  1. Although a lot of good things happened to me in my personal life this year, I have to say watching John Oliver explode a giant lit up 2016 and seeing so many people say fuck 2016 on his show last night gave me an immense sense of pleasure.

I also like the idea of writing a note saying "this is not normal". The people saying give him a chance are pissing me off, so I enjoyed John's attitude about all of this.

Wow. Thank you, candall, and everyone who liked my post.  I have to say that I don't expect a lot of calls given that I live in a safe, dark blue, area of CA, but I had to put it out there because there is still some fear here and I would do it even if I lived in one of the deep red states.

Here's something that scares me:  I saw that 53% of the white women in the country voted for Trump.  That means that  all of them who have or will someday have sons are possibly perpetuating the idea that "locker room talk" is ok and that "boys will be boys".  My God, are we still that far from fixing this behavior?

Yup, very far. I have heard so many women defend this using those exact phrases. They even applauded it because they are tired of "pc" culture.

This Cracked article made me feel somewhat better. Highly recommended.

It made me feel worse. Particularly #2. And #3. It is just rationalizing this.

god, particularly the part about trump states legalizing marijuana. Hey,  the KKK endorsed candidate won, but maybe at least those racists are ok with me getting high!

    OMG.

How ridiculous would a Ye Presidency be?

He'd wear Adidas track suits to state dinners.

The State of the Union would be a hot track he dropped, and would probably debut on the billboard top 100.

Kim Kardashian would be the First Freaking Lady.

Truly terrifying that it's a viable possibility.

Even more terrifying that a part of me desperately wants it to happen.

You know, part of me is like fuck it. You guys can have your four years of the Donald, we can have our four years of Yeezy. Let's just give in to the shit show. Then maybe we'll have to compromise on a sane rational candidate in 2024.

I think you're making a mistake to put it all on Trump and his deplorables.

There was clearly a desire to see real change, and Trump offered it. Good change or bad, it didn't seem to matter to some. I've seen people who were interviewed say that at least he offered something new.

Yes, a lot of people liked his messages of division and bigotry. A lot of people have apparently been waiting years to be allowed to say what they really think about people with darker skin than theirs, and they should be called out for what they are. But not all of them. Some of the people who voted for Trump would have been reachable with a candidate who wasn't so easily painted as an establishment stooge. A lot of the people who voted for Johnson too.

As I've said in other threads, the Democrats need to learn from this and reshape themselves around their true progressive figures. Sanders, Warren and others need to inspire the same momentum for change that Trump has, but in a positive manner, instead of being regressive and divisive.

I'm sorry, but I can't agree. This campaign was very positive in the end. They want change in the sense that they are afraid of positive change. They want the good ole days back. I like Warren and Sanders more than HRC, but this would have happened with them too at this point of time. This is a backlash to change.

  6. Fuck, I feel awful about saying before that Gary Johnson would take Trump voters, not Hillary. I do wonder how many bitter Bernie bros sat out.

Something came out of my mouth tonight that I never thought I would say "I don't care about an unborn child" I said it in response to someone who said "at least unborn babies won't be murdered anymore" I said that I didn't care about a baby being aborted, what I cared about was that my 401k will be gone before I can even use it, that my parents' social security that they worked so hard for will vanish, that minorities will no longer feel safe in their own country, and she didn't get it, she truly didn't understand it, all she could say was "Well Hilary is so dishonest and we just need to stop abortion".

As a vehemently pro choice woman, I am now terrified of the idea of back alley abortions becoming a huge thing.  I am terrified for immigrants and  minorities in this country being victims of hate and violence since fear against them has been validated by this election. I am terrified of LGBT friends losing their rights. I am terrified for my near retirement parents. I am terrified for my husband in the military now that this ass clown will our commander in chief.

    fuck.

I couldn't not watch the results as they come in tomorrow night. Will be watching with my hubby. I'm really hoping for Florida to go blue, so I can relax a little bit, on the earlier side. I'm basically glued to MSNBC for the next 30 hours while I'm awake, and not voting. Or getting some thank-you-for-voting gifts that some businesses near me are giving out.

Once Florida (hopefully) gets called for Clinton, I will be good. I will get on Facebook and drink some Trumpster tears.

About champagne - in addition to the wonderful suggestions already put out, I'm a big fan of Gruet (from New Mexico!), Mumm and Gloria Ferrer.  I believe they all sell bottles in the $20 range.

I love Mumm! Hoping to visit the winery this weekend.

For reasons too complicated to get into, I will be with my husband's Repub friends tomorrow night. My original plan of drinking and watching the results will not happening since I have less of a chance of holding my tongue. So I am trying to plan a game night to pass time in the evening or go see a movie or something. I am kind of bummed, I was looking forward to the live chat.

  10. I think Patrick is an ASS for questioning Alla, but I get why he is so invested. He has seen his best friend go through three divorces, and has presumably had to be his rock during those times. I would be questioning and side eyeing my best friend in the same situation, and they would do the same for me. Like it or not, but Matt clearly wants love. I doubt someone would get married three times and engaged a fourth without being a romantic. He strikes me as a love addict. Issues of worries for Alla and her son aside, this will not end well most likely, beause of Matt, not Alla, and I can't blame a best friend for being upset. He is going about it the wrong way but I get his frustration.

  11. Word to everything that sleakandchic said.

And the scary part to me is that despite the lying and him being dangerous seeming so obvious to so many, if he wins, it means that there is a substantial part of the country that doesn't see this or is not willing to see this. It scares me enough that he was able to win the primary. But the election? The fact that it is this close and so many are throwing their support behind him makes me question people who I used to think wanted the best for this country just like I do, in my mind they just had a different path of how to get the country in a better place. If he wins, the political climate really about feelings and fear, not hope and facts.

Thank you for responding.  My question may backfire on me if I hear new reasons to freak out about!  The minority and immigrant issue is a huge concern, along with foreign policy.   And there are others, of  course.

    Oh, I could keep going.

What? This doesn't even make sense to me (right now). Why should Matt's mother have to go to the club with Matt's friends and Alla? The "conundrum" (co·nun·drum: "a confusing and difficult problem or question" or "a question asked for amusement, typically one with a pun in its answer; a riddle"; this is neither) is solved by Matt trusting his future wife and stop being so petty and jealous, and by other people suspending judgment over something so trivial and unimportant. Saying that Matt's mother should go to the club is just asinine, unless his mother enjoys that atmosphere, enjoys dancing, and enjoys the music that will be played. If she's going to enjoy herself, she should be welcome to go. If she isn't going to, then there's no reason she needs to go chaperone. Alla's an adult and should be treated as such. Either she's going to step out on Matt, in which case he can just call off the wedding, or she isn't; and if doesn't step out on him, then she demonstrates that his trust was not misplaced. Either way, she's deserving of trust until she proves she cannot be trusted. And people on this forum need to stop being such childish prudes.

Plus, Alla deserves to have an outlet/friend that isn't Matt's smothering mother.

I'm seeing more Gary Johnson can win if everyone votes for him memes.

I'm  not concerned about him winning,  but my concern over the Nader effect is growing.

Weirdly, I am not concerned about the Nader effect. I do see a lot of Johnson support, but it is from people who would be voting republican to begin with. I was for Bernie originally, as were a lot of my left leaning friends, and we all understand that Johnson runs on a campaign that is pretty much the opposite of what we believe in. I can respect Libertarians as individuals far more than Trump republicans, but there is nothing in that campaign that speaks to me. Johnson will be taking away mostly Trump votes.
