  1. Not every school district uses the WISC or the WPPSI or the WAIS (intelligence tests-longstanding, normed and standardized), for inclusion into the G&T program. That would be too expensive. It seems many people do not understand the how or why these tests are administered. It has to be done 1-1 by a licensed psychologist (usually child or school specialist). It is expensive and time consuming with multiple subsets of assessment. The vast majority of kids in G&T programs are there because their scores on achievement tests (testing what you have learned or should have learned) which are routinely administered on a yearly basis by public schools that receive federal funds for education (private schools may do none of these things btw). It is a requirement that the children illustrate basic levels of knowledge for their age group so that the school continues to receive federal funds. The tests are more about proving teacher/school competence (hence the pressure for good scores by the teacher and to ensure those), than they are assessments of the children (as a primary reason for doing them). And they are NOT assessing intelligence although the lay-public always thinks so. However, many schools use THOSE scores as cutoffs (because they keep the records for year-to-year for each kid and compare them) for inclusion into G&T and possibly AP and Honors classes (for older kids). I remember my 5th grade daughter was mere points from being in the gifted program in math one year and I am glad that she didn't make the cut-off (they had changed it that very year-the prior year she would have been in). Sure it is flattering, but all they did was skip those kids a grade in math. It really wasn't all that special and then she had the stereotypical female adolescent math drop-off and started to struggle with it in high school. So, it was better that she did not advance. Being in a G&T program (based on achievement) and actually having an above average IQ are 2 different things, but people think that they are the same. They are not necessarily mutually exclusive. As another aside regarding the "gifted" label, back in the 70s my brother was in 1st grade and the teacher had problems with him. He wouldn't pay attention and do the work. He was put in the corner a lot (back when they did that) and punished. He was labeled a "problem" child. They thought that he was delayed. They brought in the psychologist and did intelligence testing on him to determine his deficits. Well, it turns out that he had a 140+ IQ in 1st grade and was now labeled a "genius". The teacher was told that he was "bored" and needed more. This was before official G&T programs. Well, they sure changed their tune and now his behavior was viewed totally differently. Instead of punishment when he wouldn't do something, it was now perceived as being bored and needing more engaging things to do. I mention this because the power of a "label" is a strong basis for perception and guides the way people act. The rich people in Monterey are acutely aware of perceptions. It is ALL about perception in the show. If Amabelle is "perceived" as gifted, she will be treated as such, therefore making her "gifted" and treated specially. She fulfills the prophecy and the perception. This show is all about the perceptions people have of others and how that drives the interactions.
  2. Really good point. The school would be on burn, if I were the parent. HOW and WHY is this happening on school property? WHERE are the teachers when these things are happening? There is no way that the lowly teacher would be handling this independently. The superintendent would be involved, as well as, the district child psychologist and/or the school counselor. They would all be trying to cover their assess because lawsuit is one step away with parents of means and the school would want to put a stop to it ASAP for the sake of their own reputation. I said it before, but the teacher having the abused child call out another kid in front of everyone would not happen. She has gone rogue and should be fired.
  3. Really? I didn't. lol. Guess that I am gullible. Really liking this show, but can't see this being more than 1 season. What can they do beyond one season?
  4. Ya know what occurred to me today? I live on the east coast (we had a blizzard today), just some hours above VA which is where TWD is set currently. Uh, how come they have never shown winter? They would get some amount of snow and cold there. Everything would come to a screeching halt regarding food in winter. Some of these people would die, or would have already died at this point due to starvation. That small garden for melons that Zeke was tending to at the end is NOT big enough to supply all the Kingdom and the Saviors. My grandmother had a garden that was 1/2 and acre for a family of 13 and most of her time was spent canning and freezing for the winter. There is a lot of unrealistic stuff on TWD, but their reliance on only showing summer is at a breaking point. They get freaking winter in VA and big snow storms too. For what its' worth, I would like to see some walkers in the snow. Maybe they are afraid that it would look like GoT or something? In addition, with no snow plows, there is NO WAY that Negan's crew would be able to collect from Alexandria and Hilltop, thereby leaving them alone for some potential amounts of time.
