  1. Wouldn't you find the plot a little hard to swallow? Amnesia really? "See, audience, we know you think this is hackneyed crap but, if we say it first, then we're being cheeky and meta and self-deprecating and a dozen other synonyms for full of shit." As if winking at the audience makes it better writing. As others have said, it was a better episode than last week. I know, I know. Damning with faint praise. But the show is on steadier ground when it moves away from the big bads and overarching mythologies. The COTW episodes are the show's bread and butter -- construct a half-decent crime with a half-decent resolution and the show's, well, not golden exactly. Copper, perhaps? ; )
  2. What a fascinating artistic experiment to film the rough draft and the dress rehearsal. I'll be really excited to see the final product. Anyone know when the season premiere is? <whispers> I'm being told this is the season premiere. Huh. Well. So... On the positive side, the actors all knew their lines and the camera was in focus. And to borrow something from the old OLTL forum over on TWOP: Why is Tory?
  3. Coming back to Dougal propositioning Claire: Since they have met, Claire bashed Dougal over the head with a stool after he threatened to rape her. Followed by the incident at the spring, where she shuddered in revulsion when she thought she would have to marry Dougal. What did he think all of that was, part of the Sassenach mating ritual? Of course, having been acquainted with Black Jack Randall, perhaps he does?
  4. You can't say Dougal isn't one to seize opportunity where he finds it. Just after he tells Claire that the issue with Black Jack is settled (because of the marriage he arranged), Dougal propositions her. You know, because she must be feeling both extra grateful for his help and perhaps unsatisfied by her wedding night with an inexperienced husband. So he's trying to get in on the ground floor so to speak. I think the latter is why he slaps Rupert. Because it was rather clear to him that she was more than pleased with how the night was going and Dougal's "assistance" in the future would not be required. Overall, I thought this episode was really well done and their way of getting Jamie's perspective into the episode by have him relay information to Claire was rather clever. One missed opportunity, though, was the part where Jamie was telling Claire about his family. We only heard fragments of the conversation. Jamie is still a bit of a cypher so the audience hearing more of what Claire was hearing could have opened his character up to us a little more.
  5. I found the moment when Black Jack draws Claire quite interesting. In the pilot, Frank tells Claire that he missed her so much that he was sketching her hand on classified documents. He wanted to honor her, hold onto her when she wasn't there. Here, Black Jack draws her image but does it to demean her, calling it "Beautiful Lies." So, like with the razor, we once again see the similarities between Frank and Black Jack but are continually reminded that Frank is a good man with a decidedly twisted ancestor.
  6. What I read from the scene was that Laoghaire knows that Jamie is not really emotionally engaged when they are fooling around -- that it's fun and release for him. But, clearly, it's more for her. However, what Laoghaire asked of Claire was a way "to move [Jamie's] heart forward" or for Jamie to feel for Laoghaire what she feels for him.
