  1. I just read all the glowing reviews for these lemony "brownies" so I'm going to make them. Thanks for sharing the recipe. I know I'll be adding a teence of cream cheese to the glazeπŸ‹
  2. Two 14 year old boys were killed within 33 hours of each other on Thursday, one near the Catholic University campus and the other in a metro station. Kids have always had fights but they used to be solved via fists. These days? Someone always seems to have a gun. Two young teenage girls were fighting over a sauce packet at McDonald's last fall & one of them solved the problem by killing the other. Just by coming to visit a city and not seeing any crimes take place doesn't tell the story.
  3. We have Medicare Advantage through United Health. I see only one practice that's out of their network but we're not charged more. I think the only folks who have stress-free health insurance may be in parts of Europe.

    MSNBC

I rarely watch TV after Deadline: White House but tonight, after watching Washington Week in Review, I switched over to MSNBC and instead of Chris Hayes, there was Jen Psaki hosting her show. Is this something new?
  5. We were home by the time the earthquake hit this morning but didn't feel anything. In 2011, I was sitting by a glass topped table & suddenly everything on it started rattling. Then I heard loud banging noises & thought my husband was hammering a wall upstairs. He came downstairs & said it was an earthquake (he'd worked in Los Angeles for several years so he recognized what was happening). Our damage was a break in the water pipe (under the front lawn) that goes into our house from the main pipe. A number of other front lawns here were dug up around the same time It would be interesting to see the paths the tremors took today to affect such a widespread area: the Mid-Atlantic to New England (from northern VA & southern MD to Boston & VT). @oliviabenson Was that in August 2011?
  6. What??? "Edmund Fitzgerald" is a *very* effective song. Not only do the lyrics pull the listener into the tragic story, so too does the haunting music. You can almost feel that chilly water and hear the groans & creaks of a sinking ship. IMNSHO, it's his best, followed by "Sundown". I love his distinctive voice, and the musical instruments used in his records.
  7. Got my fingers crossed for NC State ❀️
  8. Getting weary of all the smug comments in the Washington Post (re: the earthquake) from other parts of the country. The east is the oldest part of the continent and earthquakes are very shallow. That's why people up in Killington, VT, Albany NY, Boston, Tyson's Corner in northern VA, Delaware, southern MD have felt the tremors. I remember watching on TV all the damage the '89 earthquake did and that scary bridge collapse and the interstate collapse. Awful.
  9. Earthquake in NYC...who'd a thunk? I sure wouldn't want to be in a skyscraper (or walking down the street amongst them πŸ™„). 4.7 can do damage. They're still repairing National Cathedral after the 2011 earthquake that I think was 5.8. I just got back from having my lower eyelids tightened. It was done for medical reasons (very dry eyes & repeated eye infections), so insurance is covering it. I'm so glad I cancelled a P.T. appt on Monday. The tiny bandages beside each eye are stained with blood. I'm hiding out at home this weekend. They told me "no strenuous activity". Heh heh...no worries about that 😁.
  10. It's bad in DC these days. Three 12 year old girls beat a disabled man to death not too long ago. Young kids with guns highjacking cars. And the occasional mentally ill person acting out by stabbing whoever's nearby. I haven't been into the district since the covid shut down and am not eager to revisit it right now.
  11. Oh dear! I think I saw those same two tiny birds today, up on the same Maple tree branch, *loudly* chirping away again. And I think I saw white markings on them that I didn't see previously. So, they're around, probably still looking for a place to build.
  12. No...it's a brick wall. I took it down and hung the Valentine wreath (it's smaller & the material is not inviting to nest builders).
  13. Just outside DC in VA. No white markings that I could see. And I just see them in the front of the house where there's a good size maple tree (never on the deck in back where we have a bird feeder). They remind me of Juncos but they're tinier and more slender.
  14. I need to look them up in a bird book. They're tiny birds, dark gray. Oh well, the new wreath looked fabulous for the Easter holiday weekend.
  15. Just collect it and put it outside on a shrub or on the grass...or on your deck.
  16. I just switched back to the Valentine wreath (it's not a welcoming material for nestbuilders). Now I'm wondering just when is nestbuilding time over???
  17. @kristen111 I was born kinda lazy so I'm happy to stay home. I have a Thursday morning coffee group at the clubhouse...they're a hilarious group of women. Sometimes I'll go to lunch with one of them (she should've been on TV...we crack each other up). Thank God I have cleaners every other week (they don't charge a lot so I provide the supplies and have the house "ready" for them). I use back roads, side roads, state highways, anything but interstates and make appointments for late mornings and early afternoons to avoid rush hours. I don't really want to travel much any more (planes) but short road trips are fine. My husband loves to travel so thank goodness he has our daughter, SIL & grandson to venture to far off places.
  18. Poor birds. But I can't have a nest on the front door. Hmmm...I thought the cat fur would scare them away (not use it for building materials!) I might take down the wreath for a month or so.
  19. Last spring I hung a pretty, flowery wreath on the front door. One day I stepped out on the front stoop & there was a tiny nest on the stoop. My husband put it on a shrub but I said no bird would want to be that exposed. The bird never used it again. So...last week I hung a new spring wreath (the previous wreath is a bit mangled from the nest builder). Today I heard loud tweets near the front door. I opened it slowly & two tiny birds flew away, I thought, from the front stoop's ceiling area. I came back and got some cat fur (from a thing that you run over furniture) & placed the fur in two areas of the wreath. I may hunt for some more shedded fur & place it on the wreath. Is this a good idea? Anything else I should do? So much hard work for birds building these nests. I feel bad for them.
  20. I no longer participate in these "surveys"...mostly from medical/dental practices. They're annoying.
  21. Hmmm...several years ago, at an old recipe forum called Gail's Recipe Swap, I learned that someone out in Hawaii, on a diet, used 1 Tbsp Oil & 3Tbsps popcorn. I've used it ever since w/ just a minimal sprinkle of fine sea salt. It's great w/ a glass of Pinot Grigio πŸ€—
  22. Our family left at 6:30 AM today after a great Easter weekend. All I wanted/made for supper tonight was bacon, eggs, toast & coffee. And early bed. I'm beat 😁.

    MSNBC

Yes, they can pay it out of the money they'll save after firing the top execs whose not very bright idea it was to hire Ronna.
  24. Let's wait until we receive an explanation (if any). I haven't seen anything in Pet Peeves that needs addressing. Maybe they're focused on other threads (where folks may be out of control). Here? We're good!! 🌸πŸͺ»πŸ’š
