  1. It could be about billing, because Constance comes before Jennifer in the advertising, so if the studio pushed JLo in Best Actress they would have to campaign Wu there, and just as much, lest the talent get offended. Not that it would cause vote splitting in this case, but it would be a bigger effort/expense to push two people vs one. Or, they think it's an easier path to a Supporting nomination; that's often why lead performances end up there (last year, it took a while for Olivia Colman's lead placement to be announced for The Favourite and when it was, prognosticators said she was costing herself a sure-fire win in BSA, which, LOL). In JLo's case, maybe it's felt that some voters aren't ready to go all in on "Jennifer Lopez, Oscar nominee" just yet, so Best Actress might be a bridge too far, but in the "lesser" category...
  2. The advertising/trailers and MPAA warnings should have made this obvious, but just in case...Joker movie too violent for kids, Alamo Drafthouse warns parents: It shouldn't surprise me what parents will drag their kids to see because they don't do a basic internet search on the content of a film or are too cheap for a babysitter. I had to bite my tongue hard the time that a coworker relayed how she took her kids (ten and under) to see Ted because it was a talking bear, so it had to be fine for children, right?
  3. Even the raves about Joker don't make it seem like something that general audiences will want to watch again and again in theaters, and they are clear the movie is not for everyone. It's still a hugely hyped movie, though, that has an initial rush factor. On the other hand, I think the controversies and the tone of it might attract people who don't usually see comic book adaptations. Movies that appeal to an older audience tend to have better legs and awards attention will also help extend its box office run.
  4. After seeing Hustlers, if JLo is "supporting" in it, what are Julia Stiles, Kiki Palmer, Lili Reinhart and Wai Ching Ho, cameos? Wu is onscreen a tiny bit more, I guess enough to justify Lopez being in a completely different category from her, and the awards industrial complex's insistence that movies can't have two leads of the same gender will continue. Applying the same sort of gymnastics to non-Oscar bait shows the ridiculousness of it all: "It's Hobbs & Shaw, not the reverse, so actually, I think Jason Statham's story arc supports The Rock's evolution as a lead character!" Usually, when one co-lead gets "demoted", it's to try to maximize the nomination chances for the film, but I don't see Wu getting any traction in Best Actress even with JLo safely in Supporting. Some years, Best Actress is the less competitive category between the two, even if it is more prestigious. Very rarely, voters will reject a studio's category placement for an actor, but I think the last time it happened at the Oscars was with Kate Winslet for The Reader. * Joker had a huge opening weekend. Joaquin seems the most likely nominee from it, with a nomination in Best Director being the iffiest prospect given the nature of that branch in recent years. Todd Phillips doing Director rountables is going to provide the awards blogs with a lot of content, if nothing else.
  5. Joker sets an October opening weekend record. Will it play more like a comic book movie or an R-rated drama? Will it become the biggest Todd Phillips movie of all? Stay tuned! 6. I follow a couple on Instagram who collectively lost 400 pounds: the woman lost over 300 pounds and had major loose skin issues but her husband, who went down about 95 pounds and is more about weightlifting than cardio, doesn't (he's posted shirtless pics). I know that in reality, Chris Sullivan was wearing padding, and now the makeup team doesn't want to give themselves even more work. Still, whether a person has loose skin after weight loss depends on many things, like how much weight was lost, age, individual skin elasticity, how long the person was obese before, the type of exercise, diet/water consumption, etc. * I remember a lot of balking at Chrissy's revelation about being contractually obligated to lose weight. Whatever thoughts viewers had about her size, the implications of TPTB having some sort of diet clause in a contract for this show, raised enough objections that it quickly stopped being brought up. Isn't the Kate character based on the headwriter's sister? If he's got a close family member with significant, long-term weight issues, he should have known that a diet clause was always an iffy propostion to actually work in the case of Chrissy/Kate. This was not like some actor getting ripped in 6 weeks to be in superhero shape. If the reason Kate's storylines have generally been the weakest of the Pearson siblings is because the wtiters had a "Kate drops 200+ pounds-how does she cope?" plot all mapped out for S1-S2 but not much else, then that is on TPTB. However, TPTB seem to want fans to like them. Kate's weight is addressed and she is shown with personal hangups about it, but it isn't presented as an impossible barrier that holds her back from having a full life: she doesn't get a singing gig because her voice isn't good enough, not her size; the fertility specialist has misgivings about treating her at first but relents, and Kate ends up having a baby. If Kate is dead before Rebecca, an obesity-related cause (from these writers) would surprise me. * Kevin is great with kids in "fun/sensitive uncle" way but going to all of Baby Jack's medical appointments seems a bit much. Toby is probably too overwhelmed to be resentful of Kevin like he normally is.

Didn't Miguel and Jack have a different backstory last year? I had the impression they knew each other longer than what was presented tonight. 15. Being in a hit movie is always better for an actor's career than having a flop, but traditionally, Tony isn't really one of the showcase roles. I too am kind of dubious about the box office appeal of a West Side Story remake in the 2020s. Fortunately for Ansel, he is of the demo that Hollywood gives the most leeway to "underperform" before relegating them to supporting roles and direct-to-VOD roles.
  16. As long as the real Princess Bride isn't yanked from circulation, eh, let them try. It will probably go about as well as the shot-for-shot remake of Psycho, and if it's better than that, it's still unlikely to become a classic. In the meantime, a remake will drive more viewers to the 1986 version of TBP. Many younger viewers are extremely averse to "older" movies and Hollywood avoiding remakes won't change that. I tend to look at movie remakes as a bridge/connection to the past rather than an erasure of it. The Look Who's Talking movies weren't considered particularly good to begin with, but maybe that's a case where a story is best left in the past. More originality from studio films would be nice but as long as audiences treat them like something they'll catch on streaming eventually, more projects will be based on established IP. Still, Hollywood has a long relationship with remakes: the silent version got redone with sound, a sanitized version of Pre-Code original, the black-and-white version remade in Technicolor, made-for-TV takes of classic films, etc.
  17. Jennifer Lopez and STX Entertainment have their best live-action opening weekends ever. NFL Thread

I saw something about the claims against Antonio Brown on Twitter over the weekend... Someone leaked a DM exchange with him where he was framing it as an extortion attempt. Of course, he would say that. Lots of things get claimed online about stars that are completely untrue, but it's funny to see the reports now that the NFL and the Pats had "no idea" about the allegations until yesterday. Here's the tweet I saw about it on Saturday: * In related news (or not), Gronk started a lot of speculation yesterday with this post: Is he unretiring? Stay tuned...

There are a couple of options: A) AB really wanted to be on the Pats all along, but the Steelers never would have agreed to trade him there. Once Brown was on a bad team, he had to take drastic action to get himself released and in a way where anyone *ahem* was free to sign him. He will surprisingly clean up his act. B) If Antonio Brown does things The Patriot Way, Brady has an great receiver to work with. If not, Chess Master Belichick can still pump AB for relatively recent insider info about the rival Steelers while he's there, and the team will still be good without him. If he burns through New England, too, he probably won't end up on a third team this season, so the Pats won't have to face off against him no matter what.
