  1. I'm reminded of what Olyvia Harrison (George Harrison's widow) said when asked what the secret was to her successful marriage. She said, "You just don't split up. You just don't get divorced." Much like a 12 Step program where the goal is to stay of drugs and alcohol "Just for Today", if you can just stick your marriage out each day and refuse to split up on that day, you will have a successful marriage because you will never split up. Very simple minded. But also very profound. I can understand why George loved her.
  2. Did you see Jonah Hill in War Dogs? That insane laugh of his ... I can't really find the words to describe how repulsive I found that. I am determined never to watch anything else he is in. But Scarlett Johansson? love her. I think she is one of the most attractive ladies in this world.
  3. I've only watched half of it so far (today has been an exhausting day). I loved the way it opened with all kinds of people in Paris hammering out a song by pounding on tools or cobblers beating on the shoes they were repairing - but all of them in unison - pounding out a beat. That was special. I also loved the song, "Isn't it Romantic" - the same song from the 1950's film Sabrina. Beautiful song. I'll try to watch the rest of it soon. I had no idea Jeanette McDonald was so beautiful. No wonder she became a star. She also had a lot of acting talent and that didn't hurt either. Thank you for turning me on to this movie. And to Popples: White Heat encapsulates everything great about gangster movies from the 1940's and 1950's. I'm glad to see you liked it.
  4. Does that make sense to you? She is bitter because he broke off with her because of his personal family problems? That just makes no sense to me. If true, how would his problems with his family that have anything to do with Figgy? Seems to me that someone is lying here. Ever hear of Occam's Razor? My guess would be the truth is probably the simplest possible explanation and that would be that Taylor already had a relationship with some lady and that she was pregnant at the time he met Figgy. Seems only natural that Figgs would be very angry or hurt when she found this out. Seems like Taylor behaved like a child who had a full stomach but then saw a piece of cake and decided that he could eat that cake and have it too. It's one thing to behave like a goof. But when one's goofy behavior will obviously be very hurtful to someone else, there is just no excuse. What a fool! The fact that Taylor is a so-called "Millenial" does not excuse a thing. Behaving like that marks hims as an "asshole" and a "bastard" and that is the kind of behavior that often causes other people to become so enraged that they go and get a gun and shoot someone. I'm not suggesting that Taylor deserves to be the victim of some extreme violence. But if he did began a love affair with Figgy, while he had a pregnant girlfriend at home and thought he could get away with that or that the consequences wouldn't touch him for a long time, well, the only words that comes to my mind are "stupid" and "despicable". What a prick! What an asshole! If he thought he could get away with that (despite carrying on with Figgy on National TV), then he must also be an incredible freaking imbecile! But we already knew all of that as a result of his food stealing stupidity.
  5. I don't understand why Figgy would be so bitter. Seems to me that a young woman of her age with her looks and personality could have her choice of a million young men - most of whom are far better specimens than Taylor. Could the truth be that she feels publicly shamed? Is most of her bitterness due to having this happened in the public spotlight? I remember that shortly after they met, Figgy talked about Taylor's eyes and how they were the thing that drew her towards him. Is that a shortcoming in her character? I honestly don't know. Or maybe it's very different for people to look at things from the outside than it is to feel what it's like from the inside. I've never understood why it is that so many women who I feel just "have it all" seem to be deeply hurt by things that seem so clearly small and trivial. But these things seem to be devestating to the women they happen to. It's always been a mystery to me. Perhaps I just lack the requisite empathy?
  6. I have to give the Casting Director their due. The casting this season seems to me to be the best I can ever remember. Someone did a great job. Perhaps "luck" also played a big part. Whatever the truth, this cast seems to have just come together in a way that is extremely entertaining.
  7. Ooooh! I never heard of Love Me Tonight before. But I looked it up on IMDB and it looks great. I'll watch it tomorrow. Thank you.
