and I’m calling it now. Kelly wants a baby. The way he was looking at Stella holding the baby (who I spent most of the episode trying to identify)…wonder if Stella wants kids?

I thought the same thing too. They both mentioned in passing before about wanting kids but not any real deep conversations about it.

And I’m editing because I just realized that if Stella does get pregnant, she won’t be able to work for at least a year. She cannot actively be a firefighter while she’s pregnant and then of course there’s a postpartum period. So that opens up the possibility for Mouch to take temporary command of truck, 51 and opens a spot on it for Kylie. this also allows for them to continue having cast members miss random episodes for budgetary reasons. Solves the “how can Mouch get a promotion“ along with “where do we find space for Kylie“ problems.

Budget cuts?  If everyone wanted her to stay, they could have just broken them up again. I don't know for sure, but my guess is that it was her choice.

That’s what I think too. She’s been doing the role for a long time and the Chicago weather can be tough to shoot in. And didn’t she have a baby a couple of years ago? She might have been ready for easier hours.

Speaking of the other students in the class:

Wouldn't Dr. Sturgis or Dr. Linkletter have pulled Sheldon aside and told him,

"Sheldon, you are the smartest kid in town.  Maybe the smartest kid in Texas.  Be ready because you are going into a program where EVERYBODY is the smartest kid in their hometown.  This may be the first time you're not the number one in the class."

Linkletter doesn’t like Sheldon enough to help him like that. And as sweet as Sturgis is, he doesn’t strike me as a guy who would think of that.

    Getting back to Young Sheldon

This is a totally valid point that I can't believe so many of us missed. Mary leaving was not a sudden unplanned thing. The family knew she was going to be spending the summer in Germany with Sheldon. They seemed to be functioning pretty well before the tornado (in terms of the household running smoothly and things that needed to get done being done). The additional number of people in the house due to the tornado should not have caused the chaos it did in terms of meal prep and chores.

I think the joke was supposed to be that George is just a big kid and now Missy is the responsible adult, which is super wrong and icky in so many ways on so many levels.

It literally had just jumped into my head that they were supposed to be looking after themselves no matter what, tornado or no tornado.

We can’t really say things were going smoothly before the storm, though given that it hit while George and Missy were on their way back from the airport. A Mary-less routine never got started.

  5. Having watched every episode so far, I’ve come to the conclusion that if I’d had to serve in World War II, I would’ve done my best to get onto the Army Air Corp ground crews in the ETO. Seems to be my best chance of actual survival although I’d probably be going home with a lot of psychological torment about watching friends fly off and never return.

There's always another possibility, though, that they set this show in the future a few years.  That may make it more interesting.  Also, is there any reason to believe that we won't see Sheldon at all in this spin-off?  I know he's supposed to go off to school but that doesn't mean he'll fall off the face of the earth either.

Well, if they’re going to insist on proceeding with a spinoff based on Georgie and Mandy, moving the timeline for a couple of years, actually gets them out of having to show Sheldon. By the time we see Georgie as an adult on the Big Bang Theory, it’s been established that the brothers are deeply estranged and haven’t communicated in years. Possibly since George Senior‘s death.

  7. Oh, how I have missed the show! And when I watched it tonight, I developed theory. I think that all of the references we’ve heard over the years to George’s drunkenness, and the story of him cheating wasn’t really him. What if it was Mary? And it all took place during the trip to Germany. She’s already been out drinking and getting quite wasted. And we’ve never actually seen George drunk. *Mary* is the one who is unable to moderate. What if it was Mary that Sheldon walked in on? And then George’s death came so quickly afterwards that as a coping mechanism Sheldon was denial about which parent cheated. A combination of deep grief for his father and anger at his death. If he thinks of George as a bad person, it’s easier to cope with him being gone.

this would also explain Mary’s religious fanaticism when we meet her in Big Bang Theory. She is carrying around a tremendous load of guilt. I know we see her very religious in this show, but BBT took it to a whole other level.

If Kelly is leaving the show they need to find a plausible way to break them up.  I’d rather see them split than have her pretending he’s somewhere else when the actor is gone.  We don’t need another Brett- Casey long distance relationship.

They already have a reason for him to be off screen, but local. He transfers to OFI like they were discussing. They can still be together just off screen. And it allows Taylor to do the occasional guest spot if he wants to.

I thought Connie was going to stay with Dale? Unless I am remembering wrong from the end of last season.

Given how crowded the Cooper house is at the moment, I can’t imagine Connie’s going to spend more than a night or two there. If Dale’s place is intact I imagine she’ll be over there pretty quick. There’s no way she and George Senior exist under the same roof peacefully for more than a day or two.

  10. This episode was so well done! We're supposed to hate Klyden but the writers/actor/director were masterful in showing that however misguided he does love his child and more than anything is reacting to his own untreated mental health issues. The clincher for me was the worry when Topa didn't show for their game at the simulator. And then when Topa confronted her parents, it was evident that he really and truly believes that the gender surgery corrected a genuine defect, that he was desperately trying to give his child a good life.

What could have been such a black-and-white storyline did a masterful job of introducing shades of grey.

Did Cruz bring Javi once?  But I think that's because Severide wanted to show him that Cruz is a hero, or something... It wasn't as free babysitting.

He did. Javi’s school had some days off and Chloe had to work. Javi came in cause Joe had no babysitter.

Sylvie bringing the baby to work was absurd. It's the reason I thought adopting a baby was such a stupid idea for her. She works 24 hour shifts and has no discernible family to help her out. What happens when all of the different trucks, squads, ambo, etc. are all called out for the same emergency? Who looks after the kid then? It happens all the time, wasn't it convenient it never happened in this episode?

In all fairness, if Sylvie has managed to get six months in without a babysitting emergency, then kudos to her. It’s clearly not a regular thing for her to bring the baby in. And haven’t Herman and Cruz and Dawson had their kids running around the house at various points as well? It’s probably easier for Boden to just let her bring the baby in for a shift or two then to track down a floater if she calls out.

Did anyone catch what all of Severide's texts said?  Something about something only existing if Capp has one as a pet... I'll try to watch again and pause it to see if it was anything clever.

Severide said he saw a rattlesnake in the parking lot and she commented back he wouldn’t see that in Chicago. He responded ‘unless Cap was keeping one as a pet’.

It was driving me nuts enough to go back and check.

K1 had already expressed wants, curiosity, a desire to explore, could conceptualize fairness and inequality, and evolved a sense of self, among other things that went well beyond being just a Tonka toy, enough so that mistreating him for laughs was wrong. The kids were nasty little sadists and the parents were awful.

The whole torture thing made my stomach churn. There such an innocence to K-1. He was showing curiosity from the beginning and seemed so lonely. He just wanted to be around other people. That family was a just evil.

  15. I really liked this! And it was well written, to the point where I could really envision it playing out on screen. I think it was a great way to get that storyline out there even though they couldn’t shoot the episode. If they don’t get picked up for season four, I wouldn’t mind getting some more novellas in this style.

I was going to say this too - and maybe Boden actually has to approve Cruz's desire to take the test?  Like, he has to sign off on it, confirming Cruz has met minimum requirements.  Otherwise, could any rookie just starting out throw their name in and waste everyone's time?  I'd hope not, but never know.

I think Boden does have to approve Cruz taking the test. If I recall correctly from when Stella did it, it involved Boden having to put her name on the list. She couldn’t just sign up for herself and presumably that’s the same way it works here with Cruz.
