  1. I definitely agree with all the criticisms, but there are two things I really liked. -Roxy was cast perfectly. -The boyfriend being intersex was an improvement on the explanation in the book. Having said all that, it’s obvious how the next two seasons will go (if they even happen): -Next season ends with Roxy losing her skein. -Season three will be the big war, with occasional flash forwards to 5000 year in the future.
  2. Betty Gilpin looks like what I expected a live action Warrior Nun (from the comics) should look like. I’m in.
  3. I started out knowing this episode was new, and then he had the dude explain to him what NFTs are and my brain did a double take. Thanks, Bill Maher for being eternally out of touch. I’ll check back with you in a year to hear your hot take on Chat GPT. ETA: Bill followed up his screed against young people by not knowing how to pronounce “Mifepristone.” The McLaughlin group was more relevant in John’s final years than this show.
  4. Oh, they’re definitely bringing all the shows together for the upcoming Thrawn movie(s?). But what I really loved is that Lucasfilm finally got the memo that we’re tired of Small Wars. This episode was epic. I also appreciated the Mala Mala homage with Grogu’s new droid body.
  5. It’s not just the issues the Saudis may have, it’s probably dudes at Amazon scared of the material and demanding it be toned down. Yes, the book is frightening, and that’s what makes it worthwhile to adapt properly. Budgetary constraints are understandable, but compromising the material could turn this into another V For Vendetta.
  6. I just watched episode 4, and am a little disappointed that they didn’t go as dark as the book did. I also wish they had the budget for the entire mob of Saudi women to Palpatine out.
  7. As a a fan of the old Dark Horse comics, I loved seeing the peak of Mount Umate. Come to think of it, I loved the entirety of the Coruscant portion because it reminded me of Andor.
  8. OK, I really liked the movie. What I can’t get over is that James Cameron put an homage to the 1972 movie Deep Throat in it. For those familiar with that adult classic, I urge you to think about what the premise of that film was, and then revisit one particular scene with the whale in Avatar.
  9. I’ve been a DC apologist for years, but I can’t spin this. Black Adam was awful, and I’m glad they’re scrapping the whole thing and starting over.
  10. I was rooting for this show, but it ended in a mess. I like the characters, it has potential, and I hope season 2 gets its act together. If there is no season 2, I hope Noah Centineo gets signed to play Superman. He’d be perfect.
  11. I watched this knowing nothing about it, but got really intrigued when it became obvious it was loosely based on the Business Plot. What puzzles me is that the real story was fantastic enough without having to create a whole new one.
  12. Did everyone take private jets to Greece? I know Greece has lax gun laws for an EU member state (or is it lax enforcement of existing gun laws), but it’s still weird to think that some unhinged American was simply waved through with his firearms by customs.
  13. I never would have expected this show to give us a deep cut riff on grail lore (Parzival specifically), but I’m impressed that they did.
  14. This was the best RRHOF Induction Ceremony in quite a while. My favorite performance? Lionel Richie. That man was coked out of his mind, combining his mastery of his craft with some big Randy Watson stage presence. I love Pat Benatar, Dolly, Duran Duran, Carly Simon and Judas Priest, but Lionel fucking stole that show.
  15. Well, last week I predicted next season would be an Odd Couple rip off, but now I’m changing my prediction to Kate & Allie…but with more frienemy action.
  16. And we all know what’s better than First Corinthians, don’t we? Two Corinthians. gotta have two.
  17. The more I think about this episode, the more questions I have. I’m willing to handwave the US military having the dough to stage operations because Alaska has hella oil. What I’m not willing to accept: -Gilead doesn’t need an Air Force Academy? In our world it’s already the one most infected with Christian radicals, why they would give it to a school for wives is weird. -How do you have any sort of advanced schooling without reading? As a viewer, I’d like to see this. -We’ve seen that Chicago is a war zone, California is supposedly on the brink of being back in US hands (or at least Gilead is not in control), and Gilead is fighting on all these fronts…how? I’m not even touching on Gilead’s war on their population. How is Gilead not overextended? We still know nothing about their economy despite its architect being a main character for four seasons. -The USAFA is about 800 miles from the Canadian border. An incursion like that would be problematic even with a military at full strength. What was their real goal? I have so many more problems, but I’ll leave it at that for now. I want to love this show, but they keep dropping the ball, and tease plot development while never delivering.
  18. There’s a part of me that suspects June was stupid enough to have Lawrence’s phone on her at all times so Gilead could get all the intel they needed. As for everything else: THT is getting on my last nerve. I already live in a world where the crazy religious freaks keep winning. Give us some fucking hope, show!
  19. What are the chances that New Bethlehem is Long Island, Nantucket, or (*ahem*) Martha’s Vineyard?
  20. And I doubt car insurance covers damage incurred in a “No man’s land.” You know: acts of war, and such.
  21. My anger at June was tempered ONLY by her ability to keep her mouth shut about the possible US move against Gilead. As for my frustrations with June: did the producers not realize how this storyline would hit differently for people after watching the Russo-Ukraine war for the past 8 months? The free world is hanging by a thread, planning a comeback, and June just wants to fuck it up for everyone because Hannah is dangled in front of her?
  22. I knew about the troubled history of US/Iranian relations, but there was a WHOLE lot I didn’t know about the crisis before watching this. If you’re interested in the Iranian hostage crisis, this is definitely required viewing.
  23. As a DC resident, I’m not looking forward to the new waves of right wing gangbanger violence the new GOP majority will usher in around here.
  24. Every now and then it’s important to mention that torture porn is not a substitute for plot.
  25. I’m enjoying this reimagining of the Vampire Chronicles, and I REALLY like that the show is telegraphing its intentions to continue the story after IWTV. Granted, I’m only a casual fan (I read the books because my friends urged me to almost 30 years ago), but the changes worked for me.