  8. You may be correct - of course. But I see Bret as a very long shot. First of all, luck plays quite a role in determining the winner. So even if it makes sense that one player will likely win, all kinds of "lucky accidents" can intervene and someone will win who seems highly improbable. But why do I say Bret is an unlikely winner? The seed has already been planted that he is a cop. Since that is true, it will be very difficult to stop that seed from growing. Bret seems like a decent sort of man. But he is also kind of a lout. I recall someone quite respected (It wasn't Norm Chomsky but it was someone of his stature) who said that, "Most cops are bullies, thugs and louts". It's not fair to paint all cops with that brush. Some of them are decent people and truly try to help the population. But my experience has been the majority of cops take delight in acting like bullies, thugs and louts. I would point to the latest reward challenge where Bret got as drunk as possible. It's hard to find too much fault with that. I think I might well do the same after living in those conditions for about 3 weeks. But a much bigger reason is that he never really seems to talk or think very much about strategy and - even worse - he never seems to try and influence anyone else. He seems to be content to just be loyal to his original small alliance and hope for the best. That is not a winning behavior. It usually takes a lot more than that to walk away with the million dollars. That kind of behavior strikes me as a very cop-like. If all their brother cops are finding illegal ways to make a little extra money, hardly any cop will stand up and squawk about that. Most will just shut up and go along. Almost no other cop is willing to behave like Serpico and risk great harm to themselves and their families. Bret seems like one of the better cops. It's kind of unfortunate, but I think he will be tarred by the thug-like actions of most other cops. Remember New Orleans and Katrina? Several cops just outright murdered one or more black people and beat others within an inch of their lives. As I recall several of those cops were charged and/or dismissed from the force. But only after a massive public outcry and a huge spotlight was shone on them by the media. We must not ever forget incidents like those. They are with us always. Things like that can happen to any of us (or our loved ones) at the drop of a hat. www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/.../katrina-10-years-later-three-documentaries-to-watch/ Katrina, 10 Years Later: Three Documentaries to Watch | FRONTLINE http://filmingcops.com/city-rallies-behind-huge-athlete-who-challenges-bully-cop-to-mma-fight-cop-chickens-out/ "A long-time resident of the town remarked: “Having lived in or near BM for almost 20 years, I concur that the whole department is corrupt…” One of the cops that residents specifically point to is Officer Tim Walker. Multiple residents have complained that Officer Walker has abused or bullied them to various degrees. http://thefreethoughtproject.com/im-gonna-beat-sht-you-thug-cop-bullies-teen-walking-home-school/ “Keep f**kin’ walkin’, the next time you look me in my fuckin’ eye, I’m gonna beat the sh*t out you. Now get the f**k outta here.” – Philly Cop
  9. I would like to tell you about a number of wonderful documentaries. All of them are about the Life & Times of Muhammed Ali. In particular, my favorite of the bunch is called: I Am Ali (2014) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4008652/?ref_=nm_flmg_slf_4 I was about 14 when Ali won the Heavyweight Boxing Championship (for the first time). I remember that everyone talked about his huge ego and that Sonny Liston would "kill" him in the first round. Mostly I recall the odds were 7 to 1 and people talked about making a great fortune if they bet on Ali and he won this fight. Of course, it seems to me that almost no one would take that bet. Despite being alive at that time and reading most everything I could get my hands on (mostly newspaper articles), I never really understood the important issues of the time and like most other people, I guess I figured he was kind of "crazy". But watching some of the documentaries that were made about him, (there are probably about 12 of them available today), I never really got any appreciation of the man or his abilities. Today, I consider Ali to be not only the greatest boxer of all time, but far more importantly, one of the greatest human beings of all time. Even if you don't know or appreciate most anything about boxing, I think you will truly enjoy this film and will also truly enjoy any other documentaries about Ali. The one thing that I'd like to tell you about is something that I just marvel about today. In the sport of boxing, it seems like most everyone in the world was always focused on just how hard a boxer could hit his opponent. Ali took a very different approach. He figured out that defense was far more important than offense. If he could only find a way to avoid having an opponent hit him, he would win easily. This documentary explains quite a bit about that. I will just tell you a few things here: If a boxer keeps punching his opponent, he expends far more energy than by doing most anything else. It doesn't take long for him to just tire himself out. Ali would get