I'm not sure I want to watch the last one because there wasn't enough Queenie, and mostly about the locusts or whatever that shit was.

love Dominion but the extended cut, not the regular one. I've watched it probably a dozen times (streaming, not in the theater).

One of my cousins isn't allowed to post any photos of her grandchildren on Facebook, even in a small, private, cousins group we set up.

I forbid my mom from posting photos of me on her Facebook I'm without my permission. I also know she's proud of me and we've come to an agreement I'll approve a photo of us for her to post on Mother's Day and her birthday.

When I was a kid I used to get so mad when I overheard her talking about me. She had no boundaries and didn't respect my life is not for her to discuss with others. I have told her she can share good things like my move and that I got a new job at a high level. But nothing in detail. None of her friends business!

It's been so fucking cold here in Seattle that I haven't taken a shower since Thursday. I mean in the low teens at night and mid twenties during the day. We have an old house with no central heating, just space heaters and radiators. We can't use anything too high watt because we'll blow fuses. I'm miserable.

Duck Brand window treatments (shrink wrap for windows) makes a huge difference. It's easiest found online. It takes a little practice but once you get the hang of it, it goes up quickly.

  4. I would like to see Jack and Erin get back together. They're obviously meant for each other and have grown over the years.

I would also like to see Danny and Maria get together, because why not.

I don't want to see anyone die, no dramatic or surprise pregnancies, don't really care of Jamie and Eddie get pregnant though I would suspect that's in the cards given it's the final season.

I think the very last scene will be around the table with Joe, Sean, Jack, and Nicky present. I would like to see this family dinner include Anthony, Jack (because he's back with Erin), Maria (regardless if she is with Danny). I'm a fan of 'life goes on' finales so I don't need anything else. Wrap it up like most episodes and call it a series.

I kind of like knowing that the artist, Betty Flowers, will never know what happened to her little painting.

If you change your mind, I'm pretty sure there is a way to register what you took and where it ended up.

This also reminds me I need to find my local Little Free Library.

Guys, I'm not encouraging anyone to do this, but this is what happened to me . . .

I had enough and put in my two weeks notice, even without another job lined up. I instantly got a call offering me a raise to stay, and there was a discussion regarding my unfair treatment at work, as well as harassment I had experienced.

While I think the raise should have been more, and after everything I've seen with my employer am still proceeding with a lot of caution, I decided to stay for now.

I truly hope this works out for you, and I don't want to sound like a pessimist... But... Be prepared to be let go at some point, there are strong precedents that companies offer a raise and promise of change while quietly making decisions how to complete the responsibilities of the position without that person. They just need time and a token raise keeps the person around a little longer buying them time.

Is this the norm with Next Door--the daily queries re: gunshots, helicopters overhead, sirens nearby, loud vehicles, firecrackers, etc?  These people need to move to the country where they'll only hear birds tweeting & maybe cows mooing. We have passenger jets, military jets, traffic helicopters, police helicopters, all kinds of sirens that can cause noises. ND folks have begun to ignore these nervous people.

    I don't belong to Nextdoor.

A cesspool of misogyny as I've always understood it, but apparently there are pockets of it that are pleasant.  But what it is, meaning what kind of website, I don't really know -- a forum?  Wikipedia says it's a "social news aggregation, content rating, and discussion website".

It's like a giant message board with all the topics for all the things. Some pockets are awful, others are great. Maybe you're thinking of 4Chan which is 100% a cesspool of misogyny, racism, and other things the FBI is interested in.

I belong to subreddits (forums) for my favorite TV show, one about long expired food stuff found at their parents and grandparents house (I feel so seen!), one for Vegas locals, Am I the Asshole is always a good time, Best of Reddit updates is usually good, too.  I belonged to one ahead of the Star Wars Celebration back in 2021 that helped me figure out what I was getting into, and when I was in GA there was a subreddit that led me to a small community Discord I still participate in.

Each subreddit has their own rules and moderation policies.

