiting his dad, but both David and Kristen were sent there "for work" and Kristen really should know better that to do anything that would impair her judgment when her job is to observe for anything strange. There are plenty of little white lies to tell to get out of drinking (but apparently not "I'm pregnant" because the pregnant sister wife was drinking...) Okay, here is what stuck with me. I don't know if this was intentional in the show or, as my husband claims, bad editing. In the scene right before Ben and the girlfriend (forgot her name, also keep thinking she's Idina Menzel...) and Ben is trying to justify the weirdness. In one shot, the woman is sort of reclining on her left side, Ben seems to notice her necklace (there is a close up on the necklace) and then the camera goes back to a bumbling Ben for a moment. When it returns to the woman, she is sitting up in the bed, to the right of where she was in the previous shot. Then, the camera goes back to Ben and, when it returns to the woman, she's back reclining on her left side. I made the hubs rewind this about three times trying to figure it out. He insists it was just a bad editing job, but it seems too deliberate to me. Is the woman switching between the two sisters?
  10. Well, very few people knew about the crimes. Kristen's friend had said that the police were keeping things under wraps. My theory on this is that the wife had what was once called multiple personality disorder (I know that is not the correct title, but I can't remember what is...), which may or may not have been a result of the miscarriage. I'm sorry, I'm having trouble believing that a demon would be named Howard, but there you go. Anyway, the part where all the other personalities came out definitely said MPD and not demonic possession to me. As for the husband, I think he knew about the MPD. We know so little about him, so this is way out in conjecture land for me...I think he recognized which of the personalities would be most willing to murder with him, and that would be Howard, and thought it would be a good alibi if they ever did get caught that they could claim demonic possession. When he realized that they police might be on their tale, he called for the exorcism. All that being said, I'm actually glad that the show left a fair amount out so that the audience can come up with their own theories. In a lot of shows, this is just bad writing. Here, I think it is a conscious choice and it is one of the appeals of this show for me.
  11. I actually thought that WAS Pastor Jeff when the child psychologist showed up. Pastor Jeff and a lot of the incidental smaller characters who show up tend to play on a lot of stereotypes people of have Texans or people from the South. On the one hand, I get how this draws a clear comparison between Sheldon (who is "different") and "everyone else," but I'm also not a fan of too much use of cliches.
  12. That was an interesting episode--not perfect, but good enough that it kept my attention. It does seem like they are moving away from a procedural format, which I think is a smart idea. When dealing with the unknown/supernatural, it's hard to have arcs that wrap up nicely in 42 minutes, so I think the longer arcs just work better. I think I've realized my problem with the L's...I don't have a problem with Kristen having daughters. I actually think her conflicted feelings about motherhood, which have only been hinted at so far, will come into play down the line. However, four is just too many. In my mind she has 2--the youngest with mystery heart condition that no doctor can treat but, according to the supposed prophet, is no big deal and the older (but not oldest) one who is at least smart enough to not go to play in a graveyard with a strange kid who won't reveal her face. The other two just seem to make noise. As for the grandmother, she's definitely a bit trashy, but I don't think I can attribute her actions with Leland to stupidity. It seems that Leland is...something. Whether he's Satan or a demon or just some guy who goes to the dark side, there is just something a bit more to him. What he is not is appealing in any way and Grandma doesn't seem to be unable to attract male attention. To me, it seems like he has some sort of power, for lack of a better word, and Grandma's horrendous decision are not completely of her own making. I would like to think that no one, bad grandma or not, would let a strange man hang around with 4 young girls in their bedroom with the door closed. That is just...icky...and I'm surprised that Kristen wasn't more freaked about it even before she realized it was Leland. I do hope they don't try to pair up Kristen and David. They both have too much going on and the show doesn't need to add in a romance on top of everything else. I mean, if they have to pair someone up with Kristen, I almost rather it were Ben, if only because it would give Aasif Mandvi more screen time (and I find him to be the most interesting of the bunch). But, even that wouldn't make much sense. It does seem like Kristen and Ben have a much more realistic friendship than David and Kristen.
  13. Then again, he's 10...and the Pastor and the secretary or whatever she is are adults. Obviously, the drunk secretary and her syphilis stories are, well, that...but the Pastor is a PASTOR. What he did was bullying and very much against the doctrine that he supposedly teaches in his church. I don't think anyone is arguing that Sheldon is not annoying and rude and whatnot, but that doesn't change the fact that he is a child and the Pastor is an adult in a position of authority. I'll be honest, I find the Pastor to be one of the weakest parts of the show. I would much rather they had a less slapsticky character who could actually challenge Sheldon on beliefs (and from whom Sheldon could learn something about diversity of thought and tolerance), not one who seems scared of him and then participates in passive aggressive bullying. All this, though, I sort of have to agree with @Katy M that it is a sitcom and it at least gave us the opportunity to see Missy give the Pastor the big dunk.
  14. I really enjoyed this episode and I appreciate how the show has figured out a way to make this show about Wade finding his way in life and using his dating as a component of that instead of this show being about Wade dating. I don't know if we'll see Lena the bartender again, I wouldn't mind if we do or we don't, but she was a nice addition to this episode.