his brother to throw rocks at his head and he would keep moving his body and his head so as to avoid the rocks. I don't know why they didn't use tennis balls instead. So much safer than rocks. But Ali was a genius and so I can't really argue about that decision. In any event, so many of his early fights consisted of him hitting his opponent very seldom. For most of his fights, his main concern was avoiding getting hit by his opponent. The result, in so many of his fights, was that his opponent just tired himself out by punching and punching but missing. Once you understand his strategy, his fights become a work of great beauty and you can appreciate just why he was the greatest boxer of all time. It was so amazing. No one. No one ever before had considered paying more attention to defense than offense. That simple change in tactics resulted in Ali winning almost all of his fights. But the most important thing about Ali was that he taught the world how freedom is our most valuable gift (or right) and that in order to keep our freedom, we must exercise our right to freedom and exercise that right often. People hated Ali for talking like that. They tried to put him in prison. But The Supreme Court of the USA, decided he was right and in a unanimous decision, they struck down all the charges against him and no one ever again tried to put him in prison. One other pseudo documentary that deals with The Supreme Court and how and why they unanimously found in Ali's favor is the following film. I would like to recommend it to you as well: Ali's Greatest Fight (2014) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2061756/ I sincerely hope you might give these two films a try. Regardless of whether or not you know anything about Ali. Regardless of whether or not you know anything about boxing. I think there is an excellent chance you may love these films. I truely do love these films. If you do enjoy them, you can find more by Googling "Films about Muhammed Ali". Good luck and happy viewing!
  10. I cut my cable several years ago and recently I have experienced a few different kinds of problems that seem perhaps, as if they were caused by some of the cable companies in an attempt to make me wish I would undo that decision and that I would re-subscribe (is there any such word?) to cable. I would love to know more about Filmstruck. In particular, I'd love to know just what films are available and whether I can watch them at any time or whether I have to wait until a specific time before I can see them. Thank you very much for posting that link. I would never go back to my cable company again. So many problems. So many bad feelings. But an alternative would just be so very wonderful! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
  11. I agree. Some people have wondered why Sunday has seemed to be almost invisible during this entire season so far. I think you may have answered that question. At least, you certainly answered that to my satisfaction. My guess is TPTB would not be happy letting her "rattle" on air for any length of time. IMHO, that would not be very entertaining and would not be good for ratings. Good post!
  12. You said, "I wonder how he'll go in life in later years?" I asked, "Care to guess what might happen? Care to guess what Figgy might be pissed about?" I have read that Figgy has said she and Taylor are no longer talking and that she was unhappy with him for reasons she didn't want to discuss. I'm sorry if you interpretted this as meaning I was addressing my comments to you personally. I was just trying to respond to your saying, "I wonder how he'll go in life in later years?" I sincerely apologize if you perceived my comments as somehow being something negative about you. I assure you that was not the case. I hope you will forgive me if I caused you any hurt feelings. That was never my intention at all.
  13. Poor old Tayls will be spending a few weeks in Ponderosa with Young Hot Michelle. Care to guess what might happen? Care to guess what Figgy might be pissed about? I'm guessing that if anyone I know ever decides to get married, I'd like to have them watch this season and then tell them to be careful they don't ever marry someone like Tayls because if he has no qualms about cheating his friends out of their food, what are the odds he wouldn't cheat on his wife? I wonder if any woman who has ever seen this season of Survivor would ever be so stupid as to marry Good Old Tayls?
  14. I'd like to recommend two B movies. They are not necessarily great stories. But they represent a kind of hallmark or achievment in these kinds of movies. The first is: It Came From Beneath the Sea (1955). This was one of the first or perhaps one of the best movies by Ray Harryhausen who pioneered stop-action Science Fantasy movies. The second is: Teenagers from Outer Space (1959). This is kind of a goofy picture. But I was 9 years old when I first saw it and it scared the living daylights out of me. It's about a group of aliens who land on Earth and who go around killing people by pointing a kind of ray gun at them. When they pull the trigger, the gun makes a kind of sound like "Whoo whoo whoo" and all that is left of the victim is their skeleton. It's very hokey. But it gave me horrible nightmares for many years and I think many of you may enjoy it.
