  1. I didn't love it but it was entertaining. Pretty clear where it was going from the very beginning though. I liked it way better than Promising Young Woman. I was furious at the end of that movie and I still don't know what message Fennel was trying to send with that one. At least this one didn't leave me in angry tears. I thought Alison Oliver was fantastic. That scene between Venetia and Oliver in the bathtub was the best of the movie, imo.
  2. I loathed George for how he treated Callie.
  3. I still like the music in Rent but I do feel like I've definitely outgrown the story. As a teen when I first saw it, I was totally on their side. Now, my eyes roll out of my head when Mark whines about how he 'sold out' by getting an actual job, and then quitting said job because he has to finish his crappy 'documentary.' Mark sucks, is what I'm saying. He, more than the rest of them, has no reason why he can't work. None at all. He just chooses not to. Tick Tick Boom I like better, because Jonathan did have a job. Yeah, he was a jerk in the office scene but Michael sufficiently called him out on that, IMO. Yes, he was more focused on his art than anything else but at least he had some sort of a job.
  4. Yep, I've read several places about several movies that no one was sure Murray was going to show up. What an ass. I never liked Venkman either. I loved the other ghostbusters and then his character stuck out like a sore thumb for me but in a bad way.
  5. 'Somewhere' is sung by an offscreen singer in the original play. It wasn't a Tony/Maria duet there. And Tony and Maria already have two duets in the show. I don't think they don't need a third. I liked that they recontextualized it for Valentina. I like Beymer fine for the romantic stuff. He sold it well. He just didn't sell the reformed gang member (with a rep bigger than the whole west side). Ansel, OTOH, sold the gang member part, but not so much the romance stuff. I think he's the flattest when he's in scenes with Maria. His best work, IMO, was the rumble. Perhaps, someday there will be a Tony who is able to marry both sides on the screen. I'm sure there's been one on the stage.
  6. You're right, it is elevated from the original. And I do love that she and the other Jet girls tried to stop the assault in that scene. But, it's still a small part and I'm unclear about why she got to go to the Oscars for it. I'm not mad she was there or anything. I've got no issues with her or the character. It just seems odd to me.
  7. That is weird. I guess technically she's a bigger name than Rachel but I think she had all of one line in WSS. Definitely weird that Paloma Garcia-Lee was there. I've never heard of her before and Graziella is a very small part. Her biggest contribution to the narrative is to be Riff's dance partner at the gym. I'm not gonna be hard on Rachel. She's very young and new to this whole thing. I don't blame her for wanting to go to the Oscars. Maybe she wasn't aware why she wasn't invited and really felt hurt over it. I also think it was very classy of Chris Rock to apologize to Wanda. I believe both she and Amy feel sick over it. I was watching on TV and I know none of these people and I felt uncomfortable all night.
  8. I do think it's cool that a woman has won Best Director two years in a row, even if Jane Campion said some stupid stuff.
  9. I was fine with Will Smith winning until THAT just happened. This is gonna be an awkward acceptance speech in an hour.
  10. I really liked Power of the Dog, myself. It did start out slow, but I've slogged through slower.
  11. Wow, is this seriously his first Oscar win ever? That surprises me.
  12. Ah. I was just thinking that it wasn't very impressive and what's the big deal. This makes more sense.
  13. Fun fact, this is my first time actually hearing this song, instead of just hearing about it.
  14. I hope it's doing well on streaming. It's definitely my favorite movie of 2021. I also want to believe that Maria will be all right. If nothing else, Valentina would help her. She loved Tony too. And I don't think the Jets would ever mess with her after everything. Hopefully, the two gangs just leave each other be now. Three people died because of their pointless feud. Enough's enough. Plus, they're all about to be driven from the neighborhood anyway, so what does it matter? Maria talked about wanting to go to school and I believe Valentina would help her with whatever she needs to make a life for herself wherever she wants the life to be. I agree that Natalie Wood's Maria seemed like a stronger person than Rachel Zegler's but the latter still had ambitions. And she stood up to Bernardo more than the former.
