  1. I got a debit card as a reward for participating i something and it clearly says you can use it like any Visa card but isn't redeemable for cash at an ATM. Well, Amazon wouldn't recognize it and I've had trouble using other temporary debit cards like this in the past. So it really isn't possible to use it like any other Visa card. Wankers.

  2. I was just talking to a friend about this last night. When I was in Ontario 10/29, people were wearing paper poppies and there was a man in uniform outside Walmart with a basket of them. I vaguely recall paper poppies from my childhood but haven't seen any in decades, except on UK TV shows. My friend doesn't remember ever seeing them in real life. She grew up near NYC, I'm from the other end of the state. Maybe proximity to Canada was the difference, WWI being a much bigger deal for commonwealth countries than the U.S.

  3. I spent last weekend visiting family and, while I'm glad to have seen them and to have met my 2 grandnephews for the first time (and stock up on sponge candy and other local delicacies), I couldn't wait to get home. One sister had Covid--which she didn't know until the second day--and the children had runny noses and loud voices...yikes.

Now that the toll barriers are gone and 3/4 of the rest stops on the Thruway are closed for renovations (no restrooms! For miles and miles!), and the lack of troopers and construction, I made really good time both ways.

You know...The Massachusetts turnpike has maybe two signs between Springfield and the NYS state line letting you know they'll mail you the toll bill if you don't have EZPass. New York has like 5 signs around every exit and more in between telling you to call the number on the sign or else. And when you call, it's the same as MA--they'll mail you the bill.

  4. My outside light doesn't go on until you're almost at the door...I can't figure out how to extend the motion sensor or get the light to stay on. But there aren't any trick or treaters anyway. Since I've lived here, I think there have only been 2 or 3 years when there were any, and even then it was maybe 1 or 2 visits each year. It's a sacrifice to eat all the Kit Kats or Twixes or whatever, but one must be prepared to celebrate the holiday.

  5. Thanksgiving (and belated happy one to our neighbors to the north) is a Thursday and that's the day I have whatever special food I'm going to have, and it won't be turkey. I will probably eat around midafternoon. Any later and indigestion will keep me up all night.
