  1. It also sounds like he can't do math - nine hours until 1 a.m. is 4:00. Six hours until 1 a.m. is 7;00. Where does the 5 figure into this, at all? (presumably it was a little after 4, so one of the hands would have been at 4 . . . don't remember what the clock was saying. If it was 4:00, the minutes hand would be at 12 and he wouldn't have thought they had six hours until 1:00; if it was 4:35, she probably wouldn't have said they had nine hours). Maybe he was trying to cover his utter failure at being able to subtract hours from 1 a.m. and get to where he was, by trying to be "cute" about not being able to read an analog clock.. Regardless, it's a really annoying affectation. I actually saw what they liked about the dress, but I was so predisposed to hate it because he's such a twee little jerk. Grow out of it, already. It's not cute. It probably never was, but it certainly isn't now. I can sympathize a little in that I always have to stop more than I think I should to figure out what time it is in Australia, for example, compared to home. It's straightforward but I tend to have to really break it down to get it right for some reason. Some sort of mental blind spot of mine that I find embarrassing. .He may have been embarrassed that he couldn't figure out how many hours it was until 1:00 a.m even with a clock staring right in front of him. Jeez, just subtract where you are from 12 and add one.
  2. Agree with the two posters above about Leah's situation. I also think it's rational for Leah not to confess too much to the camera - it's not necessary and might have consequences that she hasn't had a chance to fully consider. If she weren't on this show, nobody would be filming things that could be used against her later on, either in court or in her community. Not everybody needs to know everything. It does seem that she's drawing distinctions between her own issues with the pain killers and "real" addicts, but that's a pretty typical thing to do as well, and if she is able to get off of whatever she's been on, it'll be some time to come to a real understanding of the whole situation. I don't expect somebody just going in to rehab to have the kind of thinking about the situation that somebody with several years of sobriety under her belt would have. And whatever it is, I hope it takes. But the craziness won't abate immediately even if she's off the drugs. Her brain will still be screwed up from it for a while.
  3. Good idea. Wish they hadn't all been assigned (or did they choose?) a male and a female model; my initial thought on male imprisoning smaller female was that it had too much potential icky sex slave vibe to it, and in a hurry in an early challenge, maybe it's best to play it safe and not land in the bottom by being both unsuccessful and seriously off-putting. Also, the grandiose gates make it seem unnecessary to have a large imposing creature standing guard over something smaller and less threatening looking. It's overkill, story-wise. If you have the gates, you don't need a monster gatekeeper, and why have the gates if you don't have something particularly difficult to contain within them?
  4. Thanks. Seems like a sensible to thing to have.
  5. Kansas? Or does KASPER refer to something other than Kansas Adult Supervised Population Electronic Repository? (Kansas Dept of Corrections offender search) (first hit when I googled it to see what it was - wasn't sure if it was some sort of diagnostic questionnaire, although those are easy for addicts to just lie on, or a quick criminal background check; other hits were about people or products named Kasper). Does this have more to do with Kansas being pretty conservative these days, or do they have a particularly bad drug problem, or were they relatively early to have an increase in opiate abuse during this current upcycle? (it's a very cyclical thing, opiate abuse, as is cocaine abuse - the generation after a major increase in use of one or the other tends to shy away from the one, meanwhile, use of the other drug tends to rise as people underestimate its dangers).
  6. Or he's just taken a lot of selfies. For a supposed underwear model, the pictures circulated at the time don't exactly look professional. http://dailyentertainmentnews.com/tv/nathan-griffith-teen-mom-jenelle-evans-new-boyfriend/
  7. If you google "Nathan Griffith model," it seems that back when he first showed up on the show, he was described as an underwear model/MMA fighter, and there was an obscure "modeling agency" that listed him but then deleted his profile after it seemed he was going to be on the show. Cue people speculating that he wasn't a real boyfriend, but somebody MTV found through this agency to pretend to be Jenelle's new boyfriend http://www.celebdirtylaundry.com/2013/jenelle-evans-fake-boyfriend-nathan-griffith-hired-mtv-pretend-date-photos-1219/ I also googled the name of the "agency", though, and it just looks to be a local (Myrtle Beach) photographer(s)' shop - http://www.exceedimages.com/ - so maybe he posed for some pics for them that they proposed to sell as stock footage - or he had his picture taken by them and agreed to let them put it up on their site as a sample of their work. Who knows. Small time, at best.
