  1. You must not be from the south. I know Kentucky isn't technically the south but I grew up in Louisville and we share the same values. Black people in the south NEVER back talk mamma, EVER, regardless of age. If you remember, when he first told his mom the news about Miriam, she said "Patrick", he IMMEDIATELY replied "ma'am". So, Patrick putting mamma in her place will never happen. Also, I can't say she was out of line. All she knew was that her son had gone to Paris to meet this girl that he was in love with and got his heart broken. I have no problem with her reaction given the fact that Miriam could have told him about her boyfriend without letting him go to Paris first. She is smart enough to know what Patrick's intentions were. She lead him on by simply allowing him to continue believing that he had a chance and no black southern mamma is gonna like her baby getting hurt, nor is she going to be quiet about her opinion on the matter
