There’s also one by a company called Native who’s commercial with a woman who’s half some type of horse creature airs constantly on Hulu.  I can’t wait until these all go away.

Ew.  I have yet to see that one.  Native is not a brand of deodorant I would ever buy.  I will not do "natural" deodorants.  I live in the South and I glisten 6 months out of the year.

I've seen commercials for Lume, Secret, Dove, and Old Spice advertising whole body deodorant.

Which means neither Proctor and Gamble nor Unilever were able to secure a deal to purchase Lume/Mando.  So now we get 3 different companies shilling similar products.  I'm sure there either is or will be a Dove for Men (TM) whole body deodorant as well.

Or it was a mod with an alt account. I was once banned shortly after another poster suggested I like more posts.  I politely told her I didn't like any posts and to not take it personally.  I now realize she was most likely a mod in disguise. There were lots of things going on behind the scenes most of us were not privy to.  One particular thread I post on would have what appeared to be a new poster swoop in and be deliberately antagonistic and start arguments and then disappear.  And then a couple months later another new poster and rinse and repeat.  With what I know now some people behind the scenes for their own reasons were sowing dissent on multiple threads. So the past few months have been welcome change from all that.

That was one thing I had no idea was going on until late last year.  In a now sunsetted forum, there were accounts that were swooping in upvoting rather hateful comments and leaving some as well that were just odd.  Accounts made back in 2014-2017ish that never posted anything and never reacted to anything before.  It made no sense for accounts that were barely active to just show up out of nowhere.  Mod alts is the only thing that makes sense.

Yeah, a mod. with an alt. account - that thought crossed my mind too.  I have a suspicious mind.  I have thought that before about other posters as well.  I got the impression from that mod. I was writing to via email that there was a lot going on behind the scenes and it could be very political.  They didn't want to divulge any of the specifics but I got that impression so I had to take their word for it that there was nothing they could do to help me.

BTW, that person stepped down as a mod. a few months later and then a year or so after that left the board.  If they resubbed under another screen name I have never been able to identify them.  They used to talk about certain subjects and post on certain threads so it would have been hard for them to change all that to remain anonymous.  I think in their case they just got disgusted for their own reasons and left for good.

I also found out a couple of months ago that the old community manager's daughter was also a mod on here.  If the mod that you crossed for whatever reason was her, then you had no recourse.

The biggest obstacle for me is that, unlike the Matt Damon movie, I feel no sympathy for this Tom Ripley.  This Ripley gives off a stalker/sociopath vibe. Not sure if that is intentional, but all my sympathies are with his unwitting victims.

Are we supposed to feel sympathy for Tom Ripley?  I did not get the impression that the creators of this expect us to.  Tom is a criminal, and we see that in the first episode.  He's committing mail fraud before conning the senior Greenleafs for an all-expenses paid trip to Italy.  And I'm not getting any "eat the rich" commentary out of the writing, directing or acting though I am not too concerned with Dickie's wellbeing.  But, Dickie is a archetypical character that I normally despise, the rich dilettante.  And I am finding Johnny Flynn to be an effective dilettante.  Him being in his late 30s makes the character work.  I don't find the actors and characters being older a minus here.  Aging them up also gives insight into why Tom is as desperate as he is.

Thanks for posting this!  I am looking forward to it.  I hope they don't screw it up.  I remember so looking forward to "Three Pines" and the adaptation of the book series was fairly abysmal.

I just finished reading C.J. Sansom's Tombland.  I enjoyed it overall, even if I thought it was a bit too long.  While I appreciate historical detail, I do feel like some of the details about Kett's Rebellion could have been shortened.

I know that Sansom has had some health issues.  But on the internet there is a description of an upcoming book 8, Ratcliff, and a small summary.  I can't find any further information or whether this book is still in progress or if his health issues have precluded it.

I also just finished Peril at the Exposition by Nev March.  This is book 2 in a series that started with "Murder in Old Bombay".  This time, the couple Jim and Diana have gotten married and moved to America.  They were in Boston when Jim (who is working as a spy/operative/detective or something) gets sent to Chicago to investigate the disappearance of another agent and the death of a Pinkerton detective.  The 1893 World's Columbian Exposition is occuring there.  Jim disappears and Diana goes to find him.

I absolutely hated the first book in this series.  HATED.  It was too much romance and too little mystery.  This book wasn't quite so hateable, but I found it particularly boring.  For a book with its setting as the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, I was amazed at how little of the fair was incorporated.  Characters visit briefly and there are throwaway descriptions, but that's about it.

