If the Duggars really wanted to avoid anything created by pagans, they would stop celebrating birthdays since birthday celebrations are based on ancient pagan ritual. I've heard of Christians and Jehovah's Witnesses who won't celebrate birthdays for this reason.

There are two potential reasons for why the Duggars don't have a Christmas tree. Some conservative Christians want there to be a focus on Jesus during Christmas, which means no Santa Claus or Christmas trees, neither of which have anything to do with Jesus. The other reason may be that witches came up with the idea of decorating trees. Witches are often associated with the devil, so the Duggars try to stay away from anything that has to do with witches. It would be very hypocritical of them to not celebrate Halloween because it was created by witches but have a Christmas tree, which was created by witches.

@cereality , Jim Bob and Michelle don't want to take the chance that their kids will stray. They can't know for sure their kids won't stray if given the chance. By isolating them, JB&M are making sure that their kids can't stray.

The Duggars don't believe in pretty modest clothes because pretty clothes draw attention to your body. Michelle has said that clothing should just be something that covers your body and nothing else.

I think Jim Bob and Michelle are more worried about their daughters going out by themselves than their sons. If one of their daughters had pre-martial sex, they could get pregnant. The boys obviously can't get pregnant. The virginity of a daughter is considered more precious than the virginity of a son and it has been that way throughout history.

None of the kids are allowed to go anywhere by themselves. Even if it's going to the grocery store or a bookstore, they always need a chaperone with them.
