    Spoilers and Spoiler Speculation

Anyone else think now would be a perfect time to bring back Izzie? (not like it will EVER happen and I wouldn't actually want it to...) BUT...with Derek gone and viewers angry, Izzie would be a great way to draw in ratings. AND, it could be good for Shonda's reputation (which seems to be taking a hit with this Derek death). Shonda could show she's "above" all the pettiness (ha!). It could also provide a new, big couple now that MerDer is no more (tear). Again, I know that won't happen, and as a Jolex fan I'm not sure I would want it, but if ABC/Shonda were smart, it seems that would be a great move (that is, if KH's show isn't picked up for S2...which i'm doubting)....

    Dr. Alex Karev: Evil Spawn

While Jo clearly was meant to be Alex's love interest from the start, it's actually been that way for several of the characters. Arizona was designed to be Callie's love interest, Owen for Cristina, and now Amelia was paired with Owen before Caterina even stepped on set. While I understand why fans don't appreciate a character that's specifically "designed" for another because it may feel forced, I've never understood why Jo gets that criticism so much more than every other character that fits the same category -- which is pretty much every non-original (with the exception of jackson/april, maybe). As for Jo not being popular, I doubt this has anything to do with the lack of Jolex. If the writers wanted to ignore Jo because she isn't popular, she would barely be in the episodes...but she's actually had more character development/story line/patients than Alex has. It hasn't been much, but she has played significant roles in several episodes (like last week, or the one with the lady living in her car...). And, though Jo might not be popular among the Grey's fandom (who I basically consider to be anyone who takes the time to post on forums...like us!) I really don't think she's disliked among casual viewers, who FAR outnumber the fandom viewers. I have several friends who casually watch grey's every week, and they all love Jo and they love Alex/Jo...Shonda and the writers should have learned by now that the majority of their viewers are the general public and not the ones tweeting them like crazy every week. So I doubt that has anything to do with it. Just my two cents :)

    S11.E17: With Or Without You

I cannot get behind Owen/Amelia, only because it seems so so so forced. It's clear they paired them together because Shonda loves both characters/actors, can't do story lines for single doctors well, and wants Owen to have a kid ASAP. So she shoved these two doctors together even though I don't see any chemistry. And It also bugs me Shonda said they were going to move slowly to "respect" what he had with Cristina or whatever...but instead already they have more screen time than Alex and Jo, more meaningful scenes than Jolex have had all season, and I wouldn't be surprised if Amelia was pregnant by the end of the season. suuuuuure. real slow....gag.

Perhaps Derek does end up operating at the other hospital like you suggested. This could become a good way to explain more of PD's absence in the show for Season 12. Assuming PD wants time off to race next year just like he did this year, they will need to explain his absence. I thought they might just send him to DC again (which they might), but since they're playing up the whole Shepherd sibling rivalry AGAIN (zzzzzz) maybe Derek will end up taking a neurosurgeon job at a different hospital. That way he could pop into GSMH when needed, perhaps have a few scenes with Mer at home, but still not have to be seen much.... But other than that, after reading the sides I had assumed the patient that the doctor's are working on is a character we know. And since the patient isn't being casted, isn't that actually a given? That we know him or her? If so, and if the doctor dies or is brain dead (like in the sides), I'm assuming this might be some sort of alternative universe episode. They haven't done one yet this season...

    Dr. Alex Karev: Evil Spawn

Ugh, agree with everything you said, Deanie. I've been wondering what BTS drama may have put Alex and Jo in the background THIS much, and even with all the possible reasons you all have suggested, NOTHING excuses completely ignoring Alex and Jo like they have been this season. I think Patrick may have requested more time off than originally planned and they continued with Alex being Mer's person longer than they intended. I say this because when Maggie babysat Mer's kids and Mer called her that night, it really seemed like Maggie would become Mer's new person. And while they've become friends, Alex is still her go to guy...so I think something there may have changed. Either way, whatever it is, if Shonda WANTED to tell a Jolex storyline, I'm confident she and the writing team could have figured timing and everything out to make it work. Maybe not a huge arc, but they definitely could have figured out SOMETHING (maybe something on the same level as the love contract story, which only required a few minutes of screen time per episode for 4-ish episodes). But not even that...it's very odd. Jolex went from having great screen time in 10A, no story line in 10B but still several cute scenes in, a messy, horribly written story line of some sort in 11A, to absolutely nothing in 11B. I know Justin is perhaps the most chill guy in Hollywood and never seems to have problems with anyone, but I do wonder if something happened between him and Shonda BTS? I know this sounds very conspiracy theorist of me, but Justin used to be on Twitter a lot, and he tweeted about his faith/religion a lot. One day, all of that ended almost instantly and he only came on to "live tweet" every Thursday at 8 pm (but, I really don't think it was actually him live tweeting...didn't he say years ago that he doesn't really watch the show anymore? And now he sits down every Thursday to watch a show that he's not even in?). I'm just wondering if something happened behind the scenes to do with how he was using his Twitter account. Again, I know that's far-fetched, I just think it's interesting..

hmm yea it is odd that they would kill a character in an episode that's not the finale, though. Have they ever mixed slides for the finale in with the sides of another episode? It's also odd to me that they are casting three (or more?) doctors...is the dying doctor taken to a different hospital? That would be a really disappointing death. Especially if it's a major character, they don't even have the other characters' reactions or have them working on him/her? The character's last moments would be with a ton of guest stars? I agree it's not Richard. At this point I'm thinking Alex, Jo, Stephanie, or Arizona. Maybe April if Sarah Drew decided she wants to spend more time at home with her kids, but I highly doubt it. OR...is it possible that they are trying to cast some new doctors for GSMH and these slides are made up? A scene to give the people who are auditioning? Or is that unlikely? It is fun to speculate! But I worry about my favorite (Alex). It seems the writers have not invested in his character, so I wouldn't be surprised if they decided to kill him off. It would create a lot of drama for most of the other characters.

