I want to comment on whatever that thing was that Yo was doing with her chiropractor: holding a bottle or jar of a substance to her chest while she held her other arm out, and the chiro pressed on it to see if she still needed to take the stuff.  A few of you commented on this awhile ago, but is there a proper term for it?

Also, at one point the chiro told Yo that she didn't need to take some substance anymore. A baffled and wistful Yo said, "Really? But it comes all the way from Hungary." I was gobsmacked. So that's Yo's criterion for gauging the efficacy of a substance: if it's imported all the way from some exotic place. Yo probably thinks that some plain old locally grown stuff isn't good enough to treat her very special condition that she'll be writing about in her book.

Applied kinesiology (AK) or muscle strength testing: http://www.quackwatch.com/01QuackeryRelatedTopics/Tests/ak.html

    Quote

Applied kinesiology (AK) is the term most commonly used to identify a pseudoscientific system of muscle-testing and therapy. It was initiated in 1964 by George J. Goodheart, Jr., D.C. (1918-2008) and has become quite elaborate. Its basic notion is that every organ dysfunction is accompanied by a specific muscle weakness, which enables diseases to be diagnosed through muscle-testing procedures.

AK proponents claim that nutritional deficiencies, allergies, and other adverse reactions to foods or nutrients can be detected by having the patient chew or suck on these items or by placing them on the tongue so that the patient salivates. Some practitioners advise that the test material merely be held in the patient's hand or placed on another part of the body. A few even perform "surrogate testing" in which the arm strength of a parent is tested to determine problems in a child held by the parent.

The concepts of applied kinesiology do not conform to scientific facts about the causes or treatment of disease. Controlled studies have found no difference between the results with test substances and with placebos. Differences from one test to another may be due to suggestibility, distraction, variations in the amount of force or leverage involved, and/or muscle fatigue.

  2. It's age-appropriate gifting: Pandora got the down payment on a furnished house for her 30th birthday and 5th wedding anniversary. Max got a role on Vanderpump Rules, the opportunity to work on a SUR soundtrack (he plays guitar), a Jeep, and increased responsibility at his parents' restaurants.

On RHBH, Ken said he wanted to open a new restaurant so Max could manage it. On VPR, Lisa and Ken were very concerned about the negative influence  on Max of the other cast members—especially James Kennedy.

Why do I keep seeing tributes to Michael Douglas' life? Below, here, on p.tv. He isn't dead.

Ugh, those clickbaity "promoted stories"! "These celebrities died without anyone knowing" and "30 child actors who lost their lives way too soon"—each with photos of people who are still living.

When Nina dropped her cap under the table, as she was bending down I said to my husband, "oh look, here's some dirt from Pocky's shoe that will be so rare and specific that it will lead me to the exact plot of land that his cabin fortress is located on!"

This show alternates between making things so ridiculously easy and ridiculously hard.  I don't get it.

    I thought the same—very Bones.

How did I miss seeing  Lisa gave Pandy a house stuff? Where are y'all seeing it?

Lisa and Ken gifted her daughter and her husband Jason Sabo with the down payment on a fully furnished home.

But the house isn't completely a gift. "This was a gift to both of them to celebrate 5 years of marriage and both of their 30th birthdays," Lisa said. "But they do now have a mortgage, so this is a gift that definitely comes with responsibilities!"

This season, Ken wanted to open a new restaurant so Max could run it.

I don't think we're losing Norma just yet.  She'll probably be revived and take the blame for the accident, saying that she was trying to kill herself and thought Norman wasn't at home, or some such nonsense.  What I could read of her letter to Alex might even be considered a suicide note.

I just wonder what the show would look like next season if Norma really is dead.

If Norma is dead, Vera would still be on the show as "Mother." As Norma said this episode, she and Norman are two parts of the same person.

The note with the wedding ring said, "I will always love you no matter what. I'm truly sorry. Love, Norma."

What was that show last year about a doctor being blackmailed by thugs that ended with a cliffhanger? It didn't get renewed and I don't think this one will either. Sloppy writing, especially this episode.

    Complications?  http://m.imdb.com/title/tt3410350/  https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Complications_(TV_series)

I'm not sure, as I gave up on that show pretty quickly—despite being a fan of Jason O'Mara. (I only started watching this show because of Rupert Graves.)

Maybe ABC wanted this show to be its version of Broadchurch (a whodunnit in a small town) or American Crime (with Andrew McCarthy rather than Timothy Hutton). But the writing's subpar.

Having Ben's mom suddenly appear was just too coincidental.

