  1. Great episode. I do question the why Jack surrendered so easily, also I highly doubt a ship's captain outside of a Star Trek episode would ever leave the ship on a raid in RL. Once the redcoats came streaming out of the hold, the raiders could have easily jumped ship and allowed BB's ship to blow the crap out of it. There also seems to be far too many redcoats hiding on the captured ship, more than could fit? I wonder how a real crew would react knowing that they were to be sacrificed for the trap? In the end, they kill 'Mario Batali' and why not. :D Then I tell myself it's just a TV show and I should really just relax. I think the Berringer character could/should have been given a little more depth and back story before doing him in, but it's back to the restaurant for him (I know it's not really Mario, but they do look alike)
  2. The book gives more detail to Dresden and his interaction with Johnson and Holden. Miller knew that Dresden was about to get away with everything and be allowed to continue if not stopped by him. Once the dirty deal was made, the whole assault and all those who died in it would have been made pointless. Miller had that one opportunity to remove one of those responsible for the horror he had witnessed on Eros, and he took it. In the book, Dresden is more of a smarmy politically connected operative than the scientist he's portrayed as in the series. I also think the actor portraying him was miscast.
  3. The 'new' Hoffman mine "was providing good gold till the wash plant broke"? Huh? Why did they stop mining 2 years ago if it was good ground? Only the Hoffmans are capable of replacing that spray bar? 'Sorry honey, I'm shutting the mine down and working at McDonalds till a TV show comes around and fixes the wash plant'? Tony bought and rebuilt a tug and barge that he can't use, then bought and rebuilt a power barge to replace them...that he can't use because he can't find a captain. So he rents a power barge with a captain? That's efficient use of company resources and funds. Parker is now set up for the 'heroic' and chancy move to new pay that will save his season. How much did DC pay the mechanic to act the fool? The script is getting too easy to predict. Maybe it's time for DC's writers to mix things up? Add in a murder mystery into this whole web of deceit? Have Parker disappear, then we suspect Jack or Tony's wife? Only to find Parker alive on Oak Island. How did he get there? Now Todd's missing. Quick, check out all the area church's........fried chicken. How about a 'Superstars' type competition between teams from Gold Rush, Bearing Sea Gold and The Curse of Oak Island? Or an old-timey variety show With Todd and Parker as the comedic hosts. Jack could be the musical guest and sing hymns, Rick could rap.
  4. In my town people go ballistic if someone tries to build a cell tower or open another fast food place, I can only imagine what they would do if someone tried to dig a 50' hole nearby.
  5. How many "horsepowers" does a Labradog have? :D
  6. I'm reading the books and am up to Cibola Burn currently. I also binge re-watched the series on Amazon Prime. I've never been more ready for a new TV show season in my life! :D
  7. You did hear it and they did contradict themselves from previous episodes. Besides the debunked 1970's era "microwaves cook from the inside" info? I've been using the microwave as a potato ''pre-cooker for decades and it's been advised that way on ATK many times. A few minutes nuke and a 15min bake yields a perfectly cooked potato with crisp skin and fluffy insides. Trying to completely "bake" a potato in the microwave yields either a grossly overcooked exterior with a done interior or a mediocre outside with a hard center. More than enough proof that the microwave does not cook from the inside. It's also a great way to start roasted potato's (and many other root vegetables) so they will cook at the same time as a protein or other veg without burning.
  8. I'm still missing a 'Chris' like element. Both Julia and Bridget are forced and phony as hosts and at this point, I don't see that improving. They are particularly annoying when together as it feels like they echo each others' phoney. Though I've liked them both in the past, I now much prefer segments with other chef instructors like Elle, even though the baked potato "recipe' was more appropriate to a 'letter to editor' fill segment ("how come my baked potatoes aren't crispy outside?"). The $180 garbage can recommendation has to be one if not the most absurd equipment tests they've ever done. Maybe now that Jack is the boss, he's making more $$$ and it's affecting his judgment? The kind of person that could afford a $180 'can' probably has one built into the kitchen cabinetry. At the end of the day, it's a show based on tested working recipes and that hasn't changed, but it's a little less enjoyable than it was with Chris there(for me). It's still a long way off from the average saccharine celebrity based cooking shows with their questionable recipes common on FN and PBS and that I no longer pay any attention to. As for what the instructors wear or their hair style or who they even are? I don't care a whole lot as long as they are able to convey the information I want without distraction. A significant number of dishes I make are based on those from this show.
  9. Chefs and their staff have a whole lot of vices. It's explained in 'Kitchen Confidential' and in knowing more than a few people in the industry, confirmed by my own experience. Drugs, alcohol abuse, smoking and general thievery are very common. Heck, they tattoo and pierce more than sailors and hipsters combined. It comes with the territory and is also why they're so much fun to hang out with. Want to know why a good steak house meal costs so much? Half the steak goes out the back door regardless of how much security ownership puts in place. It's a good reason right there to befriend a chef! Particularly in a raw preparation!
  10. I don't think the fines and inevitable lawsuits that the Hoffman's (Freddy?) will receive were factored into the total worth of the gold haul. It looks likely that the only reason they were able to get any gold from this old and played out mine was to expand it past its regulated boundaries by making new equipment landings and mining the previous landings. Trying for the "we didn't cut down trees to mine, just to park" defense? Registering it as a new mine so they can argue that they don't have the restrictions of that 'old' mine? There may be some good gold there, but it isn't a very big area so it would seem it would run out fast. Possibly the reason for the rumors that Todd and crew were only there a couple of weeks? http://starcasm.net/archives/363143 There's a whole lot of wrong here. If you watch the show, you can see homes not far away from the mine through the trees and it's bounded by a highway on the other side, probably why there are restrictions.
  11. http://www.thenational.ae/arts-life/television/will-matt-leblancs-top-gear-ever-emulate-the-success-of-the-grand-tour I am looking forward to the next GT series, not so much for TG. I don't know why the BBC is so infatuated with LeBlanc? They were right to get rid of Evans, and 'promoting' Harris and Reid is a good move, but I think Matt has no place on what has always been a British show.
  12. Jamie, regardless of how much farther he goes in the competition has already won both as a chef and a person. Emily OTH would have been better served if she had bowed out earlier before she demonstrated her poor decision making and palate. I don't know what can be done about the palate, but she appeared too young and unseasoned for this show. For Jamie, things have gotten a whole lot tougher. There's no weakness left and he will be facing chefs that are much stronger than the ones he has defeated in LCK moving forward.
