  1. I am one of those adult women who is way too old to love Harry Styles but there I was on my couch watching the show live for the first time in ages and cringing through every sketch and every weird face he pulled while singing (he did sound great except for the regrettable falsetto that he can't pull off live). He seems incredibly well liked in the industry and I really like his voice and find him ridiculously charismatic so I hope he succeeds. I did think his skit acting was pretty awkward, Justin Timberlake's personality makes my skin crawl but I love him on SNL and I felt like they were trying that route with Harry but he felt out of place to me. Every interview or clip I've ever seen of Harry he is extremely relaxed and charming and I thought he was strangely devoid of that in skits and while singing but maybe nerves got the best of him being without his former band mates for the first time ever on the show. When they first showed Family Feud I thought Kate was playing present day Harry and Harry was playing Mick and I laughed. Her Kristen Stewart was pretty great but I would have loved to see her play Harry as they kind of both have the megawatt smiles with dimples but he also has a super deep voice that she might not have been able to pull off like she does for Bieber. I usually really enjoy that skit but it was a big meh for me that night. As for Jimmy and the rest of the show, I thought there were some good bits (the United/Pepsi and Spicer using Veggie Tales for his Passover story) and I was excited to see Rachel Dratch, but yikes, was she the only person willing to show up for Jimmy? I thought their revisit of those characters would have made me laugh way more than it did since I now live in the area and they are so spot on it kills me sometimes but it just didn't land for me. The rest of the episode was fine, not great. Leslie's "Manchester by the Sea" crack did made me laugh. Did they really call Jared Kushner a twink in the opening sketch or did I mishear? I have zero nice things to say about him but I really was kind of shocked they would go there as it kind of just sounded like a homophobic jab more than anything.
  2. I was thinking the exact same thing while watching, we got Archie hot and heavy with teacher and then it's been all hand holding and chaste kisses since then. I hope the little hook up stays secret OR Betty does find out and is like, I'm with Juggie WHY would I care about who you two kiss? That being said, I'm gonna need Betty and Jughead to move beyond the PG stuff soon. They've been put through the emotional ringers that usually lead to steamier stuff on these kinds of shows. I typically love Jughead but his little speech to Betty about how different he is was a little eye roll worthy since he has been privy to her families messed up dynamic and knows she isn't perfect. Her heart was in the right place with the birthday celebration and you would think since Jughead seems happy with her he would have taken it more in stride. I did like the flash of insecurity about Archie with her, that is a very real fear to harbor and I don't blame him for that. I kind of thought the whole night brought them closer together in the end in that booth and hashing it out was more adult than we've seen the actual grown ups. Chuck is a very good villain (the actor is so good looking and does menacing well). Loved Betty going in on him for his Norte Dame Pity Party, poor baby. She has a steel spine. I have a feeling he's going to end up doing something very bad or something bad will happen to him by the end of the season, he is not going to let this go. Alice Cooper is from the wrong side of the tracks and knows FP from back in the day...I love it. I was confused about her bringing Advil and water to Betty the next morning as I don't remember Betty even drinking or seeming drunk. Veronica pointing out that Cheryl has a gross obsession with her dead brother is the highlight of the series for me so far.
  3. This show! The maple syrup drama is possibly the most ridiculous storyline I've ever seen on the CW and I watch Jane the Virgin and Crazyexgirlfriend! I was waiting for Jughead to point out to Archie that they are just trading one redhead in for another and maaaaaaybe point out that they are creepy AF but no dice. The borderline erotic interaction between Mrs. Blossom and Cheryl when they reminisce about Jason to Archie is laid on as thick as Cheryl's maple red lipstick and he's just this dumb golden retriever puppy about the whole thing. Never change Archie, it's kind of fun to hate him. I do not ship Cheryl and Archie, she is too good for him (and she's borderline cray so that's saying something). Bughead continue to be cute and sweet and supportive of each other and so normal in the face of their chaotic home lives. Please let me keep them, they are the two teenaged characters with brains and moral compasses and deserve each other. Alice Cooper (my phone tries to autocorrect that to Malice) is hilarious. Hal deserved that rock, he is a douche. So is she going to be working at the school as the newspaper advisor or something or does their school regularly hire adults to write exposes on students families? I like that she seems to be taking her younger daughters new relationship in stride considering her other daughter is pregnant with twins! By their enemies family! As least Jughead is just a "hobo" and not a freaky redhead cult member, step up imho. Veronica and Ethel's storyline was decent. I can't get a good read on Ethel and kiiiind of want her to end up the big bad just for fun. Veronica is doing a good job to ellicit sympathy as a poor little rich girl. Love her and Kevin as friends, he seems to revel in her drama and charisma and be reviled by her simultaneously. Her dad is pretty much a cartoon monster, can't wait to meet him and see him square off with the rest of the town. If he doesn't have a mustache and wear loud double breasted pinstripe suits I will be so disappointed.
  4. Film Noire your post about costumes is part of what makes coming to these comments so incredible and enriching to the viewing experience, thank you for that! Tarzan keeps popping up on Netflix and that review inspired me to watch it.