  8. He's the one who went to court, seeking 50/50 custody or, barring that, unsupervised and increased visitation. Her more restrictive alternatives were raised in the context of the legal action that he initiated.
  9. Presumably, the charge is a wobbler (violation of a statutory provision that, at the prosecutor's and judge's discretion, can be treated as either a misdemeanor or a felony (the definition of a felony basically is that's it a criminal offense punishable by a year or more in jail or prison, while a misdemeanor is punishable by a year or less in jail). Based on the facts, I'd see this one going down as a misdemeanor, but the statutory provision it'd be charged under would be the same as if the facts of the case were more severe. I think some of the comments here have underestimated the potential violence of trying to yank a ring off her finger - it'd be pretty easy to have broken her finger. But that didn't happen, and it wouldn't shock me at all if the whole thing was overblown - or underblown. Good basic discussion of wobblers here: http://www.nolo.com/legal-encyclopedia/what-wobbler.html
  10. Chelsea and her family were pretty ambivalent about the supervised visitation center, too. Granted, Aubree's not going to get into a car accident or anything there, but it's also somewhat depressing and exposes her to a lot of additional people who wouldn't be there if they weren't screwing up their own lives. Better not to have too much of that normalized.
  11. I think you just answered the question - little competition dancers who like tricks and gymnastics, and who can have a safe little asexual crush on the only remaining blond dude (because otherwise, why not Edson or Jim or Virgil? (I'm leaving out Neptune only because I find that I really can't ever remember him - the others are pretty distinct to me, albeit in Derek's case, only for occasionally hitting a really amazing split jump or something). I don't mind Derek, I just think he's pretty young and so isn't showing as much emotional range as he may down the road. But of the five male stage dancers, I liked Jim and Moises best, then Darion, and had Derek and Edson sort of tied, with Edson the better partner dancer. I though both Derek and Edson were kept around over Moises simply because they were taller and they wanted some bigger dancers to pair with the women, given that they knew Jim and Virgil were sticking around for the long haul. But Derek and Edson always had that emotional connection with little dance studio and cheerleading kids, I figured. My votes for going home next would be Derek and Neptune (because I still have only a vague idea of who he is), but I can see pretty much anybody but Virgil and Gaby being at risk at this point. Hailee's growing on me but sometimes I don't connect with her emotionally - it can be too technical.
  12. I did a little googling, too, and from what I could tell, two factors: black and red inks both tend to fade; and the eye-catching quality of these tattoos has a lot to do with the stark contrasts between the red and the black. However, one of the things I read commented that traditional Japanese tattoos also use a lot of red and black and age well, so I'm thinking it would make sense to talk to a prospective tattoo artist about how they planned to take these factors into consideration, and possibly take some cues from the Japanese model to think ahead about what will and will not work well over time. I would tend to think from the articles that good use of contrasting black and empty space - and thus use of a large swatch of skin - is key to a lot of these designs working - it seems like empty space could provide compositional space for the design to still stand out as bold and stark and filled with contrast, even as the depth of the colors faded, that and very distinct borders and linework, such that the boldness would last even if the intensity of the color faded. I think some of the busyness that they encouraged, like those dots fading in and out of Marisa's, are an example of something that looks pretty good now but will lose its impact as it fades. I did like Craig's quite a lot - especially that bizarre contrast with the insects, which really seemed to fit the style. It's a little post-Berlin-Wall German, and I wonder whether that's going to look as clever as it does now down the road, but then again I'm not the sort to put this stuff on my body. I'd prefer to get a print and put it on the wall. And for somebody who's really into tattoos, it seems like it would be a big commitment to use that much of your skin for one really great Trash Polka style tattoo, as it's not going to have the same impact if it's small or it's crowded by other stuff. It needs the open space to breathe, On Marisa's - I didn't see the balls at all at first and could not understand what they disliked so much about the face. I only saw it as a little too dark and maybe heavyhanded on the cheekbone. Once you see it, though, it's hard not to see it, and I assume that's why their reaction was so strong. Maybe guys are more likely to see it instantly than I am, but I didn't see it at all until it was pointed out. Tyler and Marisa seem to work well together, although obviously that's because of the mutual attraction, but boy does he seem to be turning into a petulant child. He flips somebody off again in the previews for next week.
