  1. Soo mentioned he just got married. Maybe he couldn’t make it to the main filming because of that? The timing of LCK was always a bit fuzzy to me. Do they film them all in one chunk just before the return episode? Or spread out as they are eliminated? I hope if Soo doesn’t make it into the main show they cast him to Top Chef proper in a future season.
  2. Do y'all want spoilers from the upcoming books? I could lay out some that stick in my mind, though not a comprehensive list.
  3. Have they yet outlawed a quarterback pretending to run out of bounds only to turn upfield at the last moment for extra yardage while defensive players have eased up fearful of drawing a flag?
  4. I think I was most entertained by the ballsiness of the authorial tactic of having the story grow so exponentially that 80% of the story becomes obsolete every 50 pages. Oh now we’re introducing cryosleep to this important character… and now we’re living in underground sentient tree world 500’years later. Oh, now it’s 200 years later and we’re in a space ghetto. And I found the authors view of psychology fairly one note, with the most psychotic character usually being right in any dispute, but having a significant portion of humanity align with alien invaders out to destroy humanity for the LOLs rang truer watching the stupidity of people in the pandemic.
  5. I'm highly enjoying your rants in the episode threads, PurpleTentacle. Having not seen these yet, but having read the books, I can tell you that all the plot points you're shouting at are from the book. Not once have I said "Well, that sounds like it was completely invented for the show" while reading your screeds. I come from scifi from a more pop culture level than you, I think. More Star Trek than Heinlen, so the possible lack of rigorousness in the Hard Sci Fi claim doesn't both me. I kind of think you won't like the books much either. There are lots of ideas and concepts, and I like some and others are whatever. And this overall grim point of view of humanity in which the only ones who are realistic are the ones manically ruthless enough to sacrifice everyone else for the chance at peace and survival. Perhaps they haven't conveyed and explained the plot points from the books well, but they seem to be trying earnestly to hew to the book's plot.
  6. I've read the books and have yet to watch the show. I'm interested in seeing people's reactions to it. It seems like such an impossible adaptation, and the dudes who effed up Game of Thrones would not have been my first choice to attempt it, lol. When you get into it as the story picks up momentum it feels like every fifty pages or so you're in a completely different sci-fi story all rolled together into one dense glob like a story version of Katamari Damacy.
  7. He's a Superfan who seems all in on TAR discussion.
  8. I'd like to say Hi to Danny since it seems likely that he'll be reading this. The cast is filled with colorful characters but thus far they are not shining exemplars of quality racing. Rod is interesting here. As a player he was the most nondescript NFL player imaginable. First round pick, not actually a bust but never actually ever very good. Out of the league after 6 years. Looking at all the NFL players who have run the Amazing Race, his career is less distinguished than DeAngelo and Gary, Chester and Ephraim (both offensive linemen, so hard to compare stats, but had longer careers as starter than Rod who was out of the league after 6 years), and Marcus Pollard (never a star, but played a long time). That said, Rod is enjoyable thus far on TAR.
  9. At least the eliminated team can take solace that the one sibling learning French wouldn’t have mattered anyway.
  10. When the last season in which they did all chartered flights, two seasons ago, they had them start off each leg in pairs of two teams at a time spaced 10 minutes apart, I think, based on when they checked in. I felt that I would have preferred them to depart one team at a time with perhaps that 10 minute gap. It didn't seem like enough time given that check in times could be hours apart.
  11. In general, even though we know that this episode was retrofit to be 90 minutes it didn’t seem artificially stretched. It’ll be the later episodes which might be more padded seeming with fewer teams and with the race not designed to have extra checkpoints like we may have seen last season.
  12. The signing Von Miller to a huge contract and having him completely crater last year must be the most bitter pill for Buffalo fans. He was supposed to help put the Bills over the top against the Chiefs but now he’s the major reason for the roster blow up.

It's the Celtics. They'll go to seven games in the first round to like the Hawks and then go down 3-2 against the Heat. It's been this way since the Paul Pierce Big 3 era.
  14. Travis was the one who was kicked off of his college team for an entire year for failing a drug test before a bowl game. (Just marijuana, but still) Of the two, Travis is usually seen as the wilder one.

Seattle. The only place he hasn't left willingly.
  16. Well I was going to post a quip that went like “It’s not quite 28-3, but let’s see if Kyle Shanahan can manage the other end of a comeback.”
  17. Man. A Detroit massacre of SF would be very, very weird to me.
  18. Taylor Swift now has the chance to do the funniest thing ever: Break up with Travis on the eve of the Super Bowl. Whatever the result, it'd be legendary.
  19. From my point of view, Belichick's problem isn't relating to the 20 something athlete. I think he still does. The Patriots played hard for him throughout the miserable season. Contrary to popular view, players usually don't come away from the Patriots hating Bill Belichick for the most part. (There are always exceptions of course, which usually stem from guys who wanted more money from Belichick the GM.) Players weren't shy about letting people know that they hated playing under Josh McDaniel and Matt Patricia, but they usually pay respect to Belichick. Instead, Belichick's problem as I see it, is relating to 30-40 something year old coaches. His stalwart assistants like Dante Scarnecchia, Ivan Fears, and Ernie Adams retired and he couldn't bring himself to trust and delegate to younger coaches. He would rather recycle Joe Judge and Matt Patricia to run an offense than to have to adjust his thinking to a new offensive voices outside of his sphere of influence. If you were an owner considering and excited about hiring Belichick, does your enthusiasm remain if Bill tells you his plan is to have Josh McDaniel as the OC? Bill retires in three or four years and then what?
  20. I don’t think Belichick’s getting hired anywhere. As a Patriots fan, I can’t fault teams for bypassing him at this point in his career. He’s seemingly lost his ability or desire to foster new talent in his offensive coaching staff leading to the last two misbegotten years. And what GM would be eager to work for someone used to wielding final say on all matters of personnel? I might be wrong but I have a hard time seeing a home for him. As for the Falcons, Raheem Morris was bad his first go around, but that was like 10 years ago and he was very young. He very well may be ready now.

The reporting that has come out since Griffin's firing has been this: In the offseason the leading candidate that the Bucks were looking at was Nick Nurse, but Giannis did not want to play under Nick Nurse, and of the other candidates Griffin intrigued him most, so they went with him. Why Giannis was wary of Nurse hasn't been revealed, but in retrospect it looks like a massive error given how Philly is doing.

Doc is a B- coach that everyone talks about like he's an F- coach. I mean, I get it. His team will choke in the playoffs. But what options are there for a midseason replacement coach?
  23. If it makes you feel better, I hate the Ravens slightly less than I hate the Chiefs.
  24. Bullet dodged, Brady haters. In a Purdy interview, Brock mentions that the team assured him that he would be the starter, "unless Brady wanted to play one more season for his hometown Niners." Wild that they would actually tell him that even if they were trying to get Brady. https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/brock-purdy-49ers-wanted-to-make-tom-brady-the-starter-in-2023
