  1. Yeah, you are right about those stats. I mentioned them a few episodes back as well. Many women have to go into hiding or safe houses and have a lot of resources saved up and hidden. The stuff Julia Roberts does in that movie, Sleeping with the Enemy" (about domestic violence), illustrates the fear and extremes one may need to go through to get out of an abusive relationship.
  2. Why are they wasting bullets? Wouldn't sharp sticks be better?
  3. Just to chime in on what COFCINCI said. Even if the people are wealthy, they may want to use their insurance because you have it and you pay for it (via your deduction from your pay) and Perry does work, it is likely that he has insurance. And if you have a job that gives it to you 100% free, why would anyone pay cash, if you can use your insurance! I live in an affluent area (I am not affluent, but our county is considered one of the most expensive in the US-based on some such data) and people want to use their insurance. Most of the psychiatrists and clinical psychologists and clinical social workers that I have worked with all take something because they tend to be affiliated with a hospital (especially the psychiatrist) and they take whatever the hospital takes because of their privileges. I know that it is much easier to be paid in cash, but if I have insurance to cover some of it, I would want to use it, unless (as stated by COFCINCI), I am trying to hide the session. The therapist will know how to do that, especially if it is cash. When I got my training, a lot of discussion was placed on our case notes and the like especially when working with domestic violence victims and how to protect the information from being used against the client if the abuser trys to use it against the victim in court. One last note: in my community, we actually have free counseling and services for domestic violence victims at a special organization for this issue (did my internship there) and it is free. It is a community outreach effort and even in an affluent area, it is needed because there are a lot of people who are not wealthy (or cannot be seen going to a "regular" therapist, and there is also a population of immigrant workers who do the landscaping, housekeeping of the wealthy and get no benefits. They need those services as well. One thing about this place, was tight security. You had to be buzzed in and would have to present yourself in a bullet proof hallway. This was necessary, otherwise, no one would come there, They needed to feel safe. Like we have heard, a high percentage of women are murdered when they try to leave the abuser. The organization I trained at, would help women (and men) with counseling, but also making an escape plan and how to implement it. (saving, hiding money, having a bug-out bag, a separate phone, etc...), for the day they leave. They would also have one of our male volunteers, go to the court with the victim for the court days and to get the restraining order. We also had a Pro Bono attorney to help as well. It is complicated to get out and needs a coordinated effort on many fronts (we also had safe houses to put up a person and children while they hid from the abuser).
  4. I have not read the book, but it would be a real twist if the "bully" is Renata because she has factitious disorder (what used to be called: Munchausen's by Proxy). ETA: And the more I think about it, the more I think it is plausible. Renata (and not Dern's acting), is unhinged. Would anyone think that she is not capable after seeing her go ballistic and threatening her daughter to know the truth? Maybe she is trying to trump up a case against the school to sue them? Maybe she just wants attention? She goes off the deep end over the littlest slights or infractions (the party for one). How come they haven't called the police? Why are they not consoling Amabella? Why have they not taken her to a doctor to be assessed for any additional marks or bruises? Renata is not acting like a normal parent in my eyes. I have read case studies of parents with FD. I show a video to my students of a dad who would smother his infant baby to cause seizures. They caught him because there were cameras in the ICU (where the baby was). In addition (this does not align with Renata) people with a medical or nursing background may often be the abuser (in these cases), as they know and understand drugs and what the medical pros will look for.
  5. So is the interior designer the rapist or not? I was not certain.
  6. Where is/are Taylor when Axe needs a big idea?
  7. I think that part of Celeste's problem is that she emphatically states that she is not a victim. She believes that she is part of the "problem", therefore he is not an abuser. Her thinking needs to change because, until she realizes that her labels don't matter and what is happening is wrong (no matter who starts it), only then will she be able to actually get help or leave. ETA: if memory serves, 2 of the most dangerous times for an abused woman are: 1) when pregnant 2) when they try to leave. If that is still true, there is a chance that the miscarriages could have been caused by abuse.
  8. Could they hang out of the window ANY farther? Geez, on Burn Notice Michael Weston says that you open the window and set up farther back in the room. Geez!