  15. On the one hand, there was much that I liked about this episode. The Missy story line was great (and, yeah, it was COACH!). The whole bit about not letting Missy play was also told well and in a way that it points out a lot of the latent misogyny there is out there--Coach felt he had to protect Missy, softball is for girls, etc. Plus, I am always here for a Missy-centric (and not Sheldon-centric) episode. But there were some things that made me uncomfortable. I hesitate in bringing up how Georgie was forced to listen to some very inappropriate stories from older women, although I do think that the intent was to make that uncomfortable, so I can't really fault the show there. However, I cringed when Meemaw had him buy beer. That just seemed a step too low for this family and, really, a crappy thing for a drunk grandmother to do. Also I thought the drunk grandmother was just a lazy gag. The other thing that really irked me was the whole bit about Sheldon in the dunk tank. I get that Sheldon is an extremely annoying child, but that was just a case of adults bullying a kid and playing it up for laughs. It's also why I felt that Missy dunking the pastor on the first try was especially satisfying.
  16. Personally, I like that they aren't able to find "proof" to a lot of the supernatural things--not that this means that it is definitely supernatural, but rather that some things just don't have explanations. I've mostly been able to separate myself from realistic expectations here, although the daughter's mysterious and possibly fatal heart condition that they can't seem to do anything about is hard to buy. I will say that I fell into the horror movie trap during this episode of screaming, "No! Not that!" during this episode. Sadly, it was not during any "scary" part, but when Ben had the woman put her head back during a nose bleed. Never do that! Put your head FORWARD! Sigh... While I do enjoy this show, I realized I would also enjoy a show that is just Ben going on various Ghosthunter-type shows and debunking what they are doing. Aasif Mandvi is definitely my favorite part of this show.
  17. Agreed! And now that I remember that, maybe it is a good thing that they are now in charge of the snack stand. I mean, the kids probably aren't too fond of their new choices of kale chips and kombucha smoothies (if that is actually a thing), but I can see Delia really going with it....
  18. I actually think it was probably the right move to split up. Sturgis knows his own issues, his own triggers, and what all that means. Meemaw can say that they pick up where they left off, but she has only seen one facet of Strugis's struggles. It sounded like, from what Sturgis said, he knows what he needs to do and that may include not having a romantic relationship. I will say I wasn't too fond of Meemaw going out with the Richard Kind character just to spite Sturgis. It's a shitty thing to do to something and I'm glad that Kind's character called it on her, very nicely. I was very proud of him when he said, "Wow! I do have a shred of dignity!"
  19. I have to say I really, really loved this episode. I didn't think it was some sort of miracle that Grace pulled off a good performance. Wade had said she was an amazing singer and her problem was confidence, not talent. And she wasn't so good that, in my mind, it was unbelievable. She just seemed to find her confidence. I also appreciated that they didn't do another story with Wade's friends trying to run his life and actually gave them a story line independent of Wade. Delia was a bit annoying, but in a way that was both intentional and funny. I was a bit put off by Michelle basically forcing them to volunteer and Ben putting them into a job a that they clearly weren't made for I mean, I can understand it the first time because he was in a pinch. However, signing them up to do it everyone month plus tournaments was overkill.
  20. Wow...Sheldon was actually, dare I say it, sweet in this episode. Even stranger, it was still in character for this usually off-putting (for me) boy! I have to give props to this show with how well they've handled the issue of mental health. Other shows have tried, but this is the only one I feel succeeded.
  21. I'm trying, but I can't remember this actually being addressed in YS. My guess is that it will come up later as things start to turn in the family.
  22. I think what is different with this show from, well, every other show with the over-involved group of friends is that, with this show, it makes sense. It isn't just a case of a group of people with boundary issues. Instead, it started with a man who was not functioning and his friends who cared enough to step in and help him and his daughters. And then it went a bit over the line, but that is what makes the show. I also really appreciate that this show has differentiated between Wade's family (his daughters) and his found family (his friends). Yeesh, I never thought I'd find a show about healthy boundaries in a Kaplan-produced sitcom!
  23. I finally got a chance to watch this (I had to wait for the hubs to get back home after a weekend away so he could watch it with me) and I think I have a basket full of unpopular opinions: 1 - I realized that I genuinely like this show, even if I have to not think about it so hard. I willingly admit that I overthink TV shows, but I also get creeped out easily so this one is easier for me to watch if I just take it on face value. 2 - Even though I complained about the L's (don't ask me to name them--they are just the L's in my mind) I think they are a pretty realistic as a group of sisters. Yes, they are annoying, but most groups of girls that age kind of are (says the Girl Scout troop leader...). 3- The Grandmother is the worst, but I want to see more of her. I mean, this sort of seems like a waste of Christine Lahti so far. I think it could be interesting to wrap her a bit more into the story. Plus, Christine Lahti is amazing... 4 - I would love it if they just dropped the whatever flirtation is going on between Kristin and David. The show doesn't need it as it has enough going on with their own personal crises. 5 - I want more Ben. I couldn't figure out why Kristen was crying at the end until someone here mentioned that it might be that because she thinks/realizes the mother killed her son and--ding ding ding!--that makes complete sense. The psychopathic kid story line was truly creepy and I think fairly well done, even though I couldn't believe that no institution would take this kid. Then I reminded myself to not think so hard about it... As for the husband, my guess is that he is dead but they just don't know about it yet. I have no interest in seeing him, but I would like his story at least ended somewhat well.
  24. I really like those moments when they remind us that Missy, who is wise beyond her years in a way that Sheldon is not, is actually still a little girl. I wish they would do that more often with Sheldon, though.
  25. I really enjoyed this episode and this series is currently one of my faves. The set up of a group of friends who are into each other's business to an unhealthy level is not uncommon in TV, but what is refreshing is to actually have a member that group try to set boundaries and be up front with the friends about needing them to step back. They won't, of course, but I appreciate the fact that show is recognizing that maybe there is a healthier way to deal with this.
