  1. Oh, have you heard something more than the lack of announcement about her return next week? I have something to gripe about Heilemann and his hosting for Nicolle yesterday, but I'll take it to the MSNBC thread. I like Ari fine in his own show, but he is just not a good fit as a Rachel replacement. But when you get down to it, no one is. I listened to the show again that Nicolle guest hosted, and could not hear her interrupting anyone, despite what was said above -- I thought she did a far better job than Ari this week.
  2. Not a problem at all! I was just fascinated by all the bot comments, and glad for the alert in the article. I hope Decades stays on the air.
  3. I did not hear Ari say that Rachel will be back on Monday, and I was listening for that at the end -- did I miss it?
  4. I also wondered what Start TV would be replacing -- the article originally link made a reference to it replacing Decades on CBS Television Stations -- I have no idea if my Decades channel is on that network system. Hey, I really appreciate having an MSLS librarian vetting the citations!!! I read the more recent link you provided, and it was helpful, if not clear on the relationship to Decades TV. But all fodder for this thread about ye olde tyme shows, for sure.
  5. You totally read my mind about the suit and shave! And, I thought he was haranguing David Corn unnecessarily, trying to make Corn part of the problem about the Steele dossier -- not fair, Ari, because TRMS was out in front of promoting all this information, so let's not blame Corn for putting it out there -- TRMS was in front of line at this buffet, and milked it for many episodes. I thought even David Corn was looking surprised at the questions, but that might be my imagination. And then after spending too much time interrogating Corn about things Corn himself said we knew from a while back, he only left three to four minutes for David Farenthold, who had a MUCH more interesting story to tell us today! ETA: I have to thank whoever decided the Manafort trial should not be televised live. I would never leave the screen if it were on the air. I could have listened to Joyce Vance and Josh Gerstein for the full hour, recounting what happened in the courtroom today. Okay, 90% of the hour on the trial, and the rest on David Farenthold.
  6. Oh, wow, if you want to see what a string of bot-generated "Comments" looks like, look at the comments for this article. The first one looks legit, but all the others are the things that get sent to every blog. But the article itself, so disappointing! Those "woman-centric" dramas are a very mixed bag, some okay, some not. Not a channel I will ever watch. I guess it is possible that Decades will continue on some providers? I can't really tell.
  7. Nooooo, I love the shows currently on Decades! Right now, I am following "Family Affair", which I never saw when it ran originally, and most episodes surprise me with their array of topics and they way Brian Keith's character is written -- I know the show is available via streaming, but it is great to have it roll by on the television screen. And "Newhart" early seasons are a treasure! Oh, shoot.
  8. Thanks, I did not hear what led up to "You must read a lot of spy novels," so now I know not to worry about it too much. Agree that McFaul is always a great guest, excellent background on all things Russian. But no, it was not a great show. I do like Ari, but TRMS sets a very high standard that we expect.
  9. I thought I was being so shallow by being distracted by his ill-fitting jacket! (But the tie is appropriate!) I love Clint Watts, and had never seen that clip of him testifying to the House committee about Russian interference. Wow, so on target. (Jeff Goldblum [from about 20 years ago] really could play him in a film. Or Clint could play Goldblum.)
  10. The poem is "Say not the Struggle nought Availeth," by Arthur Hugh Clough. It was a lovely choice, beautifully read aloud. Here is a link: https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43959/say-not-the-struggle-nought-availeth And the poem has an apt reference to the fact that his four colleagues would be looking for his killer(s): "Your comrades chase e'en now the fliers"
  11. I am sure that all the anchors are prohibited from saying they will take a day or next week off -- but am in the pissed off crowd here, mainly because of expectations. Of course they need time off -- I have no problem with that. I have also noticed that Rachel used to promote the heck out of Richard Engel's specials on Friday evenings, but now, sometimes he just pops up with no advance notice from Rachel. Or, MSNBC will run a promotion for a Richard Engel special "9 PM on Friday!", but Rachel will not mention that she will be off, so her viewers are kept a little in the dark (unless we are watching at other times of the day and see the promos!). And I really, really appreciate it when the anchor says "Rachel will be back tomorrow." But they NEVER say she will be back "next week", because that would make us stop watching. I thought Nicolle Wallace did one of the best recent jobs filling for Rachel, and would tune in just for her. But Ari, not so much. The guest hosts do promote their Maddow show guest spots on their own shows. I can imagine the in-house rulebook on this illusion: "(1) let the Rachel fans think maybe Rachel will be back, and (2) let's encourage the viewers to hope by *not* mentioning she will be gone; *but* (3) let's have Katy's or Ari's fan club know in advance to attract their audience base, as long as (4) Rachel's fan club doesn't find out that Ari announced on his show that he is guest hosting on Rachel's show; and (5) someone make sure Ari has a more dignified evening tie".
