    I Am Mother (2019)

All in all do you think Mother was a good mother?

    Season 5 Discussion Thread

I liked this season but I think people are being more critical of the three episodes because there are only three. Out of the two six-episode seasons I think there were at least three that were on par with or worse than these three.

    S05.E02: Smithereens

Contrary to what others are saying here (that this was just a pedestrian attempt at a lecture on texting and driving or even dependence on social media and smartphones in general), I feel it went further. I see a terrible path we are headed down where we are more isolated because of immersion in technology and also treat each other worse, not just due to online trolls or online criticism and bullying but that we devalue people as a dime a dozen; pics to be swiped left or right and easily dismissed. Many people are lonelier than ever too. Don't kid yourself to think that all this doesn't seep over into our everyday psyches in general. Chris's desperation should be something we all sympathize with to a point. I know I do.

    S05.E01: Striking Vipers

They did purposely show the scene in the beginning (eleven years earlier) where Karl mounts Danny on the sofa after playing the early, more primitive version of Striking Vipers. They must have shown that for some reason to indicate Karl was kind of into Danny in some way.

    S06.E10: START

All excellent points. I think it was very realistic that she would not end up in Russia. Both kids were too old and near adulthood to be forced to go to such a foreign, far-off and oppressive country at that point.

    S06.E10: START

Yes, and it was a hit song from that same year, 1987, so all the better.

    Renee: The future is cloudy....

Very well put! I agree with this 100%

    S02.E04: Other Women

But June insisted Omar take her with him when she stood in front of the truck, and then was reckless alone in his home. She got him killed. June is a selfish, selfish girl! She realizes now, as Offred, that sometimes you have to go along to get along. She'll create a new normal for herself once she's used to it. It's only been hard because she keeps resisting.

    S02.E04: Other Women

Yes, she's very strict (as I said). But she tried to comfort her many times and even told her that Offred doesn't have to carry June's guilt. And also, instead of being angry that she ran away, she showed sympathy that she was "kidnapped" against her will. So that could have gone a lot worse. When you think about it, all of her disciplines were a direct result of one (or more) of the handmaids defying her.

    S02.E04: Other Women

It's good that June/Offred is now finally able to stop resisting and is being more mindful than willful. Aunt Lydia was trying to help her through her pregnancy but all she did was to defy her and act difficult. When you think about that household, Aunt Lydia is the glue that holds it all together. She has the conviction of her beliefs. She's strict at times, but truly has everyone's best interests at heart it seems deep down.

    S02.E05: The Kennedy Curse

Yeah, before it even happened I was thinking someone will probably accidentally call him "President Kennedy" and then he will be clued in to all. But her looking him up on her iPad and him seeing all his family's tragedies was moving. Plus there was the usual "fish out of water" trope that can be fun to witness.

    S03.E10: New Year's Eve

I have to admit, that Hungry Hungry Hippos scene was hard to watch (I don't like witnessing domestic violence).

That it's never too young to get married?
  16. "Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones" was already a very well-done TV movie with a stellar performance by Powers Boothe as Jones. Did you not think that was sufficient? I thing re-doing something that has been done well is a bit pointless to be honest. There's plenty that hasn't been done that would make for good TV. Here's a clip from the film

    S02.E08: Creator/Destroyer

Yes, but let me ask you this: Did you see anything about how this was filmed or shot or transitional effects used that it was deliberately intended to be shown in reverse order? Did you notice any technique that wouldn't make sense if you showed them exactly as they are but in chronological order? I still say it was no different than taking any miniseries ever made and reversing the episode order (except for the final one, which is back to present day).

    S03.E09: Basque-ets

There was one line in this episode that really stood out and made me chuckle but now I can't remember it. Anyone else know which one I meant? Oh, wait, I remember now. It was when Ken called Chip and whispered "I'm in the bathroom" to which Chip responded "well congratulations" (not realizing he meant there at the restaurant).
  19. That's why I included her quote in my response. I was responding to her response and your follow-up.
  20. In my original statement which you were responding to I said "A lot of the suggestions I'm reading here are about cases that have been covered thoroughly and well in at least one (if not several) TV movies or series already. I think those should be eliminated as "done already"." I said nothing about the two that ACS covered "OJ" & "Cunanan/Versace". Those were good and never before covered as well. I was talking about suggestions like Jon Benet Ramsey, Jim Jones/Guyana, Betty Broderick, etc. All of those were already made into very memorable TV movies.

    S02.E08: Creator/Destroyer

I understand that to a point and realize that already, but the technique was not like shows that cleverly use flashbacks to explain everything in an artistic way. This literally was nothing more than just airing the episodes in reverse order. I mean you could take any miniseries and reverse the episode order and come out just like this; the following episode would explain what they had mentioned in the previous one. Of course all that's true if you show it in reverse order. And you could counter your point by saying that everyone would stay tuned to see the climax of how it all led up to the murder of Versace; not that they were so eager to see how Andrew was as a kid. I don't know, I just don't see good enough reason to warrant this. I think if I were to show this to someone I would show it episodes 8 to 1, and then finally 9.

    S02.E08: Creator/Destroyer

Do you think there was any special structure to the way the series was shot to make it meant to be shown in reverse chronological order? I mean, to me it seems like they took a normal series and just aired the episodes from last to first, so I don't see what their point was or what made it better this way. Each following episode seemed to end where the previous episode started. To me it seems they could have just as easily aired the episodes in the following order: 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and finally 9 and it would have been just as good -- or even better -- as we follow Andrew's natural progression of despair and depravity. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Basically this is a nine-part miniseries about Andrew Cunanan, not Versace. A part of me wonders if the real life Cunanan was such an interesting study to warrant this much focus or attention. I mean, it makes for good drama but isn't it almost glorifying his story or emphasizing his importance too much? It's almost as if Andrew is the celebrity here.
  23. A lot of the suggestions I'm reading here are about cases that have been covered thoroughly and well in at least one (if not several) TV movies or series already. I think those should be eliminated as "done already".

    S03.E07: Women's Conference

Do you think it was right or wrong for Mrs. Baskets to volunteer Martha for the stage lap dance to get her to loosen up? I kinda feel like Vegas isn't Martha's thing.
