  1. IMO, the best part of the episode was the montage showing the growing number of arrests under Skynet, er, The System. Otherwise? Not a very impressive finale. It tried to cover way too much ground in very little time and, yes, it was too easy to finish off The System. It was as though it was over before it began. A limp finale to an otherwise strong show ... especially as Hour just sort of slipped through the cracks at the end, which didn't serve the character well.
  2. When in doubt, check out Sepideh Moafi's hair. Bun = past, long & flowing = present-ish, glamorously gray = future. Works for me. 🙂 I don't know whether it's the streaming factor or a reflection on Class of '09 itself that it's such a dud on this forum. Not having a live show seems to dissipate the audience but not this badly ... Too bad the Poet/Hour shippers are going to have to content themselves with that Ep 6 liplock. The show runners appear determined to ship Poet/Lennix, although those two have the combustion of wet matches. (Yes, I'm that shallow.) "Fuck it, let's get married" is not a line with which to sweep a lady off her feet. Try it sometime with your girlfriend and see how quickly she smacks you. More importantly, I don't see how TPTBB are going to get out of the corner they've painted themselves into with The System and its omniscience. Once you've created an invincible nemesis, how do you pull victory out of your ass, especially with one episode left to go? To end such a dark series with defeat for our heroes would be too much, however, unless they want to create the downer to end all downers.
  3. In Janet's case, I wish they'd listened to Peter DeLuise and the faction that wanted her just to lose an arm or a leg but still survive. She'd still be heroic, just not gone. Or as the special effects guy said while he was setting up her "kill shot," "Geez, who did you piss off?" It wouldn't have made S8 seem quite so depopulated, what with no St. George and no Little Doc. And Dr. Fraiser could have been transitioned (no, not that way!) to Atlantis or the new-look SGC in S9. I have nothing against Lexa Doig, who seems a very nice person, but she came nowhere close to filling Teryl Rothery's pumps. This just in: Weasel Boy has given a characteristically self-serving apologia pro showrunner sua with regard to Heroes, full of pats on his own back: https://www.thecompanion.app/stargate-heroes-oral-history/
  4. There's a lot of life in the old Stargate franchise yet. There's a game graphic that got posted today at The Companion. You will notice that the most predominant figure is—wait for it—Carter! This is incredibly gratifying for those of us who stuck up for Amanda Tapping way back on TWOP and when Weasel Boy tried to write her out of S10. The Grand High Empress of Sci-Fi rules with benevolence ... but boy does she rule.
  5. A melancholy look at What Might Have Been if Amazon hadn't taken the franchise out of Brad Wright's hands: https://www.thecompanion.app/2022/12/09/put-your-questions-to-stargate-sg-1-co-creator-brad-wright-companion-update/ BW mentions that Robert C. Cooper made different choices when he took over as SG-1 show runner. He sure did--all of them bad. If and (hopefully) when Christopher Judge reprises Teal'c you'll have to attach a subwoofer to your TV set:
  6. Since Gatecon is on the horizon (and can be streamed this year), I thought I'd share these interviews with a couple of the main guests. Thank you for indulging me. https://www.thecompanion.app/2022/06/22/stargate-colin-cunningham-the-actor-who-fell-to-earth/ https://www.thecompanion.app/2022/07/21/stargate-janet-an-interview-with-teryl-rothery/
  7. I've had the great good fortune to be picked by The Companion to be part of its stable of Stargate SG-1 scribes. Here are one or two bylines of which I'm particularly proud: https://www.thecompanion.app/2022/07/05/stargate-sg-1s-children-of-the-gods-the-original-vs-the-final-edit/ https://www.thecompanion.app/2022/06/16/stargate-rite-of-passage/
  8. My Facebook photo for Pride Month. Very naughty of me.
  9. My wife—who loves Star Trek: Picard—saw the teaser for SNW and said, "The only thing strange was the captain's haircut." Ouch.
  10. You're most cool, Blueray. The Atlantis board has died for lack of interest, it would appear so come on over to the shallow end of the pool, the water's fine. :-) As for Atlanteans on an SG-1 reboot, Beckett would be an obvious (and popular) choice for CMO. I always liked McKay better on SG-1 episodes because of the obvious clash with Carter (which brings out Sam's ego big-time). Kavan Smith is a resident heartthrob on the Hallmark Channel now, so I think we can rule out the beloved Lorne. No disrespect to Bill Dow/Dr. Lee but Radek Zelenka would (again) be a popular nod for the resident all-purpose-scientist vacancy. Woolsey works best in small doses for me. Back to the IOA! Unless Shepherd becomes the new Jack/Mitchell, I don't see any other SG:A characters having a place in the new scheme, presuming it hews to the SG-1 teamy-goodness formula. And marina to, wor'd. So much wor'd.