  15. I love their friendship so much in all versions I've seen but I can't help but feel like their relationship is over. I understand why Anita lied about Maria. She was just nearly gang r*ped and that's an absolutely traumatizing thing to go through. But, Tony died as a result of that. And that devastates Maria. I can't see them ever forgiving each other, which is just another layer of heartbreak. And in this version, Maria's parents didn't seem to be in America. It was just Bernardo, Anita, and Maria living together as a little family unit. Let's say Anita goes back to Puerto Rico, what happens to Maria? Her and Mike Faist. He blew me away with how much depth he gave Riff. They were both snubbed. And yes, it's unacceptable that Rachel wasn't invited to the Oscars. She's the lead for goodness sake! So disrespectful. Right? I would have demanded to know what happened that lead to him killing my brother. I mean, they were both very niave to think that Tony had any hope of stopping the rumble. Especially, as it was about to start. He could have gone to her and said, 'I tried to talk to my guys but they won't listen to me anymore.' But, there was no way he was gonna talk both sides down seconds before the fighting was about to start.
  16. Yes. I have so much respect for Spielberg on this film because it's clear he really cared. He wasn't going through the motions or doing it because of name recognition or to mark off 'musical' on his list of films to make. He was really passionate about this story and it comes through the whole thing. Absolutely. The whole story is a tragedy for everyone. (Riff and the Jets playing with the gun just shows what stupid little boys they were and what a waste the whole thing was) but my heart really breaks for Anita. To see this strong and vibrant woman beaten down like she was at the end was horrible. But, I too, loved the addition of having Graziella and the other Jet girls try to stop the attack on her. Even though Graziella was pissed too, she instantly didn't want that to happen. That was a great touch. I like I Feel Pretty. If I were to cut any song, it would be One Hand One Heart. I've never liked that song. It's sooooo dull. But, I will say, I thought Ansel and Rachel performed it well and I did like it more here than I did in the '61 movie. (I thought Ansel was fine too. I'm not speaking about him as a person because yikes but I did think his performance was better than Richard Beymer's). The only changes that bugged me were Maria forgiving Tony. In the '61 version, Tony at least explains that Bernardo killed Riff and that Riff was family to him. You can see that information sink in with her and she understands then. In this one, that explanation isn't there so she just forgives him because??? And I hate that they cut down Maria's speech at the end. Maybe they thought it was too on the nose but I love that speech. 'You all killed him and my brother and Riff. Not with bullets and guns but with hate. Well, I can kill too because now I have hate!' Maybe it was just now Natalie Wood performed it but it gets me every time. Wish they would have let Rachel say the whole thing. Oh my gosh, yes! He's not getting enough attention. I love the changes they made to Chino. It just added yet another layer of tragedy to the story. When he went for it and started dancing at the gym? How can you not love him in that moment?
  17. Definitely. I know Ansel is singled out as the worst part of the movie and that may be true. But, I do buy that his Tony is an angry violent guy who is trying to be better. Richard Beymer was just so happy and love struck and naive and I don't believe he was ever in a gang.
  18. I had the opposite impression. In the original, they were close and very buddy buddy. But, in this one they actually felt like brothers and that's why there was such tension because they loved each other and there were hurt feelings on both sides. Riff feels abandoned by Tony. And Tony feels like Riff doesn't care to listen or understand that he wants a different kind of life. I loved that they changed Cool to make it a duet/fight between Riff and Tony. It gives the song a weight that it didn't have in the stage play or the '61 movie. All that to say, I thought the Riff and Tony relationship was a lot deeper in this version.
  19. That's me. I love my dad. I just think my maiden name is ugly, lol. I've never liked it. I think my husband's last name is nice so I was more than happy to take it and give it to our kid. I don't think of it as belonging to my husband. I chose to take his last name. He didn't demand it.