  5. My take on the final Jane/Celeste/Perry showdown (I did read the book ages ago but I'm only speculating based on what the show gave us) I don't necessarily think every business trip was an excuse for him to be picking up women and raping them (not to give this monster any benefit of the doubt). The timing of Jane's rape coinciding with Celeste possibly being pregnant with the twins or in the delicate limbo of IVF treatments (which may have made him feel emasculated) makes me wonder if he was acting out his aggression on a stranger because he didn't want to take it out on his pregnant wife and it was an isolated incident (or one of few) and that's why he recognized her. The expression on his face registered as recognition to me and that's when he seemed to realize it was OVER for him and he just went berserk with nothing left to lose. ASkars was chilling in this role, his physicality was so imposing and the way he stalked around the party looking for his prey was terrifying. I got such Eric Northman vibes when he came out in just the leather pants and white tank top and had to remind myself he was Perry and not my favorite Viking Vamp. Everything great I think about Nicole Kidman has already been said but really this entire cast of women has just been thrilling to watch. I have loved Reese since Man in (on?) the Moon and to see her in her 40s producing and starring in content like this is wonderful. Laura Dern was perfection as Renata, and Shailene really shone for me in her moments with Ziggy and realizing Perry was her rapist. Zoe Kravitz has always come off as a little too subdued in other things but was perfect in this and you could see her mind working behind her eyes as she watched them and sprung into action. I had tears in my eyes as I watched her. Yes, Perry being the big bad was a huge coincidence and is kind of whatever but it played a little better in the book to me. I think Jane would have jumped in to defend Celeste regardless and they could have bonded over the fathers of their children having violent inclinations without the Perry coincidence, but it's a show/book so I will allow it. In real life it would be too much to take in. Edited to add, I would watch these women do an anthology style show a la the Ryan Murphy shows just to see them all act together again.
  6. I had to watch twice because every time Archie is the focus of a scene I start scrolling through my FB feed and lose track of the plot. KJ isn't a bad actor but there is something that doesn't quite fit with his acting/characterization with the noir vibe they are going for with everyone else. Betty and even Jughead are naive (I had to laugh at the SHOCK that a dangerous biker gang might sell drugs) but the way the actors portray them sells it better than Archie's brand of naïveté. I love Jughead and think Cole is doing a good job but he has an acting tic of always looking like he is suppressing a smile during various serious moments that takes me out of the scene. I am embarrassingly, fully aboard the SS Bughead ship but agree with other posters re: wishing they had waited and drawn out the chemistry and fast tracking to bf/gf. Maybe after Archie confronted Jughead about FP being a Serpent in front of a baby shower like a total dweeb, Betty could have confronted him about keeping it from her after they had been getting so close and that would have been a good time for him to plant one on her. I am wondering if they are going to be moving beyond the chaste kisses bathed in light. They both come off as inexperienced in the love department so it will be interesting to see how that aspect develops, especially with Betty's sister being an expecting teen. Veronica needs a storyline that lasts longer than an episode, they are wasting a great actress on one liners and quips and supporting her new BFF Betty (which are all good things but she is obviously meant for more). The Vanity Flair flub cracked me up. The adult storylines and dynamics are infinitely more interesting than what they are giving the teens, minus the sleuthing duo. Alice Cooper is killing me, Madchen must have so much fun spitting out those lines. I was confused as to whether or not she followed through on the appointment her husband made for her when they were teens or if Polly is the result of that pregnancy. Or maybe down the line we'll get to meet the baby she had while in the care of the same nuns that had Polly captive. There was a lot left unsaid or alluded to during the Coopers fight that contradicts the picture perfect, Stepford existence that Jughead talked about in his narration at the beginning of the episode. I am definitely interested to see how all of these lines are going to intersect and tie together by the final episode.
  7. Amen. But seriously, at least a Duncan had the connection to Lily, his twisty and potentially incestuous feelings for Veronica and was a real potential suspect to make his continued presence tolerable. Archie has nothing high stakes going for him like all of the other characters and it drags him down. I'm hoping the murder connects back to Miss Grundy as a case of mistaken identity with the two redheads. Having him be the real target would be a hard thing for Archie to live with and is a good story. I think the Serpents and FP are red herrings and burned the car to cover up their connection to a dead kid.
  8. Aw I was in a super grumpy mood yesterday when I wrote about never wanting to buy their stuff due to the silly product placement. Hermione is practically mother of the year compared to Mrs. Cooper and Mrs. Blossom. I like the relationship she has with Veronica, she is warm and loving but still the adult in the relationship. Bonus points for her not seeing her daughter as just an extension of herself and their name. Obviously the forgery stuff shows she isn't an angel but her whole storyline with Hirams business dealings is shady. I look forward to his return. Is he meant to be a Riverdale alum as well? I would accept Robin Tunney from The Craft as Skeets missing wife if Neve won't appear. He looks great even with the bleary eyes and scruff. Hard living looks good on both Jones guys but I hope maybe Juggie will have his family in tact and happier at some point. Lastly....I really really want to know what the deal was with Cheryl and Jason but at the same time it freaks me out. The actress plays every other beat like a jealous girlfriend and it is so icky.
