  1. Orange's submission in the Comedy category here and at the Emmys is strategic. Netflix submitted the show as a Drama to the SAG awards and Golden Globes; it was shut out at the former and only received one nomination at the latter. Had it been campaigned as a comedy, I think it would have done much better. Nurse Jackie and United States of Tara are other dramatic shows that benefited from submitting as comedies.

As for Uzo Aduba, these awards reflect the first season, for which she received guest billing. Then again, I believe Laverne Cox was also credited as a guest, and yet she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress. Huh.

I agree; much less competition in Comedy, especially considering the Breaking Bad/True Detective juggernaut. I think this particular awards show considered Season 2 though, since Fargo won for best miniseries.

  2. I have no episode blurb, but I am wondering how others felt about Macy being possessed.  At first glance I thought it was both old hat and over the top, but by the end I decided the ends justified the means: a) Irving realizing his wife and daughter aren't fragile, and b) it gives Jenny someone to relate to.

ETA: Of course, I realize and embrace the fact that so much of SH is over the top.  Demonic possession of children is one of my big Noooope!s though.

  3. I really like this show, mostly because the adult characters all feel like adults, even though they sometimes act like children.  also, I love Bert.  I was also disappointed in the Bert storyline, but Diane+Kate interaction more than made up for it.  Too bad TW is probably #bearchow.

  4. I don't necessarily think that it's a bad career move. I'm guessing she won't be in the sequel though, her IMDB list says she's playing "young Cathy" which makes me think that there's maybe even two actresses playing the role in Flowers in the Attic though none is listed... Petals on the Wind takes place like 10 years later (though I guess there may be flashbacks) and it's INSANE. I still can't get over the fact that I was reading these when I was like 10. Really inappropriate! This is going to be better/worse than Sharknado in terms of cheese and craziness.

I was 10-ish too. So inappropriate but also so educational! it's where I learned that purple and orange clash and that you should never eat the donuts.

I am also so excited to hear what Tara thinks., but I'd love to listen as Dave watches it. I'm willing to bet he's never read the books.

  5. A few in no real order:

    • Extra Hot Great : which due to my mumbling of what I was listening to, my wife refers to as "Wet Hot Gravy"
    • Dan Carlin's Hardcore History : these take me days to listen to and I feel all smart afterwards
    • Stuff Mom Never Told You : being a guy, mom told me none of this, but my friend is a host, so I enjoy it
    • Comic Vine Podcast : a very meandering journey through the current week's comics
    • Tech News Today : keeps me up to date on tech news so I can sound like I know what I am talking about at work

I did a massive clear out of my Downcast app when my phone ran out of room, so there used to be a lot more.

    Wet Hot Gravy! love that.

And thanks for the Tech News Today link.  I should listen to that for the same reason.

  6. My must listen podcasts (in listening order, which I only do at the gym or on the weekend or other chore-centered moments)

    1. Pop Culture Happy Hour (NPR)

    2. Extra Hot Great (the whole shebang.  I make myself wait until the weekend to listen to the minis as well as Tuesday's podcast. I am totally a crackpot!)

    *3. The Moth

    4. Stuff You Missed in History Class

    5. Radiolab (selected episodes)

    *6. Studio 360  (selected episodes)

    7. Fresh Air (selected episodes)

    8. BackStory

    9. This American Life

    10. Girl on Guy with Aisha Tyler

*These zoom right to #3 when a new podcast is available, which sadly is far too infrequently: The Tobolowsky Files, The Memory Palace, Talking With My Mouth Full, Lexicon Valley (Slate), Americon Icons episodes from Studio 360

Real talk: I never get completely caught up.  But from these lists, I’ve added Doug Loves Movies and Welcome to Night Vale.  I have other podcasts on my device, and I’d love to listen to them as well, but my listening time is limited.  Sometimes I delve into these when I have extra time: By the Way with Jeff Garlin, Ask Me Another.

I'm really enjoying Doug Loves Movies and Night Vale. Hoping to get suggestions for additions!

  7. I rail against the HFPA annually, but I think their main goal is to throw a really fun party--sparkly guests and lots of booze.  I think they also like to be on the leading edge, so if no one else has nominated Tatiana Maslany, by golly, they will! I firmly believe this is a Good Thing.  Re: Brooklyn Nine Nine (which I constantly call Brooklyn 911), what a great spotlight nomination.  (Wrong actor was nominated though.) Orange is the New Black was robbed, and again, Taylor Schilling is fine, but she's not the actor I'd have singled out.  In the end, I'm all for a raucous, sparkly party even if Modern Family wins again.
