  1. Yes, this is absolutely true. The US federations take this stuff very seriously. Sha'Carri was banned by USADA, and US Track and Field had the option to send her to Tokyo but chose not to. She could have run in the 4x100 relay IIRC. Adam Rippon tweeted that all the American athletes have to go through USADA seminars about drug testing and banned substances, and they warn the athletes to be careful, even with OTC things like cold medications and topical ointments or creams for pain. Tara said that even as a 15-year-old, she knew the list of banned substances and she was very careful about any medication she took that might get her in any hot water. Do you think the Russian athletes have to go through a similar seminar with RUSADA? Hah! Russia's probably like, "Here's the list of banned substances, WINK WINK!"
  2. You know, I've actually been wondering this. Yuna didn't win in Sochi; then when you see scores like that for the South Korean and Japanese skaters compared to what the Russian girls get, it seems suspicious.
  3. They should mail the medal to Kamila's grandpa.
  4. The axel is the hardest jump because you take off going forward, plus it’s an edge jump not a toe pick jump. You actually do a full extra half-revolution because you start going forward and end going backward. And you have to land on an outside edge which is harder than landing on an inside edge. If you ever hear about “flutzes,” that’s a lutz jump that a skater is fudging on her inside edge rather than the outside edge because it’s easier to land. Sasha Cohen was notorious for her flutzes. This skating lesson has been brought to you by my childhood ice skating lessons. I never got beyond learning a waltz jump and a camel spin.
  5. I agree but I don’t think the parents of the gymnasts knew the deal with Nassar. He was in demand because he claimed to be able to fix the hip and pelvic issues that a lot of gymnasts go through. He was even interviewed by police and showed them diagrams of what he did and explained why he was doing it, and the police bought it. He was a very good liar and his target was teenage girls — unfortunately not a population we take seriously enough.
  6. Or their crazy doctor had the skaters on a drug cocktail that helped them train longer.
  7. How do you "laugh" and "cry" at a post at the same time?
  8. Holy shit is there anything she wasn't on?
  9. But that's why they raised the age limit, right? Now the gymnasts have to turn 16 in an Olympic year. Figure skating is similar, the girls have to be 15 the year before the Olympics. I don't know if they'll raise the age limit higher than that.
  10. Other than 2008 when the Chinese clearly cheated and had younger gymnasts on their squad, I don't think there have been any female gymnasts under the age of 15 competing (though some gymnasts, I think notably the Russians, were able to take advantage of the fact that the last Summer Games were delayed by a year). I think Kyla Ross turned 16 shortly after London. You can clearly see how gymnastics has changed since they raised the age limit and changed the scoring system. The gymnasts are now more powerful than balletic; they have muscles in their hips and shoulders. They're still short but they look like they pack a punch.
  11. Does anyone else think maybe Johnny feels personally betrayed by the Russians and blindsided by the doping? He's propped them up for years, always gushes over their skaters and says nice things about them despite the sketchy and abusive training methods. His comments today made it seem like he was holding back and trying not to say something awful. He and Tara hardly said anything during Kamila's skate, and at the end Johnny was all, "Well, that was a short program by Kamila Valieva and that's all I'll say about that."
  12. I mean no one has learned anything about making the sport more legit or credible. The people in charge don't care and the judges don't care. They'll manipulate the results to get the one they want and fuck everything else. That was an issue with gymnastics too, but they changed the scoring system to almost zero out the artistic elements. Jade Carey won a gold medal on floor exercise at the last Olympics with the least artistic routine I've ever seen, but it was completely legitimate because her execution and her technical elements were better than anyone else's. And yeah, that's actual execution, with no underrotations or anything silly like that. (There's still the Simone issue, but she's such an outlier and I feel like nobody even knows what to do with her since her skills are far beyond anyone else's; still, her beam routine "only" won silver in Tokyo and it was a fair score. No judging controversy.) In the end I think it's mostly the people who run the sport that are the issue here. They really wanted to clean up gymnastics scoring. Figure skating, not so much.
  13. Nobody learned anything after Salt Lake,. For fuck's sake. Even gymnastics has mostly cleaned up its scoring issues. As if the doping scandal wasn't bad enough.
  14. Tara and Johnny are pissed off. And she's in first and that is total bullshit given that Higuchi landed her 3A cleanly and Kamila did not.
  15. This sport needs some serious reform. (Yes, I’m watching because I’m weak but I also want to see what Tara and Johnny have to say about the Cheaters.) Wakaba Higuchi landed a triple axel and was massively underscored, I assume to save space for the Cheaters in the final group. Fuck the judges and fuck the people who run this sport.
  16. Wait wait wait. What am I seeing, that Kamila was on a SECOND drug? Called Hypoxen? What the hell is this?!?!
  17. To sum up all of the past 30 or so pages in a few words. Eteri: Kamila, say hello to your grandfather Kamila: But my grandfather is dead Eteri, teeth clenched: KAMILA, SAY HELLO TO YOUR BELOVED GRANDFATHER
  18. I was so excited to watch the ladies program with my daughter. She has recently started figure skating and loves it and was excited to watch the women. Now? My enthusiasm for skating has completely gone out the window. Should I explain to her or should I just leave it, keep quiet and watch with her?
  19. Kamila has spoken, a video was posted to Instagram and this is the apparent translation of what she said. Funny thing, she's not representing "our country," she's representing the Russian Olympic Committee because "our country" engaged in state-sponsored doping and it looks like they still are engaging in state-sponsored doping. And I'm so sorry that this is a difficult time for you. The skaters who competed against you without cheating must feel great! I can't figure out if she's a moron or if she's just all Russia brainwashed. I want to feel bad for her, I really do, but it's getting harder.
  20. I really really want to have sympathy for Kamila but right now it's hard after reading statements from Tara, Kimmie Meissner and others who competed as young athletes. She either took a banned substance knowingly or now she knows her coach gave it to her. Kamila is 15, not 5, and knows the deal about drug tests. And yeah, the backlash will be more on her than it will be on Eteri because she's the one who took the substance, she's the one performing, she's the one getting the medal. That's just the harsh reality of it, and she's going to have to deal with it. Sorry, you don't get a medal ceremony because you cheated.
  21. It will be super ridiculous as well if any of the Russian skaters are there for the gala. Like, way to go, IOC. If only they had punished Russia properly and banned them from the Olympics for a cycle or two instead of a ridiculous slap on the wrist punishment like just not having their flag there. Maybe Russia would have learned its lesson then. Sha'Carri Richardson responds. Realize that Richardson was done IMMENSE harm by not being able to participate in the Olympics. She was set to be the next FloJo.
  22. No team medal ceremony is bullshit because it deprives the US and Japanese teams of their moment. As there should be. In fact there’s a cloud over the whole fucking sport and all of the international organizations that govern sports.
  23. The queen on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CZ9CsSFJPpX/?utm_medium=copy_link
  24. It’s a complete joke. As if figure skating didn’t have credibility issues as it is. Now you have a skater who TESTED POSITIVE FOR A BANNED SUBSTANCE AND SHE STILL GETS TO SKATE. And the worry is that it will cause her “irreparable harm” if she can’t skate? What about the harm to the other skaters? Everyone should just dope up then. What’s the point in playing fair?