I really thought this book was going to be a mystery set during the World's Fair and that we would get lots of descriptions of the various booths and exhibits.  Instead, the book seemed to mainly be about an anarchist plot involving bombs that just happened to have the fair in the background.  Really disappointing.  The book was also way too long and could have used an editor.

The third book in this series is set on a cruise ship.  I really want to read it and like it but given the track record of this author, I am prepared to be disappointed.

It's James Patterson, I doubt he had anything to do with this book besides put his name on it and take a large percentage of the actual author's profits.  I'm kind of over James Patterson and his claim that he is the "World's Most Popular Storyteller" when he doesn't write 95% of the books that he takes credit for.  The co-author writes the entire book and yet he gets top billing.

Why pretend?  Why can't he have his own pubishing house where the authors publish the books as the sole author but they are from "the James Patterson Publishing House".  Like a stamp of approval by him, like Oprah's Book Club or Reese's club or whatever.  It just kind of disgusts me how he takes credit for all these books that he doesn't write.

I do have to defend James here as a librarian.  Some of the titles with co-authors are part of on-going series where James did write the first few books.  If the books were to be published under the co-author's name only, then they would get shelved by that author's last name, and we would end up with a series split on multiple shelves across the fiction section.  It is easier for us and our patrons for all of the books to be in the James Patterson section.  I know the cataloging software my library uses does link books in a series on the public facing part, but not all software does this.  It would be hell for the library staff to have to keep a list of all the co-authors for each James Patterson series to help patrons find the next book.

It isn't necessarily done because James Patterson is taking credit for books he didn't write, but for the ease of people finding the next book in a series.  There are a lot of dead authors who's series still continue that are published under the dead author's name for the same reason.  Stuart Woods, Vince Flynn, Clive Cussler, Robert B. Parker, Robert Jordan, J.R.R. Tolkien, Frank Herbert, etc.

Apparently favoritetism was at play.  The luck of the draw.  Who knows?  Some posters get so insulted they would never come back no matter what.

There was definitely some favoritism going on because I know of a couple of posters on their third account here, and others who disappeared after only one.  You could also appeal some warning points.  It just depended on what you supposedly did to warrant it, which forum it happened in, and which mod issued it.

Well, he has recently become a multi-millionaire, so maybe a lot of girls think they can find a deep spiritual connection that leads to an idyllic contentment

A down to earth millionaire who's easy on the eyes and has a busy job meaning my introverted ass would get many an evening to stay at home reading books, I'd hit that.  My student loans would get paid off, we'd have enough to afford a maid if we continued to live modestly.  I'm not really seeing a downside.  Unless he wants kids.

  8. I might could handle the OTT Benson worship if the writers did not throw logic out the window in service of it.  That damn lock of hair in that damn leather pouch.  As soon as Maddie mentioned it, why did Carisi not get a warrant to procure it as evidence?  I know the answer to that, because it needed to be in that pouch on George's (it was George, right.  This episode is not worth looking that up) neck for that hotel room hostage situation so Benson could save the day yet again.

  9. I can speak from experience and say Tupperware was not a MLM in the 80s and 90s.  My mom sold it during that time, and she did make money.  Enough money in fact to my family in our home while my dad was out of work for two years.  The power was never cut, we had food on the table, and the bank never foreclosed.  I know my grandmother did occasionally give my mom money during that time and we did received some help from our church, but that was to assist and not something that happened consistently.  The buy-in was low and she was never forced to buy product with the money she made.  There also was not any pyramid structure in place.  There were managers who had their own group of salespeople, but they were not taking a big percentage of their sales.  It was more of a mentoring position

So I learned that The House in the Cerulean Sea will get a sequel in September. I would be fine with it being a stand-alone book, but I am also now looking forward to this sequel.

But considering I have found out by randomly looking into the author's books at Goodreads, it makes me think: do you know any good website for book news and upcoming releases? When it comes to books that I know are part of the series, I can keep track of what I am looking forward to, but if something supposedly stand-alone gets a sequel, I don't really know how to find out about it other than having luck or regularly checking every author's website.

(Please don't suggest social media though, especially "Booktok", I would rather not know anything than support fucking Tiktok.)

There is a British website called Fantastic Fiction that compiles a lot of series and includes upcoming books, but the release dates are for the UK. Depending on what kind of books you are interested in, there's sites like The Millions that does book previews for each quarter.  There are also some publishing imprints that will email upcoming books.  Author website, newsletter, or social media accounts is really the best way to keep up with new releases.  Each author is different in how they inform their readers of upcoming books.