  13. I went digging earlier. I'm thinking it's the one in the episode summary for season 5 episode 22: http://previously.tv/teen-mom-2/messer-gets-a-makeunder/
  14. Eddie was entered *by a friend as a prank* according to this profile from the Sporting News http://www.sportingnews.com/nfl/story/2015-06-24/eddie-jackson-food-network-star-nfl-patriots-dolphins-arkansas-injuries-acl-master-chef-food-truck Just because it wasn't something he thought of doing on his own doesn't make what happened going forward something done in bad faith. Reading the two pieces together, sounds like the friend entered him, he went ahead and went through with it because why not? Anyway, I'd read both pieces before being upset with him about it. He doesn't come off badly to me in either interview. (tvline piece is here: http://tvline.com/2015/08/17/eddie-jackson-food-network-star-winner-interview-bbq-blitz/).
  15. Even then, you've got the question of what happened while the cameras weren't rolling, was any of it faked to fill in a story line, etc. I can see the bit about unequivocal criminal conduct caught on camera, because the context there wouldn't matter. But most of this stuff is going to be more ambiguous. The cameras aren't running on her 24/7, they're turned on for bits and pieces that they elect to use as illustrative or to carry their own version of the story forward. MTV's version of Leah's life isn't Leah's version or anybody else's. I think it's fair to draw the conclusion from it that she's in trouble, but it's multifactorial, and it just adds unnecessary complexity to the judge's task to try to sort out what to trust and what not.
  16. They all say not to use on broken skin, and most are counter-irritants (menthol, capsaicin, etc.) that wouldn't help the pain level if you did break the skin, and/or salicylates (aspirin), which are blood thinners (and I remember some of the tattooers being annoyed by canvases who drank too much, because their blood was thinned). And perhaps also not a good thing to inject directly into tissue, as opposed to take by mouth or use topically. And even if they helped with the pain, it seems to me they could muck up the process, as you'd be injecting not just the dye, but also the topical anesthetic, into your tattoo.
  17. Well, this is what the article said: I take that to mean that it's just not sufficiently reliable - things are spliced together from different days or times, some things may be misrepresented, almost everything is out of context . . . and it's too hard to know what to trust and what to disregard. The footage is not done by a neutral arbiter, but by someone looking to create an entertaining TV show, and the goals behind that, and those behind reaching an impartial verdict, are not compatible. I suppose I could see a judge ruling either way as to the admissibility of it, but it would require lots of arguments about what needed to be disregarded, or not, etc. . And I assume MTV doesn't want to be drawn into any court actions about the accuracy of the programming. There are plenty of witnesses - the court and parties can call them. Maybe they can call the camera crew etc as witnesses, based not on what the end product showed, but on what they themselves saw while doing their jobs.
  18. Devin can look good - see modeling shots below - either he is not getting work because he is impossible to work with, or he has decided to commit himself to some stupid selfish bit of performance art for the sake of this show, and thus is impossible to live with, or both. Maybe he had a promising start as a model and went nuts with partying etc. Anyway - shots below confirm work with at least one agency, and some nice shots. If you google him, you'll see there is another model named Devin Clark, who is very pale and has bleached white hair and eyebrows to accentuate this; ANTM Devin Clark goes by Devin LJ Clark. http://www.lookmodelagency.com/portfolio.aspx?nav=1&subnav=12&ltr=all&link=1&sexid=1&size=medium&modelid=796891&subid=10786&mainsubid=10786. .
