  1. i just watched it again - happened upon a repeat - o' joy! - and yes i have to agree - after the crash, we see very clearly the whole front room in flames, of course JUST after Bryn watched the plane crash into the steeple through those very windows, now burning. man, what a gyp!! i want the rest of this story!!! boo hiss!!
  2. What's with this "yous" business? it's East coast slang - like Southerners say "y'all" to mean 'you, plural' or 'you all' - we say "you's". Well, some of us anyway. Here in the big city (Philly) it's not quite as common as it is in the Pittsburgh/Punxsatawney area, Northeast Philly, and parts of NY and NJ. :)
  3. yeah i agree about Rebecca's editing - for a lack of formal education, she sure exhibits quite a bit of natural intelligence and sense, and she expresses herself very well. Her thought processes, and the words she uses in speaking, seem much more advanced than how she is being portrayed in the GED classes. That said, she and Abe are really hardline judgemental of Sabrina, and rigid about it to the point of cruelty. They probably don't even realize how 'Amish' they actually still are. They could ease up a bit; not to have their family 'be around' Sabrina, but be a little less hard-hearted. She may indeed be a trainwreck, and brought it all on herself, but they could at least express some basic human kindness towards her, wish her well, tell her they hope she's doing better - they don't have to be SO coldhearted. Jeremiah is an enigma; one moment I want to slap him for being an overgrown brat toddler who always HAS to be the center of attention, and if everyone is not paying attention to HIM, then it's the other person being 'selfish'. Um, no dude, YOU are the self-centered (and overbearing, bratty, ignorant) one. When R & A don't pay constant attention to him and his wife, here comes the whining and crying about being 'ignored'-? wtf dude, are you, like, 10? Big selfish baby. but then you see him holding a real baby, and he's kind and gentle - being a decent friend to Sabrina, offering support no matter what she's done, cause they are 'family' and she has no one else - and how he can be so thoughtful towards Mary - and you wonder .... wtf is up with this guy?? LOL
  4. that would so not be the case I would think in a normal therapy situation. actually, bringing in family members IS often part of couples therapy. When my brother and wife were going through marriage counseling, their therapist first did individual sessions with each of them, then had sessions with other family members included - they asked me to be there, which i willingly did, and it was so valuable. It can help give insight into 'why they act as they do', and can help the spouse understand them better based on 'where they come from', the behavior of the family of origin. Once all that was done, THEN the counselor did sessions with them as a couple. The family input helped them immensely in their understanding of each other. Brother and i also both benefited from it; we learned so much from each other since we each remembered different things, and sometimes remembered the same things very differently.... things that we likely would never have EVER brought up or discussed outside of a counseling context. From what I understand, this is a normal part of marriage counseling by many therapists who take a wholistic 'family team' approach . - and i have to say i LOVE Mary. She is a hoot! Mama has no f***s left to give. Her shunning has done the opposite of what it's intended to do - it has freed her, instead of cowed her into submission. I say bravo to that. From what she has said about her rumspringa time and being a wild teen, it seems like she was always not *quite* submissive enough to be 100% happy and comfortable in Amish life anyway. Yes, some of the stuff she is doing is ridiculous, and I'm sure played up to be even more so for the show - but she is a riot, nonetheless. :)
  5. bourbon, i really don't think the story meant to imply that it's "OK", nor to frame the society as pro-woman. I think the intention was to portray how the women of that culture feel about it from their own POV, why they do it willingly, and even consider it an important rite of passage - because in their perception, it is entirely a "women's thing". Of course, in reality, we know that it's just one more sickening thing men do to subjugate and control "their" woman (as if a woman is an object to be owned. feh). But to the women brought up in it, it was "traditional" and "women's business"; to them it's a normal part of life - and I think that's along the lines of what the script was intending to portray. Sad. Disturbing and sickening. And worst of all, it STILL goes on today. For anyone wondering about the "famous supermodel from Somalia", that would be Waris Dirie, and her book is Desert Flower. Apparently there's also now a movie made from the book. https://www.amazon.com/Desert-Flower-Extraordinary-Journey-Nomad/dp/0688172377
  6. welllll... the books won't tell you - apparently it was more historical, and these fictionalized characters were not in them. Even though we knew it was not renewed past 2 series, I had so hoped we might get a better ending than this. And i hadn't realized it was the doc's house - and that cry was was THE baby, as in - David's new sibling. Grim, indeed. and so disappointing, i actually had really come to love these characters and so wanted to get to see what happens to them all throughout the war. sigh