  15. The best documentary on this subject I have ever seen is, "Deliver Us from Evil (2006)". After seeing this film (in which the Catholic Church went to great lengths to deny, cover up, lie and ignore their damaged parishioners, I decided I would never again have anything to do with the Catholic Church. I would never give them another nickel. I would never leave them anything of value in my will. I think that one of the largest sources of income for the Catholic Church is when people leave them property or money in their wills. (Of course this is just my guess and I may be wrong about that). But, after seeing this film, I hope most people will remove the Catholic Church from their wills. The church behaved worse than almost any criminal. This documentary was unbelievable. Except that it was the truth. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deliver_Us_from_Evil_(2006_film) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oliver_O'Grady Sorry NOWILTORESIST, I didn't see that you had already posted about this film before I did. I apologize.
  16. I saw a wonderful documentary on PBS titled, "Chasing Heroin". It was broadcast in the early part of 2016 and was produced by "Frontline". It's an amazing documentary. I would call it a "must see" for anyone who currently uses most any kind of pain killers - especially Opioids - such as Codeine, Fenatyl (I think), Oxy Contin, Oxy Neo, Oxy Anything and of course Heroin. Among some of the tragic, heartbreaking stories (one of which concerns a 16 year old beautiful girl who was a star baseball (Fastball) pitcher who died from a Heroin overdose and destroyed her entire family. That story will just rip your heart out. It essentially ripped my heart out. If you have any children who you suspect are using pain killers of most any kind, I can't recommend strongly enough that you find a way to let them see this documentary. It is two hours in length and it is one of the most powerful documentaries (maybe even the most powerful ever) I have ever seen.
  17. I just want to go on the record with my prediction the winner will be either Chris or Ken. It's just my opinion. Everyone can have an opinion and they are all usually wrong. Both Chris and Ken have showed some remarkable abilities to stay calm and yet influence other members to turn things around when they were on (or near) the bottom and get what they wanted. That seems like something that game winners are able to do. Both tend to be the strong silent type - until they are threatened with getting booted. Then, they both seem able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Compare that with Figgy, Taylor, Jay & Michele (the Foolish Foursome). They seem able to snatch defeat from just about anything - especially their own jaws - when they open their mouths.
  18. I half expected that Adam would have pulled out his advantage at the TC and then told the group: "This thing may be called an "advantage". But, IMO, it's really just a curse on anyone foolish enough to use it. I'm not going to use it and I will not curse anyone else by giving it to them. Instead, I think it would be best for all of us if I was to just destroy it. Then, I expected he would tear it up and toss it into the fire. I fully expect that if anyone ever uses this kind of advantage, they will get the boot shortly afterwards. IMHO, it is really just a "trap" designed to boot anyone who is foolish enough to use it. There was never any need to predict that whoever would use it would use it to steal a visit from a "loved one". It seems to me that just placing that image into peoples' minds would likely put a serious bullseye on them and would cause people to view them as someone needing to go home ASAP.
  19. Thank you Green. In truth, I was just feeling that Adam's behavior was pretty piss poor. But, had I thought about it more carefully, I just would have remained silent. I often make the mistake of shooting off my mouth before I've thought things through. But I truly do thank you for your constructive comments. Yes indeed.
  20. Thank you Constant Viewer. I don't know how I ever missed Casablanca. Thank you for adding that. I also see some other movies that you added. I don't know how I missed Roman Holiday, If you liked Bringing up Baby, I'd like to recommend, "The Lady Eve". It's a wonderful comedy. Not exactly "screwball". But I've always loved Barbara Stanwyck and Henry Fonda was at his best in this one. One of the main reasons I started this thread was so that people could learn about new films they might enjoy. I see a few new films (new to me anyway) that I am looking forward to trying. I want to thank you for that. I hope more people will post some of their favorite films. IMHO, the best thing about this kind of forum is that it's a great way for people to learn about new things they will likely enjoy.
  21. How about a minor personality disorder then?