I do, however, take issue with logging into NextDoor the next morning and finding a bunch of "What is that noise??" posts from that time.  Gee, that's a stumper -- it's midnight on New Year's Eve, whatever could it be?

    Aliens.

My house in GA was 2 miles from where the Braves currently play. There were fireworks after every Friday home game, in addition to a short burst if they scored. I refuse to use Nextdoor but I'd look on my Ring neighborhood (just a hair less racist, probably because you have to have a Ring to use so it's a smaller user-pool) and every week right after the game was over the community was flooded with "did anyone else hear those gunshots?! They just kept going".

  10. A downside to living in Vegas is that the state doesn't participate in any lotteries, including Powerball or Mega Millions, so if I want to participate I'd either have to drive 30 minutes to Stateline (Primm) and stand in a huge line there, or get a friend in another state to pick up a couple tickets for me (and paid via Venmo), or remind my mom to buy a few tickets.

America's Test Kitchen recommended this one, and it has worked great.

I love Simple Human products. 100% worth their hefty price tag.

Thanks, all! I prefer the buy empty and fill with whatever you want, partially because of aesthetic preferences and partially because of product preferences (cruelty-free/vegan and annoyingly sensitive skin, as you may already know from the FitBit band rant, haha!)-- apparently I'm a fancy delicate diva who just wants it all in the world of soap!

If the Simple Human one is outside your budget I had great luck with a knockoff from Amazon. I also personally used this one from OXO.

I hate all of the refillable soap dispensers! Or at least the 5 or 6 I have tried. Why do they all clog and/or drip? Come on. Does anyone have one that doesn't do these annoying things?!

I've had great luck with OXO Brand if you want to start with an empty one.

We do. It's just Soft Soap brand. TBF, my husband washes it completely when he re-fills it.

This is what I do, too. Soft Soap and the Target brand equivalent in a similar container. Those things are indestructible.

Don't know why there was a montage of baby pictures of all the women cast members (and Maya and Kristen) over the song, but I appreciated it.

I think it was there to compliment or call out to a montage scene in Barbie

I love joke swap, and look forward to it every year, but I don't think anyone but Jost and Che could pull it off.

Dumb question but who was with Kate when they announced the first song?

  14. I hate "Do They Know it's Christmas Time". The song is highly problematic (Google can help out there) and, in addition to the highlighted problems (via Google), not everyone celebrates Christmas or cares that it's Christmas.

As someone who didn't get to celebrate Christmas or Christmas aspects in the house*, as a kid, but was dragged around to look at the lights and forced to participate in the "Christmas play" at school (lookin' at you, 1980s) and got to see all my friends open presents and have pretty lights & trees, I have a pretty poor relationship with the "holiday season".  I'm trying to change but this song and it's assumption that everyone cares that it's "Christmas time" rubs me the wrong way.

*I grew up Jewish, we did Hanukkah but there was no "Hanukkah Bush" or "Hanukkah lights". My mom was staunch "those are Christmas things". I also wasn't allowed to have Cadbury Creme Eggs or other "Easter Candy" but there are plenty of pictures of me with the Easter Bunny. Therapy (and adult money) helps but I'll never change my mind about this song.

People actually give a shit about socks, and something as specific as Christmas-themed socks?  One really does learn something new almost every day; What an odd idea was my reaction, but apparently I just hadn't previously come across this tradition.

Fun / crazy socks have been a trend for awhile. You can get custom printed socks and there are companies that specialize in printing pet photos on socks..

I've been asked to organize and run a 'Christmas sock exchange' game at a luncheon.  Everyone is asked to bring a wrapped pair of Christmas socks.  I'm used to how we run our 'Dirty Santa' exchange at the library's Christmas party, but this one probably has to be a little different. The way we do it in our department is that everyone who is participating brings a gift and puts it under the little tabletop Christmas tree.  When we are just about ready to begin, the person organizing it asks for everyone who will be participating to raise their hands (so he/she can get a count). Then slips are numbered from 1 to whatever (depending on how many people are participating) and each person draws a number. Number one goes first and chooses a gift (and has to open it so everyone can see what they got).  Then number 2 can either choose a gift from under the tree or take an opened gift from that first person (one rule is that they are not allowed to choose and open a gift and then decide to exchange it). The other rule is that once a gift has been chosen and 'stolen' once (or maybe twice, I can't remember) it is 'retired' and can't be stolen again. It's a lot of fun when you have about 30 people in the group.