    Spoilers and Spoiler Speculation

I saw someone point out on tumblr: the director for 11x20 tweeted the picture of JPJ in the car and said they were shooting the first scene of 11x20. So, if a character is dying in a car crash in 11x21, I don't think it would happen in the first scene of the episode before it....in both sides (20 and 21) there seem to be car accidents, so my guess is that Webber is driving and witnesses the accident in 11x20 and maybe stops to help or something? Also since webber had a NDE experience in season 9 finale, if they were planning to send him off, i think they would just send him to boston with catherine...another disaster for webber seems repetitive, but that's just my opinion. I dont think they would kill derek, even if patrick desperately wanted to leave. he signed on through season 12 and it seems like they gave him a lot of schedule flexibility. why would he want out after they've already been so gracious to him? I would be more concerned about those whose contracts are up this season (do we know anything about owen, april, jackson, arizona contracts?) or the characters who haven't had any story line or focus (especially alex, but also jo and stephanie). any the sides say the patient hasn't shown brain activity. does that actually mean the character is going to die?! they also change the sides a lot, so "no brain activity" could actually be "limited brain activity" and whoever it is could make a miraculous recover by the finale?

    Dr. Alex Karev: Evil Spawn

Yeah...but as someone said above, Sara and Kate Walsh are/were (?) good friends with Heigl too, so idk. Maybe Alex has just never been a character Shonda felt emotionally attached to. As for Jo, I think it might just be that Shonda also hasn't felt a connection to her. Maybe someone else on the writing team created Jo? Idk...there has to be a reason for it. I'm hoping sooner or later Shonda will connect with Jo and she and Alex can have a great SL. It took almost this long for the writers to give April and Jackson a bigger SL, and this is their 6th season on the show. Anyone think Alex (and Jo) may be being written out this season? I've seen a bunch of speculation of that on social media. It seems they phased George out this way, by not giving him as much his last season so audiences didn't miss him as much. It would make absolutely no sense to me to lose another original right after Cristina, but with Maggie and Amelia joining the show, I wouldn't be surprised if they're being forced to cut the budget. And, if they need to cut the budget, I wouldn't be surprised if Alex/JC would be on the top of Shonda's list. Again, pure speculation, but I've seen some discussion of it to maybe explain the lack of Alex this season....

    Dr. Alex Karev: Evil Spawn

I've never thought about what chocolatechip said about him being friends with Katie...I would hope Shonda wouldn't ignore a character just because the actor supports his friend's career, but you never know... it's also unfortunate that not only does Shonda seem to not care about Alex, but she even doesn't care about his current female counterpart. You'd think if Shonda was so into strong women, Jo would be a perfect way to portray it even further...so not only does Alex get ignored, his girlfriend is too. Which I think is just further proof Shonda really doesn't care about Alex. If she did, she would've put more effort into developing his girlfriend's character and background.

    Dr. Alex Karev: Evil Spawn

I've been meaning to make an account on here for a while to discuss grey's, but this post sealed the deal! I've been wondering the very same thing for a long time. I'm not completely unbiased, because Alex is by far my favorite character. He's really the reason I still watch the show. But aside from that, I do think he's a fan favorite among the majority of viewers. Most people, who've seen the show from the beginning, like him, like watching Justin act, and would enjoy seeing more of Alex. And like you said, Justin Chambers seems to be a great, easy to get along with guy. Shonda has said before on Twitter that she thinks he's great. So why SO little focus? I think it's a mixture of two things: One, I think the actual character of Alex isn't one of Shonda's favorites, and only Shonda's favorites seem to get the biggest story lines and the most screentime. I saw someone say once that Shonda designed each male character off of a different type of male she's dealt with in the past, and Alex was designed off of all the men who've treated her with disrespect (at least in the earlier seasons). No idea if it's true or not, but I wouldn't be surprised. Secondly, I agree completely with something you've said. I think because he's not a female character, he'll always be in the background. Grey's has always been about portraying the strong women in the show. Shonda has said it so many times. It's not a secret. And it's not a problem for me if that's what the show is supposed to be about. My problem, though, is that it seems this season has gone WAY overboard in terms of portraying the women. It's like every. single. episode. is used to reinforce how great these female doctors are. They complain about Derek on a regular basis. Very few storylines that incorporate a male character actually show his perspective. (Has a male character even had a patient at all this season?!) The early seasons still showed great, strong women. But they also showed the men and their trials and tribulations as well. Maybe it's because there are so few male characters, or maybe Shonda wants to push her political agenda a little bit more, but either way, until Alex has a sex change, I don't think he'll get the kind of attention we Alex fans are looking for.
