I think Lorraine's backstory would make for a great S6. Is she sympathetic to Dot because she was abused? How did she get so powerful and ruthless?  What was Danish to her?

I doubt they would make a show about Lorraine at this point, but I agree she would be an interesting central character.  And I'm for anything that gets us more Jennifer Jason Leigh performances.

Wow, I guess anyone can win an Emmy..even if they're the weakest link in the cast.

    I guess you're not a fan of Qunta's acting.

I think she is quite good in this role - a role she created.  She always reminds me of Amy Poehler in Parks and Recreation.  Poehler was nominated many times for that role, but never won.

I think it takes some skill to play a perpetually optimistic, idealistic person who ends up being the straight woman for the more comical characters.

  3. When Nicky's father got a lot of interest on the dating site, he said "Apparently I'm a zag."

I'm sure I spelled that wrong.  Can someone tell me what he said?  Apparently the kind of older man that women like.

  4. A running plot through this series has been the possiblity of a charter school company taking over Abbott Elementary and the skepticism/opposition of the main characters to the school going Charter.

I noticed on her Wikipedia page that Quinta Brunson attended the "Charter High School for Architecture & Design" in Philadelphia; this school seems to have shut down a few years ago.

After the most recent episode "Festival", a charter school executive tweeted that Brunson was hypocritical and was not in a position to be criticizing charter schools.  The exec said all of Brunson's schools were charter, but in fact her elementary school went charter only after Brunson left.  My very limited experience here (subbing in public high schools) is that charter schools are publicity conscious and always seem to be selling themselves.

  5. Bringing back Tariq (who was quite funny) was a good use of a discarded character.  Maybe he can come back once or twice a season.

Like Jacob, I had to look up Jazmin Sullivan.  She's a singer (won a couple Grammies) and grew up in Philadelphia.  This show consistently honors its Philly roots and inspiration.

  6. Janine was looking mighty cute in that blue outfit and white boots.  I would have tried to kiss her, too, Gregory!

It was good to see the gang in a different context.  What happens in Allentown, stays in Allentown, I guess.  Jakob's game night was particularly good.

  7. Another well-written episode.  A B-plot and a C-plot in addition to the main story; no wasted minutes; characters true to themselves.  Gregory's father instantly a good character.  No wonder this show wins awards.

They really have been setting us up to see Janine's sister.  It will be interesting to see what kind of personality they give her.

  8. I think Parks and Recreation is a closer analogue than The Office.   People working in local government.  Janine as the idealistic Leslie Knope; Ava as her boss Ron Swanson, who was cynical about the whole enterprise.  Other teachers and the janitor as the quirky characters you encounter,  One difference is P&R didn't bring in a love interest for Leslie until the third (?) season.

I agree they could probably use one additional character; a school nurse is a good suggestion.

And I doubt many viewers in the real world are rooting against Gregory and Janine.  Just a few internet people who think too much about TV shows.

For Amy's bet - how she arrived at the exact amount I don't know. But I think she was trying to prevent Andrew winning no matter what, even though it cost her the game (but she still has another chance to try again to win). Andrew had $6800, doubled is $13600. Amy had $15800. So, in order to ensure Andrew didn't win, she had to bet less than 15800-13600=$2200. Letting Andrew win would be worse than letting Sam win, because if Andrew won the game he would win the tournament.

Yes, I suspect that's what she was doing.  If Sam wins she gets to come back on Monday.  If Andrew wins, the tournament is over.

  10. I'm glad Sam won, if only so we can get at least one more game.

Amy appeared to overthink her FJ wager.  I suspect that a downside of being smart enough to be in the TOC is that you can get too much into your head and complicate things.  A less clever player (e.g. me and most contestants) would have bet enough to cover twice Sam's score and left it at that.

I was surprised Andrew couldn't come up with Trump L'oeil for his Daily Double.  I thought it was an instaget.

(Somewhere Alex Trebek is smiling because an answer was Trump L'oeil which is about as French as you can get, although he may be wishing Ken had pronounced it with more flair.)

  11. I'm liking how difficult the clues are.  That's the best thing about the TOC.  It's like heightened Jeopardy - better than usual contestants and tougher than usual clues.

The category Triple Rhyme Time shows me how I could never compete with these contestants.  My brain was going too slow to figure them out in a few seconds.

Surprised but not surprised she bet so little when she was tied. I remember her being a cautious better, but in that situation you kinda have to go for it (but then you also have to consider if you both get it wrong the other guy might win).

Yes, she was in a tough place.  I often criticize players for not betting bigger, but I sympathize with Margaret here.  The TOC FJs are (in recent tournaments) harder than the FJs in regular play, so there is a good chance you might get it wrong.  I'm not sure I would have done anything different from what she did.  On the other hand, she might regret that decision for a long time.

  13. I was looking at jeopardy.com and the TOC is different from how it has been in the past, apparently to make sure the contestants try to win each game.

In the past the first week consisted of five games and the winners of those games plus the four highest scoring non-winners would move to the next round.  So many times we would see people with high scores at the end of DJ stand pat with a low wager in FJ.  They weren't trying to win; they just didn't want to lose a lot of money in FJ and fall down the leading money-winner list.

This year, only the winners of the first round of games will move on.  No more coasting in with a high second-place score.

Also, in the past the finals were two-game affairs in which the eventual winner was whoever got the highest combined total in both games.  Contestants didn't have to win each game, and theoretically you could win neither game and still be crowned champion.  Clever Jeopardy players knew they didn't have to win one game to win it all.

This time, the finals is decided by the first player to win three games.  No more coming in second in one game and coasting in on your combined score.  The final could go as long as seven games.

In the past, tournaments were 10 games total.  This year, the TOC will be between 12 and 16 games.

  14. The last 7 TOC winners have been between the ages of 30 and 35.  (And Ken Jennings was 30 during most of his legendary 74-game winning streak.)

I believe Matt Amodio is now 31, so he is my prediction to win.  Jonathan Fisher and Eric Ahasic are also in their early 30s, and maybe some others, but all things considered, I will predict Matt.

  15. Wow, Rowan is SUPER fast.

I know many on this forum didn't like her smiling demeanor the first time she was on, but didn't bother me (I rarely dislike contestants), and the Price Is Right has taught us that game show producers love enthusiastic players.

I'm hoping Rowan makes it to the TOC and that she gets in a game with Matt Amodio.  That's a rematch I would like to see.