  9. Anyone think that Rosita has a bomb strapped to herself?
  10. Hey, the guy from FTWD has the same hairstyle as the Garbage Patch Kids. Coincidence? I think not.
  11. Ok, so if Hilltop has super stealthy exit holes, and all of the Saviors are inside the fence, why not escape to the outside when they come, and then come back in after they leave? There are woods that they can hide in for a short time.
  12. No joke. His, is a back story I would love to see. Along with Negan (ducks).
  13. It looks like my daughter's color belt weapons class called "Tiny Tigers" when she was a martial arts novice! Whats is this Castaway? Will anyone speak?
  14. I just finished binge watching seasons 1 & 2. Really loved both of them. In particular, Detective Lucien is my favorite. I hope for a season 3 with Lucien back and working another case. In respect to season 2-I think that Sophie and Alice had very similar noses, but their personalities were very different. You could see what the mom was talking when they were finallky reunited with the real Alice. She hugged and hugged hard. Very different than Sophie. Sophie's personality is what made her (ultimately) a willing victim. This story reminded me a lot of the real case in Cleveland were this guy (Castro) had three victims and used them as pawns against each. In particular, he favored one that had his child and hated one that he felt was "not as pretty". He hated the one girl so much that he caused her to miscarriage multiple times. Very horrific case.
  15. I think that Oprah is improving as an actress, but sometimes, when she lays on the southern-type accent, it really sounds like a put on. And I say this as someone who really enjoys and respects her. Her new movie looks awesome though (I forget the name-about the woman with cancer and she is the daughter). Her acting appears to be improving. She was stellar in The Color Purple, so it is obviously in there. I was not surprised by Lady Mae's reaction to her father. That whole "be sweet" is code. That is also used in cultish polygamy groups to their women (basically, be sweet-shut-up and do as I say and it won't be so bad for you). I actually teach infant development, but even I don't know this answer. If a woman loses one of a set of twins, wouldn't she automatically be on bed-rest for the duration to minimize any issue for the remaining twin? Generally, a woman goes into labor and both babies will be delivered. The body doesn't decide to have one and wait for the other. If not, they wait and delivery both at the same time when the surviving twin is mature enough (usually 37 weeks), although one will be stillborn. Depending on the age of development, they may even have a funeral for one of the twins. It is like they just brushed that fact under the rug. She was set to have twins, there is normally some grieving associated with the loss of a twin.
  16. Thanks. I will check it out! I cannot believe that I missed it! This is appointment TV for me (Queen Sugar as well).
  17. Yes. I mean, years from now. I feel like Axe will push them (Taylor) into things they do not want to do (like the gambling), and that will cause resentment and possible desire for revenge or to do the right thing.
  18. I was disappointed in Wendy's assessment of the female astronaut. I felt like she did not want a female to have the position. It felt personal (on Wendy's part) to me. (I say this as a psych professional). Usually there are standardized assessments that are used for these types of things, NOT just relying on a very subjective and biased unstructured interview. ETA: Yeah, not enough Taylor! Anyone get the feeling that, if anyone could ever bring Axe down, it will end up being Taylor?
  19. Man, I missed it and it is not OnDemand. I will have to set a season pass and catch a re-run.
  20. I was thinking about the show and I was wondering about WHO would I be most shocked was dead and by whom? So, I guess I would be the most shocked if Bonnie was dead by one of the twins. I figure that won't happen, so the teacher dead by Ed would also be way out there, but not likely because I figure that the dead person must be a main character and I would include the kids in that. So, the biggest mystery is who is dead? If I was a writer, what would be really interesting, plausible, yet tragic? Amabelle, killing Celeste's husband (what is his name) because she sees him hurting Celeste and perhaps Ziggy gives her the gun to "protect" herself from the "bully". Perhaps she gets reinforced by her mom that no one should put their hands on you and that you "fight" back. Of course, it could be taken too literally. So if this were true, it would be tragic because the kids that may have been bullying her, are now fatherless because of his own actions. Celeste will also feel responsible for not leaving and now the husband is dead (even though he deserves it). Just spit-balling, probably not even in the ballpark.
