  1. Per Kristyn Burtt, only the finale will be live. Everything else is taping on the Saturday before. https://twitter.com/KristynBurtt/status/1157068926573936640?fbclid=IwAR1FD7B5OYmecDxT8vnIQ-VRbbgxRDQwxAf3yrW7meP5pIxcUESKmofD17I
  2. I'm no fan of teenage contestants on this show, but if they're going to keep doing that, I hope they signed up Auli'i Cravalho while they had her there. If she radiates as much poise and adorableness dancing as she does standing still, she'd be a fun one to watch. If Nancy's really as nerve-wracked and self-doubting as her packages are making her look, then give Artem all the acting awards, because he seems absolutely delighted to have her as a partner. I think she's probably just a fairly nice, quiet, shy person who does her job well but doesn't have a ton of personality to throw around. (Same for Simone, actually.) That's a problem with the packages and interviews, but I'll keep voting for her for as long as she lasts because I think her dancing is lovely.
  3. It is only partially a dance contest. It is also a popularity contest and an entertainment product. Mastery of any two of those elements can get you pretty far. Not sure dance has to be one of them, though it usually has been for the final winner. Obviously Alek is crushing the popularity portion, and I think on the other two he has done far better than the producers had any right to expect when they ripped him from the headlines. Totally agree with this. Lifts are not nothing. I don't think it's a small feat to do them gracefully or even just in a way that does not look painful or dangerous. Some of the lifts other male contestants have done this season look like they're heaving a side of beef onto their shoulders. Strength is clearly Alek's strength, and Lindsay has wisely played into it, and in return he's done a good job of "presenting" her both as a dancer and a choreographer. I'd be just fine with them winning.
  4. Quite a lot of difference between the two, including alternate jokes, a cute bit with Alessia Cara, and a physical ad lib by Christa Miller that Chris d'Elia clearly did not know was coming. So fun to be able to watch both versions.
  5. May just be spin, but Bill Lawrence has been saying in his Periscopes that ratings don't matter for them. It seems possible that on a graveyard night, and especially given NBC's dismal record with comedies at the moment, buzz is more important than ratings. Being the show people are talking and Tweeting and writing about has some value.
  6. I'll admit, I'm one of those terrible viewers who regularly votes for dancers others consider "subpar." I rooted for Amy and Noah and Alek and voted and cheered when they got as far as they did. if you're tuning in hoping for a pure dance competition, I am arguably one of the things that's wrong with "Dancing With the Stars." And I understand your frustration, really. But I think dropping fan votes entirely should be the last recourse (especially as it would almost certainly result in the show getting sent home due to lack of viewers). Here are four things I'd like to see the show try before disenfranchising America: 1. Vote limits per star, not overall: As it is now, you have, say, 5 votes total to spend as you like. Change that to a maximum of 5 votes per star. You could give 100% of the votes allowed to your sentimental favorite, and still give up to 5 to the star who had that amazing dance this week, and to the star who was so hosed by the judges. That might tend to make the best dancers rise, because they’d have their own fan base plus appreciation votes from others. 2. Vote up/vote down. It’s pretty clear from these forums that people enjoy dissing stars they hate at least as much as praising their favorites. So you get, say, 10 plus votes and 5 minus votes a week. Even if that person you hate keeps going, there’s at least the satisfaction of being able to give an official “You suck.” 3. Eliminations based on the current week. I don't care how you do it. Disenfranchise anyone not watching live (sorry, those in other time zones). Have a half-hour results show on Tuesday. Heck, given how quick they’ve been doing the dispatching lately, devote one regularly scheduled commercial break in whatever's on ABC at 8 p.m. on Tuesday to giving the results. This business of people getting sent home a week late and viewers never being able to vote for what they just did is annoying and makes the results look stupid. 4. Judges with credibility. Our current crew seems to mostly serve a ceremonial function. Get people in there who can give articulate critiques, and give them coherent scoring rules. Are we judging on overall impression or on improvement? Do we give points for degree of difficulty? Does that extend to difficulty due to a disability (including age and physical fitness) or time limitations? Is there going to be a higher expectation for people with preexisting experience in dance or related fields? If the judging can be taken seriously, it can be weighted a little heavier than fan votes, and it can also make fan votes more informed. Plus, I would have to lunge for the mute button less.
  7. Or maybe an "All Ringer" season. Round up a field of ice skaters and ice dancers and gymnasts and Disney kids and up their degree of difficulty.
  8. Alek has been my favorite in the competition so far, and while I'd understand if being on a dancing show suddenly felt to him like an inappropriate thing to be doing, I'd hope he might stick with it out of an obligation to Lindsay if not to the show. She has a reasonable shot at getting to the finals if he keeps working as hard as he's been, and there would be a cost for her in payment, visibility, and opportunity if he bowed out (not that she wouldn't be supportive, but this is her livelihood). He seems like the kind of guy who might keep going and trying his best for that reason if nothing else. The burden will be on the show then not to do anything exploitive. Not sure they have that in 'em, but hope so.
  9. Oh, sure, I know it's not possible. Just that Alek's situation already seemed like a heavy load for such a lightweight show to bear, and now this, and Most Memorable Year is usually pretty fraught without all that. It's the feel-bad ep of the year!
  10. Unfortunately, Tom won't be there: http://www.people.com/article/tom-bergeron-alfonso-ribeiro-dwts-host. Unsurprisingly, Alfonso's stepping in. Seems like too much real life intruding into mirror-ball world this week. Maybe they should take the week off.
  11. I have a friend whose daughter enthusiastically voted for him on week 1 and then had too much homework to watch and vote this week. So if the teachers of America will just cooperate and keep his core demo busy on Monday nights, maybe we can be done with the little punk.
  12. And a better hairstyle wouldn't hurt either.