My peeve this week: I DVR'd the first 6 episodes of a new show that premiered the night of the Superbowl. I started watching them this past Sunday, unfortunately the game went into overtime and even though I extended the time to record, I am missing the last 15 mins of the episode. Ok, fine, I'll catch it in the reruns or stream it. I go on to the next 5 episodes, only 2 of them were complete, the other 3 were also overrun by the prior program, ARGH! I have now set up to record the show that follows in hopes of getting a complete episode going forward. 😒

That's CBS for you.  They cannot for the life of them figure out how to plan a schedule that includes sporting events.  Someone in the Chit Chat thread posted a link to a story about how the Billy Joel concert got pre-empted for the news on Sunday night in some areas.  Because their coverage of the Masters went over.

While I'm prepared to believe there's a thousand episodes of NCIS shows now, I have watched none of them. I couldn't tell you the content of a single episode.

I'm not slamming the fans or anything like that, it's just odd to realise that for something apparently popular enough to go this long, I know nothing about it.

I rarely watch anything on CBS.  Out of all of the American networks, I feel they are the ones who rely upon focus groups the most.  There's rarely any risk or experimentation in their lineup.  They end up airing the blandest content that appeals to the most people.  I'm not surprised to find out they have a show that has aired 1,000 episodes.

Anyone know a surefire method of removing gel nail polish, or must I go back to the salon? This is only the 2nd time I've gotten a gel manicure and the 1st time, I just let it gradually peel off. Nail polish remover doesn't work. The manicure is lasting pretty well; it's been 3 weeks now. If it weren't for the fact that my right index finger is totally devoid of polish, I'd leave it be.  I won't get another gel manicure until right before Mother's Day.

You need a few supplies to take the gel off--a file or emery board, acetone, cotton squares or balls, aluminum foil, and a metal cuticle stick.  Use the emery board or file to buff out the shine on the polish and break up the top layer of polish.  Soak a cotton pad in acetone and place it on the nail, wrap it up in foil, and wait 20ish minutes for the acetone soak down to your nail.  Use the cuticle pusher to gently remove the polish.

Wow. I just noticed it’s been awhile since someone asked the question. I hope it’s ok that I do.

Last night I lost all cable and internet so needed to find something to do. I read, although I thought about starting a jigsaw puzzle. What hobby do you like that doesn’t require electronics?

I would tackle that pile of library books in my bedroom or maybe read one of the hundreds of books I have downloaded on my Kindle.  If the book is good enough, I won't miss my internet.  If I am not in the mood to read, then go out and grab a beverage or two at my local microbrewery or just go to bed.  It really depends on when I lost my internet.

  15. I noped out of this episode after that extended intro.  The acting, the writing, the directing were all too painful to watch.  I did not buy Noah as a tween when he was coming off as some sheltered 6 year old.  And that dialog made it seem like Benson has left Noah in the dark about a lot stuff that he should be able to handle developmentally.

I did catch Carisi mention the upcoming trial for Maddie's abductor.  As much as I want to see him in a courtroom and see all the dangling threads from that case get resolved (who provided that picture of Maddie to the sex doll company), I don't know if I actually want to see it and how Benson will react.

Not to mention the horrible trolls who will make fun of the child's appearance especially as the child goes through those awkward teenage years.

Honestly, I do not care one whit about what celebrity children look like, I really don't care at all about what celebrities do in their personal life. Acting is their job, I don't feel entitled to know anything about their families, homes, the car they drive or how they spend their time off.

There's also the trolls who start countdown clocks when they find the teenager in question hot.  Some days I think the internet was a mistake.

This isn’t the first retelling that had Huck be biracial/unwittingly passing, and it checks, but having Jim turn out to be his bio dad? Did not see that coming.

I listened to the audio of this over the weekend, and I agree the hype is real.  Out of the 5 Percival Everett books I have read I would rank this at #2 right behind The Trees.

Which is easy for me to say, because we don't have a lot of bugs here like in some regions, so I don't have much to contend with.

Please try to remember that spiders are our friends.

Yes, they eat other bugs.  I allow the spiders who hang out on my bathroom ceiling to continue hanging out on my bathroom ceiling.  Now if one is hanging out a bit lower in the shower/tub when I need to use it, then it's a different story.

  20. I had a thought while the show is dredging up Olivia's past, Is this going to be Marishka's last season and they just have not announced it yet?  That would explain these trips down memory lane and the St. Olivia voiceover in episode one.  Would also explain why there's another captain in the squad room.
