  1. Going public after YEARS of lurking to say how much I am enjoying this. I am a huge fan of the book and I think that for the most part they have been as faithful to the source as possible with a few exceptions: the escape from Osaka seemed a lot less unhinged and maniacal on Blackthorne's part than the book version, so much so that it was halfway done when I realized that oh, shit, THIS is the escape? But...okay, I can live with it. The production design is amazing, and it really brings feudal Japan to life in a way I have not seen portrayed before. The casting is very well-done across the board, especially the major players (Blackthorne, Toranaga, Ishido, Hiromatsu etc), and props to whoever it was that named Nestor Carbonell as Rodrigues, I did not recognize him at all; he is doing a great job. I enjoy the actor playing Alvito, as well, and I think the actor playing Yabushige is crushing it, too; you can really see his wheels turning all the time as he tries to maneuver. BUT...a standing ovation to Anna Sawai, who is absolutely owning the character of Mariko: such a complex character with so many loyalties and contradictions, and she is nailing it. I really did not enjoy her character in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (those three characters, the "kids", were all so damn annoying and not in a good way, and I could not stand it when they were onscreen), and I really questioned her casting for this when I saw it. Huge turnaround for me regarding her, I think she is amazing here - I hope she will be the breakout star here, she is earning it.
  2. Fantastic episode, I can't add anything that hasn't been said already. EXCEPT...Joel knew the gate code. The fact that Bill went from essentially holding a gun on Joel and Tess in their first meeting to giving them open access to his compound - granted, with a time leap - is fucking huge. For all the people who become "worse" people in an apocalypse, it is good to see that some are better for it.
  3. Agreed, even with his abrasiveness and paranoia. Philip's doubt is much more visible than any second thoughts Elizabeth might have, and maybe that's why he and William seemed to connect. I also have to wonder if seeing William like that made either of them wonder if that's how they'll end up when it's all said and done. Could happen to anyone in this game, but at least they might get their own stamp, too.
  4. De-lurking to just ask if there is anyone else who finds William's fate incredibly sad? It just seems that he never really had a chance at that wife and kids Gabriel mentioned, and his being buried in a welded coffin in a deep, unmarked grave wrapped in plastic is no way to end up for someone who sacrificed so much. Anyway...I'm not normally so sentimental and yes, I know he knew the risks etc etc, but damn, that got me.
  5. Delurking to comment on what a joy it is to watch Ted Danson as Hank. He stole every scene he was in on Bored to Death and he is killing it here, too. I was howling watching his reactions in the cabin with Peggy and Ed and then outside on the deck. So calm and understated, as if Hank is just laughing at the absurdity of the situation, too. I hope he survives. Fantastic casting top to bottom, and much praise to Kirsten Dunst, as well. I never would have expected Peggy to get as....ummmm, realized...as she's become. She'll be the new crime boss in no time.