  11. Saw it. Read it. Didn't buy the premise, marina to. Janet's death "stings more than ever" because TPTB fracked it up. Maybe someday The Companion will let me write an explanation of why Heroes is a failure, largely because of its lack of catharsis ... something that Ripple Effect tacitly acknowledged with its goodbyes in the final scene. Whenever someone like Amanda Tapping or Michael Shanks cites Heroes as their favorite episode it makes me fume. They just don't get it. As for Brad Wright's continuation of the saga, this seems to be as much as anybody (except Wright) knows. Anyone care to bet which legacy characters would find a place in the new iteration (Atlanteans are eligible—Lorne and Beckett fans raise your hands—but apparently Stargate: Universe is best forgotten, as it should be)? https://www.gateworld.net/news/2022/03/heres-proof-brad-wright-new-stargate-script-exists-teaser/
  12. The Companion has put all the Stargate regulars and recurring characters through the Briggs-Meyers personality test and the results may interest you. It's Classic Stargate (S1-8), not Stargate Lite (S9-10) so no Mitchell, Vala, Landry or RoboDoc. https://www.thecompanion.app/2022/04/21/stargate-personality/ Best line: "Janet, you were too good for this universe and we never deserved you. Rest in peace." Also, as we used to say on TWOP: "Stargate: It's All About the Hair." https://www.thecompanion.app/2022/03/15/stargate-9/
  13. Wright's more than hinted. And he let Joe Mallozzi post the title page on Twitter. But until Wright channels St. George and says, "SG-1 you have a go," I won't believe there's a new series on the way. On a tangentially related note, I was transferring a 1990 Houston Grand Opera Madama Butterfly broadcast from tape to CD when, at the tail end, I ran across a Mercedes-Benz radio ad featuring a suspiciously sultry and familiar female voice. It took me a while to place it as ... our beloved Teryl Rothery. How nice to have a bit of the Little Doc fall into your day totally unexpectedly. Edited to add some serious Teryliciousness:
  14. Considering how much antipathy was directed toward Carter back in the good old days when the show was 'live,' I'm pleased by her enduring--even increasing--popularity. There's a Stargate convention coming up in Chicago this summer, and the top autograph and photo-op prices are commanded by Amanda Tapping. And if you ever get a chance to meet her, don't miss it. She's one of the kindest people God ever created. P.S.: The Amazon/M-G-M merger closed, improving the chances for new Stargate.
  15. Way to commit ratings suicide, show! Even though Julian M. was leaving anyway, the manner of his exit--and the choice of his replacement--don't bode well for the future of the only FBI that I've found consistently watchable. (International is more like FBI: Kindergarten.) The frequent casting turnover is strange, as though TPTB were trying to find the right demographic mix on the team, and Roxy Sternberg's maternity leave may make it even stranger. Mrs. Idiotboy was gutted by Jess' demise and doesn't want to watch FBI: MW anymore ... nor do I blame her. ("He's a rock star!" she once exclaimed after Jess goaded a hostage holding cult leader into a quick-draw.) And if Hana ever buys it, I'm going with her, even if Alexa Davalos is my new TV girlfriend.
  16. Ah yes, Ethon. One of my un-favorite episodes (save for Daniel's "I won't stop 'til I'm dead. And maybe not even then."). THREE colonels bicker about zapping the latest Death Star while it fires up to blow the Prometheus to smithereens, squandering their tactical advantage. The Prometheus was always what sailors would call a 'Jonah.' Guess she had it coming.
  17. The same AU in which Sam & Janet are the couple they should be. As for the 'demotion' of Sam in S9, this was much chewed over on TWOP and we came to the conclusion that certain regalia on Mitchell's uniform showed him to be senior in his rank. Also, he had 'positional authority' by dint of Sam's having gone off to Area 51. Or so I recall.
  18. The "anarchic" RDA interview has been posted: https://www.thecompanion.app/2022/02/25/video-richard-dean-anderson-qa/
  19. You bet, marina to! Now I am crushed to learn that Amanda and Teryl will be appearing in Chicago while I'm up in Michigan seeing my wife's new grandson. Life is so unfair!
  20. I just got finished with the live feed. It was freewheeling and fun. Technical difficulties made RDA a half-hour late but surprise guest Amanda Tapping pinch-hit brilliantly, and 'Big Boy' (as Dan Shea refers to him) was very candid and casual once he was able to join. It will be posted for free on YouTube, at a time unspecified ... perhaps after some editing is done. Brad Wright is sounding very pessimistic about the SG-1 reboot—not a good sign.
  21. Boy are you on the money (pardon the pun). Talk about 'playing out the string'! Not only are the scripts—including the infamous P.U.—lacking but the budget looks severely depleted. S8 basically vamps for time until Moebius looms over the horizon. The good writing was happening on Atlantis and probably the only reason S8 got made was that RDA didn't want to leave all the cast and crew in the lurch by retiring. Only when S9 was a firm possibility did SciFi back down from its long held position of 'no Jack, no show.'
  22. Although I haven't been able to get a good Colin Cunningham photo yet, marina to, he's arrived at FanX with his monodrama Centigrade, for which Martin Wood provided technical advice. Cunningham is inspiring, upbeat and charming ... yet another instance of an SG-1 audience favorite turning out to be even nicer in person than you dared hope (Judge, Tapping, Rothery, Wood, etc.). Incidentally, Centigrade was caught up in the same MGM bankruptcy that put Brad Wright's continuation of SG-1 onto a distant back burner.
  23. P.S.: I just met Mary McDonnell and FanX and she's real mensch. We agreed that BSG 2.0 is even more contemporary than when it was made. And she still looks gorgeous. McDonnell and EJO drew a crowd of a couple of thousand people or so to hear them discuss the serious. The two are still very playful and affectionate with each other, which is sweet.
  24. I saw Original Flavor BSG when I was teenager and it almost put me off science fiction for life. Unlike Buck Rogers (which had very similar production values), which aimed to be camp, BSG was blissfully oblivious to its own silliness, making it camp before the fact. Also, the storyline had almost nowhere to go. How many shows can you do of fluffy-haired heroes shooting it out with clumsy guys in chrome outfits, "By your command" and all that other jazz? BSG:1 was cheese and rancid cheese at that.
  25. Did Thomasina Gibson write an Illustrated Companion for S5/S6? I've got her books for S1/S2 and S7/8 and S9, and would like to close the circle, if possible. I've ransacked Amazon and eBay in vain. ETA: She did. AbeBooks.com is one's best resource for such tomes. Gibson wrote companions right through S10 ... although I won't be adding the latter as S10 is the season I would prefer to forget. FanX Day One: So sign of Colin Cunningham yet, marina to but Sam Jones/Aris Boch was there and didn't draw flies. Karma.
