'm not sure how unpopular this is, but "shippers" can ruin shows for me....But when overly passionate shipping overtakes message boards, it makes me start hating a show

Only on tv do women not have to prop their leg up on the shower wall in order to shave. Nor do they use shaving cream, even when extolling the virtues of some fancy razor.

Also Only on TV do women stranded in the middle of nowhere for weeks on end have hairless legs and underarms and a perfectly maintained "bikini area".

 

Because I know that, for me, the top priority if stranded on, say Craphole Island, would be to concoct a dipilatory from coconuts and plane parts. Screw water, food, and shelter; one must remain prepubescently hairless at all times.

What bothers me about could of, should of, would of, and for all intensive purposes is that they imply, to me, the users have never read a damn book in their blighted lives. They seem like mistakes made by people who have only heard the phrases and never read them.

Another annoyance is people saying they "graduated college" instead of "graduated from college" (or high school).  I know it's not exactly wrong,  but I've only started hearing it said that way in the last couple of years.

I am not alone! Thank you, @Ohwell! When, and why, did this become ubiquitous? It also drives me crazy that everyone adds "out" and "up" to words that don't need them and never used to have them. Switch does not need out added to it. Change does not need up added to it. I think what really bothers me is the widespread failure to note that things have changed. It's like everyone forgets something used to be said one way and now it's being said another way all the time.

I think the pronunciation of Appalachia is a north/south division. The Appalachian Trail, for example, is AppaLAYshun in NY and New England, probably down to Virginia.

FWIW, Dictionary.com gives for-tey as the pronunciation for forte and Merriam-Webster says "In forte we have a word derived from French that in its “strong point” sense has no entirely satisfactory pronunciation."

The union's responsibility is to the teacher, just as the public defenders responsibility is to the defendant, but the scope of the union's duty is defined by whatever the agreement is between it and the state, school board, or whoever the other party is. It can certainly be distasteful to have to defend the due process rights of someone you believe to be completely guilty, but even total scum have a right to due process, to have any mitigating factors brought to the attention of the court or whoever, to have objective procedures applied as evenly to them as to the saint who has been falsely accused. People can usually be put on leave while the process runs its course.

 

Every contract is different, but I've never had one that paid for lawyers. For our members, it's sometimes a choice between using the union representative or mortgaging their house to hire a lawyer. If they're charged with a crime, it's out of the union's jurisdiction.

I think we're conflating unions: unviersities and K-12 teachers are not typically in the same unions, and different rules apply. Also, every chapter (could be one university, a state uniersity system, a school district) has it's own collective bargaining agreement and they're all different in specifics while having some features in common.

 

At university level, it is as @Fremde Frau describes. My union includes adjuncts but many don't. I don't know how most K-12 contracts work, but if a union stops protecting a teacher who's accused of anything, as @alexvillage posits, it seems like that would be a violation of their duty of fair representation. However, if the accusations are about criminal behavior, the union is most likely replaced by the judicial system. They should still express due process concerns, regardless.

Yes, and you can really see the resemblance between C&J if you look at Colin as Mr. Darcy and Jonathan as...I'm going to say Byron...on an episode of Highlander. It's all in the curls. And it would be said to break up the set. Peter is not related to them so it's not an acting dynasty like the Redgraves (are up to the 4th generation of them yet?).

I keep thinking about Hope & Glory, which came out eons ago and was about the home front in WW2 England from a boy's point of view. The really interesting story was his older sister's but we only got glimpses from his pov.