But, with all gifts being socks, I'm not sure if this would work, since part of the fun each year is looking over the array of gift bags, small boxes, larger boxes and deciding which one might have a great gift.  But these packages will likely all be about the same shape and size (whether in a bag or a box).

Do you think I can follow the usual way of doing this exchange? (Part of the fun is looking over the array of gift boxes, bags, large and small, and trying to guess which one might have a great gift in them.  These will likely all be similar wrapped items in shape and size.) People could still choose to 'steal' a pair of socks from someone if they really like them and that person could then get another gift from the table.

Mainly I'm just wondering if 'sock exchange' games are run differently than the usual Dirty Santa game.

A Dirty Santa sock exchange sounds fun. There are some expensive novelty socks out there though, you may want to put a price range, or a price cap to not have it too imbalanced.

This year, they said gifts fir the kids only, as we all don’t need anything anymore, plus it’s stressful on what to buy.  I still want to buy a dual gift for the daughters and husbands.  One gift for both.  What’s good?

You can respect their request for no more stuff by gifting either cash or food.

    4 hours ago, Bastet said:

I'd say honor their request just to do gifts for the kids.

@kristen111 the best give you can give them, is what they asked for. Nothing. If you feel inclined, how about a handmade gift certificate for child-care w/ a gift card for a night out (I know you said no gift cards but they very clearly said no gifts, so...)

Speaking of new technology.  It is odd to me kids being born today and possibly even a little older will never had owned a car with a key to start the ignition

Sure they will. There are so many cars that still require keys, and so many cars w/ keys that will be around and drivable in 15-18 years.

One of my neighbors said her sister, who lives in FL, recently bought a new Corolla and it came with a key 🙀. I thought keys went out 15 or 20 years ago.

Key FOBs are not standard on every car (as your posts points out). Nearly every car I've rented between 2017 and now came with a keyed start.

Right.  One thing I didn’t like tho was when the new car stopped at every light.  The stop then go droveme nuts.  I rather the car idle at the light .. not stop.

You can disable that feature but it's designed to help reduce emissions and be better for the environment.

Last weekend, my best friend and I talked about how, while we certainly don't want to hear children, it's sad we know there are kids on both of our blocks (including right next door, in my case, at least part time [joint custody]) yet we never hear or see them other than as they head from the car to the house, because they never do anything outside.

I moved in over the summer and heard kids next door. The family has 2 and they always have people over. I can't hear them when I am inside unless they're out front riding bikes. I love it.

I just clicked on their mobile browser and it was called Opera. What's that?  I'm taking my smartphone to Best Buy tomorrow (where I bought  it) to see if anything else is going on.  Even my beloved Classic-Solitaire seems to be dying and its site now says they have all new Solitaires. No way, please!  I gotta have my Classic-Solitaire 😬

Opera is browser. Their app and website icon looks like this image.png.9d4a92ddb194444da7f97c1ad78db90f.png

I see, thanks. I didn't realize I wouldn't qualify for the ACA. That's one of my main concerns-health insurance. I need to find a way to get some type of health insurance quickly.

I didn't say you wouldn't qualify. I said you probably wouldn't qualify for financial assistance. Their individual plans are expensive.

Quitting a job without having another lined up requires a lot of planning, or a rock-solid financial support system because the safety nets you qualify for if the company decides to terminate employment don't exist.

Don't count on finding a new job in your field right away, either, or finding a retail job, especially right after the holidays. For all those 'help wanted' signs, companies still aren't hiring.
