Yes, Pomona is on the east end of LA County (were you thinking of Fresno, being "halfway to Sacramento"?), making the various plot points of this episode plausible (if not still ridiculous). And the Claremont Colleges are real, too, including my alma mater, Harvey Mudd College - from which we drove into downtown LA many times.