  19. I know, right? I honestly (barely glancing at the picture) thought it WAS Leah at first - it was only when I read the comment that went with the picture that I looked again and saw it was her little girl. Poor thing.
  20. It's amusing how they equate 5'4" with under 5'. 5'4" is about average! (For normal people that is, not models). And Maleesa, the one who they talk about as being that short, isn't even the shortest in the competition - that would be Courtney, at 5'3". You would definitely notice if anyone was actually under 5'0, but the 5'3 and 5'4 girls don't really stand out, especially since many of the others are only marginally taller at 5'7 or 5'8.
  21. I suspect the arguments and parenting failures are so repetitive that the footage from day to day is pretty interchangeable anyway. That the footage isn't matched up doesn't change my understanding of what's going on in any appreciable way - she failed to get her daughter to her appointment despite having somebody else there at her house who could have taken care of the other kids, and despite having other people she could have called but didn't, etc., etc.
  22. Thanks for reminding me of that vote - I went ahead and voted (once) for Eddie and entered the sweepstakes again Current standings: Christina (first off) & Jay 15% Eddie 12% Emilia (!) 11% Dom 10% Matthew 9% Rue 6% Alex & Arnold 5% Michelle, Rosa, & Sita 4% I suppose anybody at 9% or above has a chance if they really try to goose a following, but I wonder if the network wouldn't be pushing Jay (and maybe Eddie) to get votes, given that it would be hard to explain a Christina win if nobody who's been watching remembers that there was ever a Christina on this show. Actually, I suppose they'd have to encourage everybody to do it, so as not to be accused of putting a thumb on the scale for any particular contestant. I don't know how much this indicates who's hyperactive on the internet (Emilia, Jay, presumably Christina) and who's actually striking a chord with an audience that might actually watch one of these people do a show . . . some of both I suppose. I have to think Rue, Alex, and Arnold doing poorly relative to their performance on the show indicates that they weren't generating much audience excitement, although obviously Arnold has some fans here who are quite fond of him (I find it to be too much of a shtick, personally, but it's a YMMV thing). Vote/results link is here: http://www.foodnetwork.com/shows/food-network-star/sweepstakes/results.html
  23. Hanmiao, the one who's originally from China - her attempt to give Westerners something easier to call her by. She said something about pistachio being a happy nut in Chinese, and it is a nickname that people actually use for people. Here's a little thing on it. http://studymorechinese.com/profiles/blogs/how-to-be-a-happy-nut. .
  24. When I looked about an hour ago only about 1600 people had voted. Granted, that's a big enough sample size for a scientific poll - but not for one where a couple of hundred enthusiastic buddies of a competitor can chime in (and, when it was based on voting, I would expect small rabid groups of followers to be overly represented in both the online polling and the online voting, but neither is necessarily going to match the network's guess of what is larger viewing audience wants).
  25. Either I zoned out, too, or the only showed him proposing to do it, and tasting it. I don't even remember him saying what he was going to do that would make it Cajun, and I was looking for the Cajun waffles, because I read the thread here first before I watched the episode. Maybe it'll show up in the longer version next week. Someone in the other thread was speculating that maybe Guy Fieri wants to stop doing DDD, and that Jay would be a natural to take on that role. I actually thought Eddie filled that role a little better - so much so, though, that I was thinking - no! What a waste of him that would be. He is good around other people, but more natural when he's a more relaxed presence rather than channeling Guy's more manic persona. Him hanging out with other people while cooking in a kitchen was more pleasant to watch than him bantering with a chef who's trying to show off their dish, in their own crowded small restaurant kitchen. But, pretty sure I'm not the target audience, so . . .