  12. He himself admits it is a bad tie choice -- I think he wore it on his first show -- he has always displayed better ties on TRMS! But apparently, he was considering this tie for Monday's fill-in for Rachel! Previous admissions that it is not a good tie! https://www.facebook.com/AriMelber/photos/a.164189486968459.46714.128545747199500/1421642274556501/?type=1&theater https://twitter.com/AriMelber/status/871450769261821952
  13. I don't think he ever mentioned a daughter, and it was clear that Morse had no idea who the child was, so Bright offered some words about who she was. And Bright's wife is alive -- he did mention that she was out of the house at the moment.
  14. I did not know there was such a thing as a region-free DVD player! There is a video store nearby (like, every movie and TV series from every country, everywhere) that rents out a U.K. DVD player for DVDs that they can only get in U.K. format. I would not have rented it just for the leaf-raking scene, but would do it if there were a "lost" Endeavour episode out there! (But now that I've seen the leaf-raking scene, I might take a U.K. DVD to the store and ask them to play that scene!)
  15. THANK YOU! I thought he must have lost a bet to wear that tie in public. I didn't hear him say he would fill in for Rachel, but I easily could have missed it. They tend to run replacement hosts for her over two or three days, so it is unusual to have three different guest hosts in three different days.
  16. That was such an interesting episode, I had to watch it again to capture a few moments that were striking: Chuck Rosenberg making the point that "collusion" = "conspiracy," which is the actual term in the criminal code. I think I have heard Rosenberg say, probably on Nicolle's show, that to claim "collusion" is not a crime because it is not in the statute is ridiculous. He (on another show) made the comparison to the term "bank heist", which is not in the criminal code. "A bank heist is not a crime because it is not in the criminal code!" No, Rosenberg pointed out, but "bank robbery" is. Jeremy Bash pointed out that WE DO NOT KNOW if the Trump interpreter was in the room the entire time. It would be so important to know if he decided to rely just on the TRUSTWORTHY Russian interpreter for the most sensitive discussion points. I really enjoyed the Steve Schmidt segments. I know posters here despise him, but he is a good interview.
  17. I completely agree -- I know there are plenty of Nicolle-disdainers among the MSNBC watchers, but she does a great job as interviewer on her show, and after some initial jitters tonight, she handled the show very well. Was this the first time she has filled in for Rachel? I know she has subbed for Brian Williams many times. And after admitting she could not act out a transcript like Rachel (and who could?), she did a fine job of reading some pretty fascinating opening statements. Nicolle has the ability not to need to be the center of attention, so lets news and interviewees become the focus, while keeping everyone on topic and making me laugh when she is just astonished at some behavior over at team POTUS. And Rachel appears to be out for the week -- at least, she will not be here tomorrow. Lawrence O'Donnell asked if he could look forward to seeing Nicolle at 9 PM on Wednesday, and she said "it won't be me," with Lawrence replying, "I guess I'll just be surprised." And I liked that she acknowledged the irony of her filling in for Rachel when she said to Lawrence, "Gee, I used to be the resident Republican here, now look at me!" (I like that she said "resident" instead of "token".)
  18. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! PURCHASED AND WATCHED! I can't believe they cut that scene; it was incredibly moving. Bright's heart was breaking so many ways: for Fancy, for not being able to do anything about it, for losing the station, and for his little daughter. And the emerald phone was spectacular. His daughter's name is the word for "sweet", so when he just said the words "Dulci. Sweet. Tropics." -- it was like each word was a tragic short story. (I assume "tropics" means she contracted malaria or something like it.) I should have guessed that the one time Amazon told me that this was not the U.K. version, it would be the U.K. version. I think the poor harangued employees on the chat line are provided with very little useful information, and this one guessed that "U.S. format" (for the DVDs) meant "U.S. version".
  19. Did you buy your DVDs in the U.S. or U.K.? The U.K. format is the longer version, but the U.S. format is the shorter version, according to Amazon. The U.K. DVDs will not play in a U.S. machine.
  20. a-HA! That is what they have done in the past. I think I will order the DVDs and hope for the best. If I get them to promise in advance that they are the U.K. version, I can return them if they are NOT! I really want to see Bright raking the leaves. ETA: The Amazon chat person said that the DVD version on sale in U.S. format is the PBS version.
  21. Same with Poldark (new version), which I stopped watching after season one because of the cuts. Thank you so much for the information about Prime versions and the DVDs. I thought the U.S. Prime version was the same as PBS!
  22. Thank you! I actually went back to look at that section to make sure I had not zoned out. (I don't think I looked away at all during the episode!) And it did seem that there was very little of Miss Fraziel in this episode, so a cut scene helps explain that. I really appreciate seeing her, as her eyes are exactly the eyes of John Thaw, and it really is like having the older Morse hovering over the show. Did you get the DVDs or did you see this in Britain? I was thinking of getting the DVDs, but have been burned by ordering the "full UK" version, and having that not be true. I have gotten refunds when this happened (with "Lewis" episodes), but I can't keep ordering and returning PBS versions!
  23. There was no Morse at Bright's house in the PBS version -- it was "bullets from another gun," then scenes at the school, then discovery of Ivory, then farewell to Trewlove.
  24. It sounds like you have seen the missing scene? When did this scene occur in the show -- before Trewlove's exit?
