  1. Fantastic recap, but I've gotta say I disagree with Mark about the elimination order not mattering. Yes, even the first queen to go home gets amazing exposure and a lot more gigs for at least the next year. But a queen who's there for every episode gets so much more exposure: so many more opportunities to show off her talent and wit and to make the fans love her and to coin some dumb catchphrase that's quoted on social media for the rest of eternity. As nasty as the fans were to Roxxxy about making it to the top 4 on AS2, I bet you she got a bigger financial boost from that season than Coco or Ginger did. I'm not saying there aren't exceptions, but in general, I think lasting on the show longer is definitely better for your career. So I get why the queens take the elimination strategy so seriously.
  2. Quick response to Dave's comment about there being issues with Rebecca's character continuity on Crazy Ex-GF: I think the show's goal has always been to puncture this cliche'd rom-com fantasy, and the abrupt change in how they portrayed Rebecca was part of their strategy. They set the Rebecca of season 1 up as a stereotypical rom-com character (with a few small cracks in the facade showing in a humorous, low-stakes way). That was how she saw herself, that was how most of her friends chose to see her, and that is generally the side of her that the show presented to us. And then at the very end of season 2, that vision of Rebecca is suddenly shattered, and everybody has to face who Rebecca actually is. And the show makes its point more effectively by doing it that way. I may be retcon-ing this, and I'm probably not explaining myself well. I guess I'm saying that the Rebecca of season 3 was always there; she was just willfully not seeing a lot of herself, and so we weren't seeing it either. And that was kind of the point.
  3. So Trixie has said in interviews that her make-up is based on how vintage Barbie dolls were painted. They had to paint the features really large and exaggerated so kids could actually see the faces on these little tiny doll heads. I really like Trixie's make-up because it signals to you right off the bat that this is a queen who doesn't take herself too seriously. But I get that it it's not for everyone.
  4. Was anyone else surprised not to see Heather or Valencia at all this episode? Heather in particular is way more affected by Rebecca's leaving than Maya or Jim, so I wasn't expecting that they would give the secondary office characters so much screen time in the immediate aftermath. Maybe they just wanted the non-Rebecca plot to be light and fun since the Rebecca one was so dark?
  5. One of my favorite things about this show is that you're never sure when you can safely suspend your disbelief and when you can't. Sometimes an absurd action is just a wacky sitcom joke like you'd expect; other times it's revealed to be a symptom of a serious issue. So we'll have to see how they handle the trackers (and the rest of Paula's stalky/obsessive behavior from season 1).
  6. Was anyone else expecting Rebecca's rock bottom to be more shocking and troubling? After the serious stuff they revealed in the finale and the escalating intensity of this episode up to that point, I was bracing myself for something really upsetting. Don't get me wrong; sleeping with your ex's dad is super ill-advised (and gross), but I'm kind of glad they didn't have her do something more self-destructive. Or maybe that wasn't actually her Rock Bottom? Not sure if someone's already asked this, but: assuming Rebecca comes back to West Covina and tries to leave Josh alone for real this time, how do you think the writers'll keep Josh on the show? If Rebecca's not stalking and/or dating him, it seems like it'd be hard to keep him involved in the central plot. Or maybe he'll be a more peripheral character going forward? Just someone who's there to listen to WhiJo and Hector's problems? Or maybe they'll make him go a little crazy and have his own story arc, even if it's basically isolated from Rebecca's? What do y'all think?
  7. I wonder if the show's ever going to give us more backstory on Josh's time in New York. The more we learn about him, the more out of character a cross-country move without any of his friends or girlfriend looks. And after watching him join the priesthood in response to the wedding pressure/anxiety, I almost suspect the writers are gonna make the NY move his way of escaping some other majorly stressful event.
  8. "But to get serious, I'm worried that the level of queens this season has dipped back down to season seven levels. Sure there were some stellar gems in seven, particularly Katya and Trixie (personal taste), but I desperately hope the mediocrity doesn't rise to the top again." Yeah, that was my reaction after watching these, too. The S9 queens generally seem professional and polished, and a few of them said things that impressed me. But I've watched the interviews twice now, and nobody's really distinguished herself. I went back and watched the S8 MTQs, and there's just so much more charisma and intrigue there. I wish they'd saved Laila or Dax or Robbie for this season.
  9. I love how Rebecca's dad calls his own daughter crazy and then stalks off disgustedly WITH THE MONEY SHE JUST GAVE HIM. That's some master's-level dirtbaggery. I don't love how unbalanced Darryl and WhiJo's relationship is. White Josh seems perfectly happy to be dating Darryl, but he seems like he'd be just as happy to be single. I'm not explaining this well, but I just don't get the impression that White Josh is as nearly as into Darryl as Darryl is into him. Darryl deserves someone who's like...excited about him.
  10. Does anyone think Rebecca and Josh might actually end up married in two weeks? Up until this episode, I took it as a given that they'd either break up before the wedding, or one of them would leave the other at the altar. But the show's piling on so many obvious hints that it's all going to fall apart...I almost think they're trying to surprise us. Maybe they'll be married for one miserable year, and Rebecca will finally be out of delusions and have to get serious about therapy at the end of season 3.
  11. The cliche'd elevator contrivance actually didn't bug me that much (you can't really watch this show without enjoying stupid rom-com tropes at least a little), and neither did the auto tune. What did bother me was that Nathaniel was so casual about propositioning a direct report out of nowhere. The way they've drawn that character so far is ruthlessly professional and rule-abiding, so it was hard for me to believe he would just commit a serious HR indiscretion like that so lightly. There should've been at least a couple episodes with him frantically trying to exercise out his Becks-boner on the treadmill or something like that. I can't just suddenly accept that he's a rakish bad boy instead of an uptight daddy's boy. I sort of liked the Daryl/Paula story line, but the song at the end made me really sad. Your best friend can't just be a super-cool person you admire a whole bunch. Otherwise, my best friends would be Bob the Drag Queen and Joni Mitchell. A best friend is someone who wants to listen to all of your bullshit opinions and dumb anecdotes as much you want to listen to theirs. Daryl deserves that. I want to carry Santa Anna Winds guy around in my pocket and have him do his stupid doo-w** dance moves whenever I'm bummed out.
