  1. Last night's Colbert Report segment with John Dean reminded me how much I hate, with the heat of a thousand burning nuns, flames on the side of my face, totally hate, use of the present tense when describing what happened in the past. It's the PAST, it's history, it already happened. English has a whole tense just for that. Use it! Releated to that, but not on TV: I can't read books or fan fic written in present tense. It feels like the author standing up and waving "look at me! Look at me! I'm an auteur!"
  2. You beat me to it, @ganesh. Triangles are second only to will-they-won't-they.
  3. I'll give it a try, @peggy06. The ad line is "Did you know words really can hurt?" and then the cowboy hurts himself by smacking into the giant words THE END.
  4. @The Crazed Spruce, I did actually mention Hudson University 3 posts above yours, although I wasn't aware of its use on many of the shows you mentioned.
  5. Ovation will be airing the 1993 version on Friday 8/15 at 8 p.m.
  6. In this anti-intellectual climate and with girls getting shot in the face for wanting an education, the message that girls should be educated and how education can change lives is welcomed. It was a bit heavy-handed but this is not a show for subtlety. I did like the point about Ninon having more choice than the girls she decided to help.
  7. Got it. Thanks, @Lisin. I noticed the sudden appearance of header posts in several already-established topics today and wondered what was up.
  8. James Cromwell! I remember him first from Hot L Baltimore and then Murder by Death, so I think I'm pre-disposed to think he's going to be funny. Needless to say, I was quite surprised by L.A. Confidential.
  9. @Lisin, I'm confused by this post that appeared today at the head of the topic. Were we veering off course? There are only a handful of posts in this topic and I don't think any of them belonged elsewhere? The post read like a warning or chastisement but I'm not sure what warranted either so I'm asking for clarification.
  10. I've often quoted two of the Geico ads: Madest thou look! Sorry, Daisy. But I'm a loner, and a loner's gotta be alone.
  11. Hudson University, notorious alma mater of strippers working their way through law school and uncountable numbers of killers and victims in the L&O universe, was also mentioned on Castle. Castle's station house is 12 a.k.a The ol' 1-2 from Barney Miller. Ive wondered if St. Sebastian Hospital from Lost was a crossover...I know I heard it in another show but I've forgotten what it was now. Something set in L.A. The Closer, maybe? Thanks so much for this topic! I can't wait to check all of the links! ETA: From the dangerousminds.net link: Darrin Stephens from Bewitched is referenced as part of the St. Elsewhere universe. Technically, it's his mother. I remember the scene well because it was really just a throwaway line. A psychiatrist played by GW Bailey is on the phone and you just catch him saying "I'm sure your daughter-in-law is not a witch, Mrs. Stevens."
  12. Although I'd prefer new episodes, I missed part of the Battle of the Decades so I'm happy for the repeats. One thing I missed was how they construed "decade" because it seemed like many of the players in any given decade actually played in an another. For (totally made up) example: Ms. X who originally played in 1975 is in 1960s week.
  13. Maybe this should go in the Unpopular Opinions topic, but I don't hate yogurt. I have it several times a week mixed with fresh fruit and granola and also use it in cooking in place of sour cream.
  14. FWIW, the Emmys are on Monday Aug. 25. Not that I've had it marked on my calendar for months or anything. Who would do that....
  15. They all make me miss Eureka and wish he had another show.
  16. I'm trying to remember the last panelist who was as bad as Jermaine. There was someone, maybe who wasn't a comedian?
  17. I'm going to go out on a limb and say there is more than one way to act like a kid; all of the other contestants in the tournament are also kids and yet they don't make sounds like an injured seal. You know what would be a killer FJ? Answering "when this volcano in Iceland erupted, it disrupted air travel for weeks."
  18. I'm relieved to see others are as annoyed by Jeff's noises as I am.
  19. I commend your industry. I call it "that volcano in Iceland."
  20. Again? So soon? They just had 2 weeks off at the beginning of July. Slackers!
  21. ^^^When Stephen was suggesting other naked shows. The mashups were genius. I loathe those things and so am pleased to see them mocked.
  22. Wow, Neil deGrasse Tyson has been working out! And manscaping!
  23. Yes @RubyWoo72! Only on TV do windows and doors never have screens, unless it's a decrepit screen door flapping in the wind to denote desertion, poverty, and/or scary happenings. Also Only on TV are 95% of the MEs female.
  24. @Hava, may I have a seat at your table? I've had to stop reading boards because nonstop shipping ate the thread and threatened to ruin a show for me.