  5. Excellent discussion. This is akin to saying that a person who works in the mental health field always has their own shit together. I cannot even tell you how many psychiatrists and other allied professionals that I have worked with who were barely holding it together and were in just as bad shape as some of their patients. I know of people in the mental health field who counseled people on eating disorders and had the same (untreated problem). I know of professionals who were being abused at home too or were abusive. Having the knowledge and being proficient in a field does not mean that we have it altogether at home. We often compartmentalize and think, somehow that we are different from the people we help. While I do not think it is a majority, it still happens. Domestic violence can and does happen to anyone. I worked at a shelter during my internship in a very well off county. Some of these women would roll up to the food bank in a Mercedes because the abusive spouse would use finances as another way of control. He would give her $20 dollars a week to feed the whole family. And if she didn't feed them, look out. She would have all the nice surface things to her friends, but secretly have to go and get free food because of the abuser. It is not easy to get out of these situations, especially if you have no access to any money or a job. I think (at the time) that the number of attempts a woman makes before actually getting out is 8. Also, the most dangerous time for a woman who is being abused is when pregnant. That set off alarm bells for me.
  6. I used to work in the fitness industry back in the 80s-90s and most of the places I worked had glass so outside customers could see what was happening. It was a selling point. See all the fun you are missing! You can look like this too! We did have a "lurker" one time, but the manager got rid of him pretty quick. It wouldn't be hard to sit in the parking lot and watch though. Some of the larger clubs may have the fitness studios in the back or buried within the structure with no outside windows or windows to the street. Some places may put the classes on a higher floor and they also may have a large window. It is nice for the natural light. Dance studios may often have large windows that look out onto a street or whatever. I think it really depends on the facility, but it is not too uncommon. I worked at one place that had a "women" only vibe, so there was no way for people to look in. That was part of their selling point. Workout without anyone seeing!
  7. One of the things that sticks out for me, is that Morgan and therefore, Carol, does not really understand the horror of what Negan did. Just like Carol will not speak of what happened in the "grove". It is likely no one will want to give the gory details of what happened. Maybe Carl would talk about it, because he is younger and seemed more willing to fight back and have his arm lopped off for the benefit of others, (Rosita as well because of her extreme anger). Carol and Morgan don't really "know" what happened and how that has impacted everyone.
  8. Oh, Morgan did it to show them that they are all 100% with the Saviors. I hope it is a ploy.
  9. I get Richard's pain. Every single one of them has PTSD or acute stress D/O. No one is okay in the ZA.
  10. Morgan found the evidence. It was Richard. Of course, it was.
  11. Jerry looks like he is going to go all Hulk on them. Richard totally did this. He made sure to short the melon when they were looking around at the shopping cart block. He is trying to start the war.
  12. I love the new character. I hope we see more of her.
  13. I got tired of feeling left out when everyone would refer to seminal moments from BB, that I watched the entire series over the winter and now can understand what all the comments are about regarding Gus and others. Can't wait for BCS to start.
  14. I just started wondering when this would be back. Definitely looking forward to it.
  15. I had no idea about this season as I did not watch the end of the reunion last season. Must have been pissed about the winner or something! Sandra, Cirie-Goddess, Malcolm, Debbie. WOW. This is gonna be an awesome season. And as a throwback to one of my all time favorite players...
  16. Yeah, I agree with this. I cannot remember how long he has been her "dad", but perhaps he wants to say something, but doesn't want to overstep. There could be some regret or sadness there. It did not look like lust to me. Maybe he suspects that she is doing something behind Maddie's back, but doesn't want to confront or say anything?
  17. Oh yeah. I forgot about the pronouns! lol If you were going to say, ________ is attractive. Would you say They are attractive? (if you weren't going to use their actual name?)
  18. I actually really love this show. I will watch it over and over, even if I am not totally paying attention. I find Taylor to be a fascinating character. I hope working for Axe doesn't mess her up psychologically. I thought Axe sort of forced her to gamble, and that was a line in the sand for her. I also like Lara. I think all of the women on this show are great characters.