  9. Solid episode and a relief to finally be out of the angst of Archie's music and football drama, can that be over forever please? Really highlighted what a snooze that has been for me. Integrating him more into the mystery did huge favors for the character and he was actually a good friend to Betty and Jughead. I suspect his apology to Betty for not being there for her during all of this drama was slightly motivated by him realizing that the closeness he witnessed between Bughead was because Juggy has been the one there for her. There is almost no chance he won't get between them at some point but I will enjoy every sweet and supportive moment between the two while I can. I don't see the affection as one sided at all, she was very comfortable with his hand on her shoulder, holding hands during he walk home, going in for a kiss when she could have hugged him if she was friend zoning him. Her reaction to Veronica's questions was of a girl who likes him likes him. I also didn't see her being shoehorned into the police station scene as others have mentioned. She was at the lockers with Archie when Jughead was dragged out so it seemed natural for her to meet him at the police station for support. Bughead forever! I'm in my 30s with small children and I'm so tired, let me have this :) Jughead being yanked out of school on the basis of a murder board that he and Betty are working on, a very vague bullying reference and an incident when he was a kid was maybe the dumbest thing I've seen on a show that is wonderfully dumb as a rule. Curious to know what his alibi is because that wasn't cleared up and Fred doctoring time cards to protect him is will eventually bite them. I don't think Jughead did it and in all likelihood he was just alone that day reading The Metamorphisis and listening to Pink Floyd on vinyl and so he has no one to verify an alibi but it's a loose end. Please show, don't make me love and empathize with this character a la Cassidy "Beaver" Casablancas only to have him be the big bad. The timeline of Fred and FPs friendship and business issues is off and made no sense in the context of other things we've been told. I don't buy FPs sad sack version of events one bit. He had one additional mouth to feed so he stole from his business partner? What hospital bills? The whole line about them being partners makes no senseI did like that Archie was angry that his dads decision to cut FP off impacted Jughead, even if I understand why Fred would make that call if his side of the story is true. Looking forward meeting his mom down the line. All of the Covergirl stuff makes me never want to buy their products again.
  10. This show is...not that great for a CW offering if I'm measuring it up to the standards of Crazy Ex-girlfriend and Jane the Virgin...even Gossip Girl back in the day had me way more hooked by episode 6. BUT. I am enjoying watching Betty sleuth her way around town with Jughead and be cute in general. She is the star for me with Jughead not far behind. She has a 1950s good girl vibe and look but a backbone of steel. Her parents are terrible in a hilarious way and her moms laughter about the dad being the killer was a great moment. Veronica has been more appealing in previous episodes and I agree with other posters who have picked up on her having a more sapphic chemistry with female costars. Hoping her story picks up a bit with her mom forging her name on those documents (which makes zero sense but TV oh well). Archie's storyline is so boring it's ridiculous especially with his supposed bffs traipsing around following leads in a murder mystery and secret pregnancy reveals. Stage fright? Hardly riveting TV. Jughead has a sort of grungy cuteness that I enjoy so I love him being paired with Betty's perky preppy smart girl but I had to rewind when they kissed....was there some other moment in the show where they had enough sexual tension to justify that?? It came out of nowhere to me even though my little shipper heart did a fist pump. I took Betty's look up at the loudspeaker and then leaving in hot pursuit of her own storyline as making the choice for herself/sister/the mystery and maybe a little towards Jughead. I'm sure Archie will feel a twinge of jealousy if they get together (she was into that kiss as far as I could tell) and she will be conflicted (because duh I've watched TV before) but I'm interested to see how it pans out. They aren't nearly as angst ridden as my usual preferences but I love their simpler chemistry and Cole is more my speed than AJ look wise. I'm glad he is twenty something in real life otherwise...yuck. I'm wondering if Jason was somehow hooked up with the gang to sell the drugs to get enough money to get them out of town. Maybe it's the gang that was following Betty and Jughead to recover the drugs and knowing Polly was involved with him and then set fire to destroy any evidence of their involvement. ETA just read a recap on another site that also covered the previous episode a bit and whoops we already knew he was selling drugs (I need to pay attention) I think the gang is involved in his murder or was at least following Betty and Jughead to recover the product and then destroyed evidence of a connection between them.
  11. Regarding Rose being in the crowd when Zaz was killed, my guess and what I thought was established with the dent in the wall from the bell cart is she had the dead bellboy do it and then offed him with the corkscrew to tie up the loose end. Also completely on board with Rose having made a big transformation from man to woman, I had the same thought while watching and this show is obviously willing to go just about anywhere with wild stories. Is there a timeline established regarding her initial affair with Luisa and her marriage to Emilio? It would help make sense of the five year lull in Sin Rostro activities. Has Sin Rostro gone from trafficking drugs to trafficking criminals in need of a new identity and face, hence the elaborate plastic surgery facilities? Love that this show keeps me guessing, it brings back fond memories of trying to guess the big bad on Veronica Mars!