But it wasn't a coincidence. In the parking lot, Bridey told someone on the phone (probably her editor) that she had landed Ben's mother. Just like with Danny at the bar.

I didn't make it past 30 minutes. Too much about the new detective. Glad she caught the killer.

This one felt padded. As soon as they showed Annie's diary saying, "I lied to my friends about being p[regnant]," I knew the alleged father did it.

We really, really need to get it through to young girls that you can't make the boy you love, love you back by getting pregnant by him, much less by pretending you're pregnant. He'll just hate you for trapping him.

I agree! Unfortunately, women of all ages make this mistake.

    Here's the episode description:

A teenage girl is murdered at a scenic spot on a Utah river. The case almost goes cold until a hairdresser turned detective, with the help of the victim's determined mom, finds the truth. Dennis Murphy reports Friday May 6 at 9:30/8:30c.

My ice cream life is super tame compared to all of yours. Grape nuts is a flavor?! I thought it was just a cereal. I have two tubs of locally-produced mint chocolate chip. If my throat weren't still sore, I'd be in it by now.

Grape-Nuts ice cream reminds me of my mom's Grape-Nuts pudding. (Like rice pudding.) And I get to delude myself that it's health food!

Maybe it's a regional flavor? I'm in New England, and only see it at ice cream parlors—never in stores.

It is ironic, but quality isn't a gender question. Sadly Messer's style is soapy, she thinks only a gun can make a woman powerful and only explosions bring shock to the table. She is trying to do something between Alias and 24 with a lot of sugar on it, and I didn't follow any of those shows and it's not the reason I started to follow CM.

    That's Old People Ice Cream : )

I love old people food: picked beets, Welsh rarebit, boiled eggs, Indian pudding, oatmeal, ribbon candy…

Speaking of ice cream, when I eat Häagen Dazs single-serving cups I like to pretend I'm a giant eating an entire pint.

What brands? I've been meaning to try some new kinds. There's a sour cream and dark cherry ice cream at my work cafeteria  that is intriguing. Also a bramble berry crisp ice cream that sounds refreshing.

My favorite ice cream flavor is Grape-Nuts. (I get it at my local ice cream parlor.) I also like wee sandwiches with vanilla Häagen Dazs and Pillsbury crescent rolls.

You might get some brand &/or flavor ideas in the Everything Else > Food > Ice Cream thread:

That's my problem: I've never not felt awkward when being approached. It's like I feel sympathy for the other person for trying, while also getting a fat head and thinking "oh nice try, but I'm too classy for this", LOL. But maybe that's EVERYONE's natural response.

    Is it?

Nope. Think more kindly of others + more humbly of oneself.

It needn't be stalkerish or player like, if you're sincere and it isn't actually a pick up line—in other words if you're just making conversation, most (non-dickish) people will respond to you in a way that leaves your dignity intact, whatever the result.

In your head you could turn "I'm too classy" into "thank you for the compliment, I'm flattered."

@ZaldamoWilder said it better than I.

This new Murder U show has me wondering if my alma mater will be featured in two different episodes or combined into one (because the cases will be featured on there, no doubt). End of my freshman year, two girls were murdered. One was strangled in her dorm room by her stalker and another was shot by her ex-boyfriend in front of her apartment.

Upcoming episodes are about University of Maryland, Eastern Illinois University, and University of Florida: http://tvseriesfinale.com/tv-show/murder-u-id-true-campus-crime-series-debuts-april/

I have  been trying to think of currently airing shows that really showcase strong female friendships.  Not just lip service but shows that really display it over time.  Off the top of my head the only ones I could think of was Playing House (which I think is woefully underrated) and Rebecca & Paula from Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (a little dysfunctional but still works), Mistresses.  I suppose Girls, but I don't watch that so I couldn't speak to it and possibly Broad City (again I don't watch it, but it feels like it should fit).  I feel like there should be more.

There is Rizzoli and Isles, although a lot of people seemed to want them to be lesbians though they aren't.  Their friendship has been genuine, and supportive, which is one of the reasons I always liked the show.

Call the Midwife also has many female friendships.  Most of the cast is women.

Broad City definitely showcases strong female friendships, and might actually be my favorite on-screen depictions of friendship ever.

You're right about having to think about it to come up with examples though.  To add to your list, I'd put Liv and Peyton from iZombie, and Taystee and Poussey from Orange is the New Black.

I would say Jessica Jones has a really strong female friendship at its core.  It is my favorite thing about the show.

Shows from the UK are better at depicting strong female friendships:

    • The Bletchley Circle
    • The Great British Baking Show
    • Doll & Em
    • Home Fires
    • Last Tango in Halifax
    • Scott & Bailey
